About Crispin Hull
Greg is an Australian who grew up in the very historic mining town of Beechworth in North East Victoria. The town now is a very popular tourist destination. Greg's early career was as an officer in the Australian Army, which included overseas appointments in Hong Kong, London and Hawaii. He then joined the Australian Trade Commission, with six consecutive overeas assignments to promote Australian exports and investments, in Mexico/Central America/Caribbean; Papua New Guinea/SW Pacific, (Northern) Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. He then started his own consulting company in southern Africa before semi-retirement in Thailand. Greg purchased Solana 5 in Port Douglas at the start of 2013. At a wine tasting in Bangkok in late 2014 Greg met Utage Shinozaki, a Japanese professional photographer and film co-ordinator who had lived and worked in Thailand for over 10 years. They have been very happily together ever since, living between Australia and Thailand. Uta grew up in Tokyo, graduating in photography from Japan’s foremost arts university. From 2004 to 2016 Uta lived full time in Thailand, attracted by its climate, vibrancy, food and people. From 2009-2013 Uta managed a fairtrade coffee and natural product shop with her ex-husband (and continuing good friend) on Koh Chang, an eco-tourist destination island in south east Thailand. Uta now co-manages a company called ‘Smile Film’, based in Bangkok, which co-ordinates the professional requirements of production houses from Japan with their filming needs on location in Thailand. Uta speaks and writes Thai exceptionally well. She has no children and a truly remarkable mother, Mina. Greg and Uta's mostly shared interests include cycling, swimming, gym, tennis, growing orchids and vegetables (to be advanced), writing, travelling, cooking and of course, wine.

Why Crispin Hull chose Port Douglas
Solana 5 is some 110 metres (like a two minute walk or less) away from one of Tropical North Queensland's, if not Australia's, most iconic beaches: Four Mile at Port Douglas. Port Douglas is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the magnificent Daintree Rainforest National Park. Both are World Heritage and on many people's 'global bucket list'. Port Douglas is a small, friendly and vibrant village, which effectively portrays two characters: the wet, hot summer (December-March) season and the clear, dry winter (June-September) with short shoulder seasons between trhat can experience changeable but tolerable weather. It is the (Australian) winter season, with usually near perfect climate conditions that attracts many tourists, especially from southern Australia but increasingly from overseas. However, fewer tourists, little or no wind on the Reef, a truly 'rainy' rain forest, and lower prices for everything are a very attractive reason to come to Port Douglas in the 'off' summer hot season, especially if escaping a cold and dark Northern Hemisphere winter. And it does not rain all day every day - more like heavy tropical downpours which can cool and refresh. Of course air conditioning, an umbrella, being free to dress for the climate, and swimming pools all help a guest really enjoy the 'wet' season. Greg purchased Solana as his place of residence on retiring from the Australian Trade Commisison towards the end of 2012. His brother and sister-in-law live permanantley in Port Douglas and help manage the property. Greg was attracted to the property due to being in the picturesque and friendly village of Port Douglas; its proximity to Four Mile Beach (about 120 metres!) and shops; its solid brick cyclone-proof construction; its liveability; manageability and value.
What makes this Villa unique
The unit is located in a quiet cut-de-sac surounded by other low density complexes. The beach, park, kids playground and shops are literally a stones throw away. The cycle to or from town takes around 10-15 minutes, either in a well designated bike lane on the side of the main road, or the less hurried winding and separated bike path. The unit is exceptionally well appointed, as it is a home not just a rental equipped for visitors. Rain or shine, an occupant can be comfortable inside. There is sufficient sapce and alternatives for guests to spread out. A simple BBQ, hot or cold quick dishes, or a gourmet candlelight dinner are all possible with the dining and catering equipment supplied. Relax on Australian leather couches withTV. Enjoy browsing on 5G WIFI throughout. Mobile phone coverage is variable inside the unit, with the telcos promising to upgrade Port Douglas, but a good signal is always found on the patio or balconies. Kids love the place! Very well appointed
We enjoyed our time at this property. It is close enough to Port Douglas yet very quiet at night. Owner was very accommodating. Would have loved to have had more time at the house, but we were off exploring every day. The house is very lovely. Hand soap and hand towels in the kitchen would have made our stay absolutely perfection. Would definitely stay again.
Dear Tinisha, Thanks so much for your positive review. So glad you had a nice holiday at our place. We get there every six months ourselves to do deep clean and maintenance. There is hand soap in kitchen as placed by the cleaner, although we leave special hand soap and towels ourselves. We have not been there since January and I guess they ran out - apologies.

A Great Place in Paradise!
A wonderful and spacious condo in an upscale, quiet neighborhood with all the amenities of a well-stocked home. Every thing you need in the kitchen, espresso machine, beach supplies, great patio and pool for lounging around. A two-minute walk to the beach and five-minute trip into town. We definitely recommend this VRBO for an ideal get-away and would stay there again.

Awesome family holiday
We had a fabulous stay at Solana over the Christmas period. A lovely, clean and well set up home. The kitchen and equipment provided was perfect for us to prepare Christmas meals. It truly was a home away from home. Can't thank the owners enough for everything they did to assist our stay with 2 toddlers - baby gate, port a cot, booster seat, stroller, pool toys and accommodating our arrival around nap times. Would highly recommend this property. We look forward to visiting again!

Solana on the Beach villa offers a relaxing and comfortable holiday base, perfectly located to discover Port Douglas and attractions beyond. Port Douglas is one of Australia's prettiest and iconic tourist destinations, founded in 1877 around a small river outlet to service initially gold, then the timber and sugar industries. The village offers great shopping, especially resort clothing and accessories, and a diverse range of restaurants, cafes and hotels/bars. There is a fantastic Sunday market. Unquestionably, it is the premier base to explore two of Australia's, and indeed the World's, most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Firtly, the Great Barrier Reef. It is the largest living structure on the planet. Stretching 2300km, the reef covers some 344,400 square km in area, with over 3000 individual coral reef clusters, 600 continental islands, 300 coral cays and about 150 inshore mangrove islands. Despite recent bleaching, there are more than 600 types of soft and hard corals, 3000 plus varieties of molluscs, 625 types of fish, 133 varieties of sharks and rays, and more than 30 species of whales and dolphins. Secondly, the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation National Parks. They form part of the greater Wet Tropics of Queensland, a wider region of spectacular scenery and rugged topography. Over 30 per cent of Australia's marsupial species, 58 per cent of bat species, 29 per cent of frog species, 20 per cent of reptile species, 58 per cent of the butterfly species, 40 per cent of bird species and 85 species of vertebrate animals reside in the Wet Tropics. Aboriginal occupation of the area probably dates back to the earliest human occupation of Australia some 50,000 years ago.
