Balmain was one of the earliest Sydney suburbs to be settled by Europeans, becoming an industrial hub and a major Sydney port, with shipbuilding, engineering, and coal mining taking off in the late 1800s. A combination of its working class roots, an influx of immigrants in the 1950s and gentrification of the 1960s -- “Once a tough, working-class neighborhood, Balmain now rivals Paddington [and Surrey Hill] in Victorian-era desirability – with the added advantage of being surrounded by water and city-bound ferries.” (Lonely Plant 2018). Some of Australia's best-known writers, actors, film directors, musicians, and artists call Balmain home.
Darling St traverses the spine of Balmain’s peninsula, and it is packed with boutique shops, cafes, restaurants, and pubs. These have added charms to Balmain with a village-like feel, especially on the weekends. Balmain’s frangipani-scented streets contain dozens of historically significant buildings, it makes a wonderful walk strolling through the neighborhood.

About Jen Hsieh
I'm a poster child for globalization. I lived in Taiwan, US, Canada, and now I call Australia home. I have developed a serious case of wanderlust, the symptoms included insatiable desire to see and experience new places, and meet the locals. So far it has taken me to Spain, Syria, Russia, Singapore, Portugal, Mexico, France, Morocco, Argentina, Italy, Oman, Germany, Turkey, Brazil, Austria, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, UK, Jordan, Peru, Switzerland, New Zealand, Thailand, etc., etc.. Next on my must-visit list: Madagascar, Qatar, South Africa, Chile, and Iran. Being a seasoned traveller, I truly understand what it takes to have a great trip and an unforgettable experience. I believe people are big part of the journey. And nothing beats meeting a local, seeing a place from their eyes, and feeling the passion they have for their city. I look forward to hosting you and sharing with you the city I have been calling home. Welcome to Sydney.
Why Jen Hsieh chose Birchgrove
This apartment was our home -- such that we have painstakingly renovated every square inch of the property for living, and not just for show. This is a place with warmth (and style!), and it devoid the sterile, clinical-ness of commercial properties. Come, live like a local, let this be your home during your travels.
