About Janina L
We love Hobart and although we have travelled a lot we adore coming home. There is so much to do and one doesn't have to travel far before coming across something or somewhere interesting. We came down from Melbourne in 1980 to enjoy our little holiday house in the Derwent Valley for many years and have lived in Hobart permanently since retiring. My photo shows me celebrating a special birthday at MONA's tapas restaurant.
Why Janina L chose Sandy Bay
We fell in love with our house and its location the instant we saw it. The main house was built in the 1960's and has two special features - the sunken livingroom downstairs and the circular glass room upstairs. The mountain and river views from around the garden are inspiring. We can walk to beautiful spots along the river, the village shops and cafes on the beach. To help save the planet we keep one car now and we sometimes use the buses which pass by our street.
What makes this Apartment unique
The adjoining 50sqm apartment was built in the 1980's by the previous owners to be used primarily for visiting friends and family. When not in use they welcomed BnB guests. We thought it had a very cosy feel with all the wood panelling and loved the picture window views. After adding a kitchenette and laundry to the unit we have carried on the tradition. We love that our guests say they enjoy the property's tranquility and the garden. This year I added a peach tree to the apples and apricot trees. And we try to keep some herbs and lettuces growing for guests to pick fresh.

Great Views and Location
Janina and Gary were splendid and generous hosts. Nothing was too much trouble to ensure we had a great stay. The unit was comfortable and well located for our needs to explore the area and region. A great bonus was the vista from the property enabling us to get a box seat to see the tall ships armada sail up the Derwent.
Thank you for your kind comments. We were thrilled that you were here to experience one of the Wooden Boat Festival highlights.
Comfortable Self-Catering Property
Comfortable property for 2 people with adequate facilities for washing/drying clothes and basic (microwave and induction hob) self-catering facilities. The host provides consumables for initial arrival/initial breakfast. The sea view is not available from the property although you can sit in the garden and admire it. Our last night there was quite warm and we needed to open the bedroom window, this is not straight-forward due to the arrangement of the blind cords. It would be quite easy to break the blind cords when releasing them to open the sliding windows. This needs attention by the host who is a very nice attentive lady who knows the area.
I am sorry the cord was a problem when opening one of the windows but I have found a solution and thank you for pointing it out. Hope you will come and stay again.
Hospitality and relaxation made a great start to o
An intimate, cosy apartment, thoughtfully presented and overlooking a gorgeous, perfectly manicured, very pretty garden - including lettuces and herbs, which we were encouraged to pick for our salad. We felt cocooned and rested and very welcomed by our hosts Janina and Gary. It's so close to the CBD, with everything close by, but just enough distance to be away from too much busyness! We would love to stay there again - but longer next time!
Much appreciate your comments and delighted that we might see you return to Sonningview.
A pleasant location and friendly hosts
We enjoyed our stay here, although we had a couple of problems. As my phone would not download the app, I had only email to find the address, so it was a bit of a challenge, but eventually we got there. We were disappointed that the view was only from the host's home. Also, we were unable to get the induction plates working, and would suggest that the owner write some simplified instructions for guests. Also the door was a bit tricky to unlock and maybe instructions to make sure the bottom lock is not knocked so the knob won't turn. Janina and her husband were away, so a friend was looking after the place, so this may not be a problem usually, and we were able to avoid the problem after the first time when Michele had to let us in through the house. The shower also seems to be affected by water usage in the owner's property. This made my husband's shower erratic and almost dangerous on one occasion, as the hot water temperature was very high, so when the cold reduced he could have been scalded if he hadn't reacted quickly. Apart from those issues we were very comfortable here, especially once my husband figured out how to work the heater in the living room - something else that perhaps needs simplified instructions available to guests.
Thank you for your comments Moira. It is Murphy's Law that my absence led to issues for you. Had I been here they could easily have been addressed. Delighted that you did enjoy your stay and were comfortable.
Very clean and comfortable. A home away from home.
Janina was a wonderful host, welcoming us with a warm and cozy bnb. It had everything we needed to feel at home including an electric blanket for those cold Hobart nights.
Loved the view of Mt Wellington from our bedroom. Magnificent.
Great spot. Easy to drive to Bruny Island or Hobart CBD
Definitely enhanced our wonderful stay in Tasmania.
Thank you Jacqueline. Home away from home is very much what we hope our guests will enjoy whilst staying here at Sonningview.
A comfortable stay
A stylishly furnished garden apartment/cottage with all mod cons just big enough for 2 adults. Friendly hosts, comfortable bed and pretty and quiet location. Wallabies on the road at night but this is a convenient location 10 minutes from Battery Pt 15 mins from the city and 30 minutes from the airport. Good coffee and food options close by and the name and location of these are available with all the other sightseeing and tour info kept in the cottage. Good wifi as well. We’ll be back!
It is still amazes us that we have these adorable animals coming down from Mt Nelson to graze our neighbourhood at night yet close by is the city centre, Salamanca markets and excellent local cafes and restaurants in Sandy Bay. Great meeting you and thanks.
A handy base from which to tour southern Tasmania and Hobart attractions. Little known is the Shot Tower at Taroona. Mt Wellington has a famous view and less known is Mt Nelson just a few km up the road and has incredible views to the south pole with a very good restaurant.
