About Rod and Leah Macdonald
Rod and Leah We are a (young) middle age married couple with adult children and our own grandchildren. We live in Burrum Heads - just a bit north of Hervey Bay. Rod has been a paramedic for 30 years and we are also foster carers. When Rod was working as a paramedic on K'gari - Fraser Island; we lived there for 2 years 2014/15 and absolutely fell in love with the Island. This house came up for sale in 2016 and we were lucky enough to be able to purchase it. On November 11th it was officially ours - we gave it a quick renovation and a paint inside and put it up for holiday rental. We stay there heaps ourselves, around bookings; and always take our foster kids and grandkids there too. Thats why we set the house up to be family friendly. We are always surrounded by kids and wanted the Happy House to be as kid friendly and easy to live in as possible.
Rod and Leah Macdonald purchased this House in 2016
Why Rod and Leah Macdonald chose Fraser Island
How did the house get her name?? We are foster carers, and when we lived on K'gari for Rod's work 2014/15, we had 2 little twin boys that lived with us too. They loved growing up on the island; and they called where we lived the Happy House; because they were always happiest when we were on the Island. So we named our house the Happy House in honour of them. They live back with their family now, but we have been able to bring them all back to The Happy House for holidays and they still love it just as much. We set the house up to cater only for families and it is pretty much child safe so everyone can have relaxing holiday - even mum. The house has beautiful family energy. We only rent it out to families. We don't rent it out to groups of fishermen or groups of adults. We still do foster care and still bring whichever kids we have at the time over with us to the Happy House when we need to mow or just for a quick weekend get away, so they too can enjoy a break away from the world and just relax and enjoy life for a while. In May / June of 2018 we are getting some major renovations done, like adding a 2nd bathroom and extending the front deck. So any bookings after July 2018 will be into the newly renovated Happy House. Woot Woot
What makes this House unique
Comfortable extended family or multi couple holiday home. Caters for up to 3 couples and 10+ kids and we don't charge extra per night for extra people either. Whether it be extended families like grandparents, adult kids and grandkids or maybe a group of several couples of friends with kids or even people like us who may have lots of kids for various reasons. You pay the same price whether you have 2 adults and 2 kids; or if you have 8 adults and 10 kids. We DO NOT CHARGE EXTRA FEES for extra adults or extra kids. You pay to book the house, not book per person We aim to make this an affordable and comfortable family holiday home. Also it is not prim and proper and posh with little glass ornaments or lamps or bowls of shells etc which all look nice but kids gravitate too and break (lol) It is a lovely, clean, beach chic styled house that you can comfortably holiday in without wondering what the kids are going to destroy, cause it is essentially child safe. Great for families with children from babies to teenagers. All we ask is you clean up and wipe the foot prints and finger prints off the walls when you go. Our kids do the same. No need to stress. Enjoy your holiday :-)
No refunds for cancellations made after payment is made
Happy house is awesome
It's great!!, friendly owners easy to deal with great location, safe area, good pub with good meals close by with air and fuel the property is easy to use for savvy self service people with half an idea of off grid living.
the only recommendation i could make is take a tarp to block the south easterly in winter on the deck (it rained and blew 25knts first 3 days) unless or until the owners put up some roller shutters but it certainly isn't a deal breaker, great little place and easily serviced our 15 person group, the kids had ample room to play ball out front under supervision from the huge deck and even met a few other kids staying next door
Thankyou Happy house we had an absolute blast!!!! Happy Valley and Happy House get my vote.
Great property, excellent value, great location. Really good for our three families. Loved it
excellent property for a few familys
Great for a family holiday!
Happy House was perfect for our first trip to Fraser with the extended family! The communication with Leah and Rod couldn't have been easier. Happy Valley is the perfect location and the kids had a ball running around. Woodfired pizza is a must if you stay at the happy house!!
It’s charm and layout to accommodate a family holiday, with young children was perfect.
It was clean and had a wonderful character about it. We had a wonderful time st the happy house and will certainly remember it for future family holidays to the island. The owners are wonderful people and really cared about our holiday and making sure the house was as we would have expected it to be. Thank you Leah and Rod for sharing your home with us.
Thank you for your lovely review. You are most welcome to return anytime. Hope to see you again in the future
Happy stay at the happy house
We had a great stay at Happy House, great location and very well equipped with basics and furniture. The house was spacious for a group with the large deck at the front being a great space to enjoy. One negative for us was a window frame, with no windows or covering between the two double bunk rooms. With a set of parents in each of these rooms a "hole in the wall" wasn't ideal.
Other than that the house was the perfect spot for a big family holiday!
