AC Broken for 24 Hours
My family and I flew in from out of state for a UVA reunion. This was a highly anticipated and expensive trip for us. Given a number of family members were joining, including a small child, we chose to rent a house instead of multiple hotel rooms. Also, the convenient proximity to Belmont and the Downtown Mall were attractive. We arrived midday on Thursday (and were accommodated by an early check in) and noticed it was quite warm in our house (78 degrees and the AC was on 68). One of our family members called the management group (Stay Charlottesville) who told us the earliest they could have an AC technician was the next day. The management group brought box fans (certainly better than nothing). A very warm, uncomfortable night in the house made which was even less comfortable for the 2 year old baby. I called Friday morning to determine when the technician would arrive and was told 12-2pm. We rescheduled our day and activities to be home to meet the technician (we were told this was necessary). At 2pm we called to learn that the technician was actually due between 12 and 7pm, the previous customer service representative was new and incorrect. Terrific. The technician finally arrived. He was dutiful and respectful and by 7.30pm had the AC running. All in all, a very unfortunate way to spend what was intended to be a very important family vacation. Also, we had a massive ant problem in the kitchen. The management group did remedy this. Spartan kitchen supplies (e.g., no soap, no kitchen hand towels, no dishwasher detergent) made kitchen functionality an issue (they did have pots, pans, cups, silverware, etc.). It felt like a forlorn, forgotten property. If someone from the management group would have come by to check on the house prior to our arrival, certainly all of these issues would have been remedied (maybe not the kitchen supplies but in prior home rentals I have found this to be basic). Instead, it was a very disappointing trip. I was told that we would receive a discount or some financial compensation for the nightmare but.... crickets. Too many other good options, stay away from this one (and the Stay Charlottesville management company).
I was truly disheartened to hear about the many issues you experienced during your family's vacation with us here in Charlottesville. I am not sure why the AC unit failed but unfortunately we fall into a waiting list for service on occasion due to high demand which made your wait time longer than normal. I'm also not sure why you were asked to stay for the technician, as usually we assist with gaining them access and being with them though the repair. I would also like to apologize for the lack of essential kitchen supplies as we have corrected this situation for future stays. Again, we are sorry for you disappointment and hope that we can somehow regain your trust and confidence in making sure your next experience with us is successful.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us so that we can train our staff to provide better service.
Spacious and Great Location
We were impressed by how spacious this home was: the kitchen is superb, full dining area, and nice living room with large TV. The bedrooms were equally large, and the full bath was very pretty. It's truly a 5 minute walk to the pedestrian downtown with shopping and food. As with any older home, however, there are some challenges: the shower is difficult to use and temperamental, and the paint is peeling in places. Regardless, we'd stay here again!
Thank you so much for the positive review. You're so right - the location is phenomenal! We appreciate your understanding with older homes but we will definitely take a look to see if there is anything we can do. Thanks again for the feedback!
Great C'ville location near the mall
Had a great 4-night stay here this April. House has 3 nice bedrooms all on the second floor. One is a single, one a queen and one is a king. The king is lower (mattress on a platform) which might be a consideration for individuals that might have difficulty getting up from it. Also on the second floor is the full bathroom that has a claw foot tub - again consider the ability of all members of the party to get into and out of the tub. Taking a shower in any claw foot tub can be challenging with the shower curtain and preventing leaks. Just be prepared for a little bit of effort to take a shower.
The kitchen and downstairs are fairly spartan - sufficient seating in the dining room, but seating for 4 only in the LR. Kitchen has adequate cookware for most basic meal preparations and there are several restaurants within a short walk...a longer walk is required to get to the mall.
The house has a nice front porch, air conditioning and heat. It is in a residential neighborhood that is quiet and friendly. Parking is on the street and was never a problem. During some of the evenings when the closest eateries were open, some patrons parked in front of the house mainly because this is the last house on the street. A few times I had to park 3 or 4 houses away but it was never a problem.
Overall the house was very clean and comfortable. Stay C'Ville doe s agood job of providing the linens and towels. Access and vacating was very easy. We will put this on our short list of properties for our visits to C'ville.
Thank you so much for the detailed review. We appreciate everything you have to stay! You're welcome back any time!
Great stay, nice location
House was comfortable, and very accommodable for my Golden Retriever. We enjoyed our stay.
Wonderful - we are glad you (and your pup) enjoyed Graves Street Magnolia, Mark!
Looking for somewhere to stay that feels like home?
You'll love this gorgeous, spacious 1900sf brick Victorian home in the desirable Belmont neighborhood of Charlottesville, one block from the bustling Downtown Pedestrian Mall. Built in 1914, meticulously renovated, and tastefully furnished with uncluttered mid-century modern charm, Graves St Magnolia is your home away from home!
Loaded with fantastic features including high ceilings, heart pine floors, a designer kitchen (gas stove, stainless steel appliances) that flows into a large dining room, a large living room, 1.5 baths (upstairs bath features windows on 2 sides, a giant claw foot tub/shower, blue penny tile, granite counters, custom cabinetry), over sized windows throughout, a rear sun-room, large front porch shaded by a stately magnolia tree, and fenced back yard and patio and grill. It's absolutely phenomenal.
Superb location in the beating heart of Charlottesville. This home's walk score is 97 out of 100 - a 'walker's paradise.'
