About Michele Theunissen
I am an artist who, with my husband, love the natural environment of this property and encourage local flora and fauna to flourish, especially the birds. We have cultivated organic vegetable gardens delighting in healthy eating and love being able to share the produce with guests. Our scraps feed the worm farm and compost bins so that we minimise our waste impact but also for the delight of watching worms turn food into the very best fertiliser for our plants.
Michele Theunissen purchased this House in 2001
Why Michele Theunissen chose Burnside
We bought this property after a long search for a place with healthy native vegetation. We camped on the property under the stars for many years before we could afford to build with an architect sensitive to the relationship of house to environment.
What makes this House unique
We chose the colour of the house after many camping trips in the outback. It's a reference to the rich, wonderful colours of outback country. We wanted to keep a small footprint on the land, not destroy too much vegetation, so built up instead of out. The three tiers provide ample space, indoors and out. I love the grass trees each with a character and attitude. Each time we walk into the house we are lifted by the scent of the panels and by the spaces which look out onto the beautiful bush. The artwork featured in the house has been gathered from artist friends and myself. Books have been loved for many years and we're happy to share our collection. This family home has shared many rich experiences with our children, family and friends.

Beautiful setting, well appointed house. Highly recommend.
The house has everything you need and was the perfect place to relax after exploring the Margaret River during the day. Communication with owner was great. Would definitely return.
It was a pleasure to have you as our guest Julie. So glad you enjoyed garden produce too.
This is a great place to stay. It has all the comforts of home surrounded by beautiful bushland.
We chose this property for our annual friend catch up. Having the different levels and generous space options with shared living space ticked all the boxes. The kitchen is very well equipped with all the usual equipment. Three decks to choose from was fantastic however we really only used one for dining and entertainment. The beds and bathrooms are all well equipped with very good quality linen. The provision of local products was a great touch and we certainly added to the state of the economy as a result of this.
We loved our time at Paprika House. Our only suggestion relates to one of the main beautiful features of the house, the openness created from uninterrupted views from many angles due to the absence of curtains or blinds. While this is a stunning feature the down side was for both of us everyday 4.30am starts when daylight and dawn began did not allow for any sleep ins or restful mornings or afternoon naps. Unobtrusive blinds to give the option would have been terrific. We thoroughly enjoyed everything else but for a restful break away from busy schedules we needed more capacity to sleep.
Lynette, thank you for the detailed response to your stay at Paprika House. I know how much you were looking forward to this break and I wanted it to be perfect for you, so it is with surprise and dismay that I learn you found it difficult to sleep. The issue of window coverings, in the form of blinds or curtains has been considered a few times, and in consultation with the architect. The underlining principle for the design of the house was to have an integration of inside with outside as we believe that the feeling of wellness comes about through the relationship of the house to the surrounding forest. Integral to this was/is a deep awareness of nature with its rhythms of time passing, the magnificent grass trees, statuesque marri, of the night skies, the early morning light coming with the sounds of birds, the weather, the late afternoon slanting light, the magnificent sunsets. So the windows are shaped to accommodate a view of the beauty outside, to let it come in.
I take the advice you gave very seriously as I pride myself on being able to provide guests with a place that is comfortable, elegant, and which induces wellness so that they have a wonderful experience. I will revisit the issue with window coverings.
Beautiful property in a gorgeous location
My wife and I recently visited the property for a weekend down in Margaret River. The house is located in a beautiful bush setting about 10 mins from the town centre, perfect if you're down there for a weekend getaway and are looking to visit a few wineries. The house itself is very interesting, looks like steel frame with concrete floor and plywood cladding, lots of windows and a massive fire in the open living area - absolutely perfect for the area and the task at hand (i.e. wine and chilling out). There aren't any blinds, so be prepared to rise with the sun, but honestly this didn't bother either of us. There are also bikes and an outdoor bath (set about 30m away from the house surrounded by bush - the wife loved it), We loved staying here just the two of us, but there's another room upstairs and a separate studio on the level below the main living area (two stories, but with third split-level story for the studio), so would love to come back here with a few other friends the next time. Michele was also excellent with the communication - our arrival time was messed up with work, but she stayed in touch and even put the outside light on for us before we arrived so we wouldn't be opening the door in darkness. There was also a bottle of wine and cheese waiting for us. Really can't recommend highly enough. Neil & Nikki
Thank you Neil and Nikki for your warm and heartfelt response. I'm so glad that you enjoyed what the house has to offer. Please come back for longer next time! There's so much to explore.
Unique & Stylish Accommodation in Stunning Countryside
I booked Paprika House for a weekend away in September with friends from Scotland. As this was the first visit to Australia for one of my friends, I wanted to book something special to showcase our beautiful South West. Paprika House did not disappoint.
Set in tranquil bushland close to Margaret River and walking distance to the coast, this architecturally designed house has everything you could wish for. The house is well appointed with comfortable beds and pillows, quality bed linen, gorgeous locally made toiletries and a great kitchen which is well kitted out with top of the range crockery, glass ware, pots and pans and everything else you may need to cook a meal. We were also provided with a welcome basket which included a bottle of wine, coffee beans, fresh free range eggs and some very delicious locally made chocolate.
The décor of the house is very stylish and showcases some of Michelle's beautiful artwork. However, it is still a very homely and comfortable place to stay and the big open fire was very welcome when the sun went down and the temperature dropped in the evening. There is a wonderful selection of music CD's, board games and movies to keep you entertained. During the day we enjoyed having our morning coffees and apertifs on the terrace overlooking the tree tops and listening to the birdlife.
So, if you are looking for stylish accommodation, in a beautiful setting close to Margaret River, you will not find anything better than Paprika House. Enjoy.
Thank you Vera for your wonderfully generous response. I'm so pleased that the house didn't disappoint for your special reunion.
We'd love to have you back!
Our favourite Margaret River stay!
Our stay at Paprika House was an absolute delight. It's clean and modern with spectacular views of the surrounding trees and sky. In particular, the bedrooms have wonderful views of the trees and night sky, though be mindful that there are no curtains/blinds, so you'll want to take an eyemask if you're sensitive to light. If you're a light sleeper you may also want to take earplugs as the birds are quite vocal at sunrise (personally I enjoyed listening to this morning chorus).
We like having the option to make our own meals while we're away and found the kitchen to be very well equipped and a pleasure to cook in. The living area was quite cosy and we really enjoyed snuggling up on the couch at night to watch a movie. During the day, I loved sitting on the daybed with a cup of tea and my book, although I didn't get so much reading done as I kept staring out the window! There's a family of King's skink that live under a rock in the backyard and they're quite fascinating to watch, as are all the beautiful birds that visit the property.
The vegetable garden was overflowing with produce and I enjoyed using the fresh tomatoes and basil I harvested from the garden to make bruschetta for lunch.
If the weather is warm, I definitely recommend taking a dip in the outdoor bath. It was very relaxing being able to soak in the tub and enjoy the views, without any other distractions.
The only minor quibble we had were that we found the rugs a bit of a slip/trip hazard (I think they'd benefit from having some non-slip grip added beneath them). Otherwise, we really enjoyed our stay and are hoping to stay again later in the year!
Thanks for your review Danielle- it's great to hear about your enthusiastic enjoyment of the house and its beautiful location. Pictures don't really do it justice- you need to be there to experience it.
Good advice about the rugs- we will look into an underlay of sorts.
Perfect getaway and great location
We loved the Paprika House. The house is well appointed which sets it apart from other places in the area. Vasse Virgin soaps, Sheridan towels and bedsheets, coffees, quality kitchen gear, and other extras. The room downstairs is super sexy - absolutely huge and the wall opens completely up to the garden and a valley view. Tons of space, so two couples can comfortably share the house without bumping into each other. Loved our trip and the owner is accommodating and lovely. Will definitely stay again.
