"Welcoming, beautiful beds and exceptionally clean"
About Penny O‘Donnell
I now live in Newcastle, but spent much of my childhood in the NSW town of Leeton. I went to high school in Newcastle, worked in Sydney for 6 years, worked in London and Peterborough, UK, for 2 years before returning to Newcastle. We then moved to Corlette at Port Stephens for a decade, and now back in Newcastle. The reason to leave Newcastle is to find out how much it has to offer, and to appreciate the lifestyle here. Over the last 10years or so, Newcastle has matured as a city, but the beautiful beaches and the lake have always been the drawcard. Nearby Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley vineyards are terrific places to visit, and easy to get to. We also like to travel and reverse the experience of homestay hospitality.
Penny O‘Donnell purchased this House in 2012
Why Penny O‘Donnell chose Mayfield West
This home is a quaint cottage, with everything needed for a short term stay. The location is 8km from the Newcastle beach and CBD, and also close to the university campus. My daughter and I purposely purchased the home together as a long term investment. My daughter did the renovation, being much more creative than me. I have enjoyed the homestay experience meeting people from many places within Australia, and overseas. I like to keep the property well maintained which has been valued by the guests; I have all the towels and linen dry cleaned after each guest, and have the lawns and gardens mowed regularly; and the majority of guests feel very much at home as soon as they arrive. It's lovely being able to share the space, and I am so lucky to have so many respectful people stay; to date hosting has been a very positive experience. My Dad was a wood turner, so many pieces in the home were made by my Dad.
What makes this House unique
Being able to park your car off the street in either the single garage or the driveway has been welcomed by past guests. Having a fully fenced backyard to contain pets and children, and high ceilings throughout the home. Having very comfortable queen sized beds with lovely linen. The art deco fireplace is well appreciated, as is the air conditioning. Large, spacious bedrooms, clean and modern bathroom. Second toilet. Laundry with washing machine and dryer, plus a Clothes line. Large kitchen, with dishwasher, microwave, oven and grill. Excellent Wifi and smart TV. Security crimsafe doors both back and front.

Would recommend staying at the Mayfield West Property and hope to stay there again in the future.
Thanks for your kind review Joyce. Always such a positive when a guest appreciates your home. Thankyou.
Great house will all necessary amenities!
Close to Newcastle University's Callaghan Campus, which was what we needed for our daughter doing an exchange there - just a few minutes drive! And, just a 15 minute drive to any Newcastle tourist sites.
Had a great stay at this lovely house - thanks Penny!
Thanks so much Carol. I feel privileged hosting to international guests, especially when they are as appreciative as you. Glad you enjoyed your stay.
Home from home
Neat comfortable cottage in quiet location
Great facilities for a 2 week stay
Owner very helpful and friendly no issues whatsoever.
We stayed as a couple would be ideal for 4 or a family with large enclosed garden
Thanks Robert for your kind review. It was a pleasure to have you as a guest. I feel privileged being a host to international travellers and sharing Newcastle’s highlights from a homey base. Thanks again!
We had an amazing time at Penny's place. It's nice, quiet and well equipped. I'll recommend it to anyone. Thanks
Thanks so much for your kind review Sub.
Comfortable, clean and very welcoming cottage
My mate and I stayed one week over Xmas in this lovely cottage with our key goal to fish Stockton Beach.
The week was great, fishing the beach early morning and then returning to the cottage to relax through the day.
The cottage was well presented, very clean, air conditioned with excellent TV (Netflix etc) and wifi service.
We also appreciated that all linen was supplied.
Bedrooms have ample room with very comfortable beds. Because it was a very hot week, with warm nights, my only area of improvement would relate to having fans in those rooms.
Having Woolworths close by was also positive and we also recommend the local bowling club bistro just a short walk down the road.
Overall a very pleasant stay at a very reasonable price.
Thank you Penny.
Thanks for such a lovely review Ken.
Yes, good suggestion about installing fans in the bedrooms. It was a very hot week.
