Merimbula: Between Lake and Ocean

Nestled between a lake of the same name and the ocean, Merimbula is, first and foremost, a holiday town. The Sapphire Coast hotspot is located almost halfway between Melbourne and Sydney.

There are five beaches for swimming and snorkelling, walking trails that lead around the town’s lake, and national parks a short drive away. Families will find plenty of child-friendly attractions in the vicinity, from a theme park to a wildlife sanctuary and aquarium.

A Town of Five Beaches

Travellers to Merimbula have a series of beaches from which to choose. The five main stretches of sand cater to different crowds, from families to snorkelers to those simply looking for some peace and quiet.

To soak up the beachside town atmosphere, head to Merimbula’s Main Beach, steps from cafes and eateries. There is also BBQ equipment and plenty of space on the foreshore for picnics. If you’re travelling with the kids, go to Mitchies Jetty, a quieter, smaller beach in the area with a jetty you can jump off at high tide.

Spencer Park Beach is another favourite for families, with its playground and safe swimming conditions. Alternately, pick up some snorkelling gear and spend the day peering into the underwater world at Bar Beach. If you get hungry, you can purchase snacks from the onsite stand.

Family-Friendly Merimbula Holidays

There are numerous activities for families in Merimbula and in the surrounding area. Right in town, you can visit Merimbula Wharf’s oceanfront aquarium to learn about the species inhabiting the surrounding waters.

Get close to colourful tropical fish and other species, or observe daily feedings. If you are visiting Merimbula in January, children can become members of the Aquarium Kids Club. One highlight of the club is being able to hold various marine creatures.

Thrill seekers can spend some time at Magic Mountain, a theme park with waterslides, rollercoasters and carnival games. From the tallest roller coaster, you will be able to see all the way to the Merimbula and out to sea.

If you have animal lovers in the family, drive to Potoroo Palace, a sanctuary for injured and endangered species, just 10km from town. Learn all about kangaroos, koalas and emus who roam through the enclosure-free park. For an added fee, visitors can also partake in guided tours and animal encounters, the proceeds of which go to caring for the park’s animals and conservation efforts.

Merimbula Walks and Hikes

Stretch your legs as you get the lay of the land at the national parks surrounding Merimbula. Experience dramatic seascapes and pristine beaches at Bournda National Park, then veer further inland and trek under the reserve’s forest canopies, crossing over creeks and lagoons as you go.

Leave the waterfront behind entirely when you visit South East Forest National Park. You’ll be able to walk on trails meandering through gorges and valleys, up to summits and past waterfalls and swamps.

If you don’t wish to travel far from town, you can simply stroll the 3.6 km of the Merimbula Boardwalk, hugging Merimbula Lake. This is an easy, flat walk for people of all fitness levels,

Spending Time in Town

If you’ve had your fix of high energy activities, you can unwind in town. Pick a restaurant on the Esplanade and dine overlooking the waterfront, or visit Wheeler’s Oyster Farm and Seafood Restaurant, one of Merimbula’s landmark attractions. While at the oyster farm, join a tour or simply sample some fresh oysters onsite.

Perhaps you’d like a round of golf? If that’s the case, there are several options in Merimbula. Practice your swing at the Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club and keep an eye out for wild kangaroos as you play. You can also go to Tura Beach Country Club, listed in the top 100 public golf courses in the country, offering prime ocean views from the course.

Getting to Merimbula from major Australian cities is straightforward. Catch a direct flight to Merimbula from Sydney or Melbourne, or drive to the Sapphire Coast community in 3 hours from Canberra.
