Kangaroo Valley: Australia’s Most Scenic ValleyVisitors to Kangaroo Valley may come for the scenic trails, waterfalls and outdoor sports but are likely to return for the cultural events, markets and galleries. The bustling community has the reputation of being Australia’s most beautiful valley, set in New South Wales’ Illawara region, a short drive from Sydney and Canberra. A retreat for artists just as it is a haven for hikers, Kangaroo Valley offers a wide range of holiday homes, including stately rentals nestled in the mountains and modern units a stone’s throw from the town centre.Hiking and Bushwalking in Kangaroo ValleyNext to Kangaroo Valley is Morton National Park, with its numerous walking and hiking trails meandering along creeks, up to mountain lookouts and through lush rainforests. The Valley’s diverse landscape ensures that walkers will find easy, flat trails fit for the whole family, just as they can spend the day hiking up steep hills. As you hike, you’re likely to come across a waterfall or creek. Spend the day exploring the park’s waterways along the Three Views Walk or make the trek to the Griffin Farm ruins on the Griffin Fire Trail. Mountain bikes are also allowed on these trails. Closer to town, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Historic Village Walk, departing from the Kangaroo Valley Showgrounds.Canoeing, Kayaking and GolfingIn addition to hiking and bushwalking, lovers of the great outdoors can go kayaking or canoeing within Morton National Park. You can hire a canoe or kayak and head out solo or as part of a guided tour. The park’s waters are calm and as such, safe for family expeditions. Overnight canoe trips can also be organised with local tour companies. If manicured lawns call to you, spend a day at the Kangaroo Valley Golf & Country Resort. The golf course, considered one of the most beautiful in Australia, provides sweeping views of the surrounding valley. If you’re playing a game in the late afternoon, you’ll be able to watch the sunset.Art and CultureThe town of Kangaroo Valley is home to a number of art galleries, some of which offer short classes to the general public, like Studio Dairy and The Gallery in Kangaroo Valley. Meanwhile, Galeria Aniela Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park showcases Australian and Aboriginal pieces and Jing Jo Cafe puts on six art shows every year, featuring work produced by Kangaroo Valley area artists. The cafe serves modern Australian cuisine at lunch and Thai fare at dinner. If you would like to learn about Kangaroo Valley’s past, head to Pioneer Park Museum, which includes an old school house, saddlery, timber cutter’s workshop and even a 72m-long swing bridge. Pioneer Park Museum is situated next to a small nature reserve with a couple of short trails.Markets and EventsThroughout the year, Kangaroo Valley residents organise a series of festivals and markets. The Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival takes place each October. Locals take to the streets to listen to folk bands, with children and adults getting creative at the arts and crafts stalls and with the poetry contest. February sees through the Kangaroo Valley Agricultural and Horticultural Festival, which is dedicated to all aspects of country living, with plenty of livestock shows including a rodeo, competitions, market stalls and rides for the whole family. Then there are the Kangaroo Valley Village Markets, on the second Sunday of October through to December. Buy arts & crafts, sample food, sip coffee and browse collections by local artisans as bands play in the background. These markets take place at the Showgrounds.Getting ThereKangaroo Valley is set only 2.5 hours from Sydney and Canberra.
