Binalong Bay: As if White Sand Weren’t Enough

Binalong Bay, set along Tasmania’s Bay of Fires, is in the business of beach holidays with a scenic twist. Fine white sand and crystal blue waters already make for postcard material on their own. But Binalong Bay’s iconic boulders, covered in orange reddish lichen, add a unique touch.

Surrounded by natural beauty, travellers will have numerous opportunities to stay fit as they discover one of Australia’s hottest destinations, as named by Lonely Planet. Snorkel, hike, swim or fish - and keep your camera close at hand.

Binalong Bay is, primarily, a holiday town, so rentals abound, from spacious beachside villas steps to rustic chic cottages with sweeping bay views.

Binalong Bay Beaches

The beaches along Binalong Bay boast some of the whitest sand in the world, bordered by crystal clear water. Binalong Bay Beach, the town’s main beach, is lined by tall grass and bushland. It seems to stretch on for miles, so it won’t be difficult to find a secluded spot.

Swimcart Beach is the local choice for surfing and fishing. Swimmers, however, must watch out, as the water gets deeper very quickly and steeply. There are picnic facilities next to the lagoon, on the north side.

For prime photo opportunities, head to Cosy Corner Beach and capture shots of granite boulders and the area’s iconic orange lichen against a backdrop of white sand.

Binalong Bay Fishing

Fishing is a popular year-round pastime in Binalong Bay. The sheltered waters provide ample opportunities to reel in many species of fish. Colder months offer the best estuary and bay fishing, whereas rock and beach fishing is optimal in the spring and summer.

Meanwhile, conditions for deep sea fishing are ideal no matter the season. Bring your own boat or hire a charter for the day, taking advantage of Binalong Bay’s boat ramp to launch your vessel. Who knows, you might reel in a salmon weighing up to 3 kg!

Walks around Binalong Bay

Keep your eyes open for cockatoos, honeyeaters and even albatross, if you opt for the coastal trails. In springtime, take a colourful walk through fields of wild orchids and Banksia.

For more of a workout, spend the day at Mount William National Park, with its trails leading to the summit. This trek will take approximately 90 minutes.
