Description

Cocoon is an Architect designed retreat regularly featured in design journals both locally and internationaly. It is an unusual house, "the first glimpse of the house is breathtaking .An upturned boat. A zeppelin nestled against the hilside. It appears to float free of the earth........this is rare and wonderful. And it is what architecture should always do."[Houses magazine issue 34 2003]

accomodation

It is a compact house of two bedrooms with the master bedroom nestled in the nose of the building and a walk through bunkroom, more like sleeping in a boat than a conventional house. It has one large lightfilled view catching room where all living is done. The two glass walls of this room allow the magnificent views overlooking the Wye River valley and ocean into the house, one of these walls slides open to a balcony to allow the sense of living outside whilst being inside. There is a small open fireplace and a stylish resin clad bathroom.
This is no fusty cottage ,it is a clean lined modern house, stylishly detailed and simply furnished.
The entire interior is clad in lime washed plywood [with the exception of the green resin bathroom] the living areas are rectangular the bedrooms are curved ,the master bedroom is like the hull of a boat.

Location

"seen from afar this extraordinary holiday house looks like a zepplin crash landed in the Australian bush.... the house is a surreal presence in in the thickly wooded coastal landscape ." [The Architectural Review UK september 2003]
Cocoon is nestled on the side of the hill overlooking the verdant valley and ocean in Wye River,a small town on the Great Ocean road. It is set in quiet bushland and altough in the town ship of Wye River appears to have no imediate neighbours ,from within the house no other houses are visible [except the caravan park in the distant valley]. there are koalas in the trees and kookaburras on the balcony. It is a ten minute walk to the beach ,two minutes walk will take you into the forest.
There is no need of television in a house like this, in a location like this, being there is a unique experience.

Guest Reviews

  • "Cocoon is a lovely concept- it is an architect designed (and built) zeppelin nestled in the hills above Wye River- and there is a lot about it that is really gorgeous: the views to the ocean and valley, the bath with steaming hot water, the streamlined wood panelling and the location itself. Here are 10 aspects of the Cocoon experience that really should be brought to the attention of potential guests however: 1. There is no fly wire on the large sliding doors which encase the Cocoon- guests are provided with plug-in insect repellent which pumps fumes into the small space and kills mozzies and other creepy crawlies. Without using these chemical devices it is impossible to enjoy evenings and uninterrupted sleep; 2. The bed is a futon on a piece of hard board - if you have back problems this will make them worse, the bedroom is also quite stuffy; 3. Kitchen utensils and equipment are from the opp shop and very basic; 4. TV is 12 inch and probably 20 years old; 5. Every piece of furniture is stained and uncomfortable to sit on; 6. The cupboards are stuffed with other peoples stuff; 7. The septic tank smells and you have a lovely view of the caravan park; 8. The shag-pile rug leaves a lot to be desired as do the blankets which appear to have been slept on by dogs; 9. $330 per night is far too much to pay; and 10. Overall an uncomfortable experience and there are plenty of other places in the same price range which offer a much more luxurious experience."

  • "This place is a jewel in the bush with great views of the beach and valley. The space within the cocoon is a fantastic surprise and we had one of our most relaxing and enjoyable breaks in years. Thanks so much!"
