Description

Melaleuca is a delightful older-style cottage, set in a mountain garden, overlooking the sandstone bluffs of Shipley plateau, bushland reserve and the Kanimbla valley.

It sleeps six, with a queen size bedroom, a double bedroom and a third bedroom with double bunks - with electric blankets, doonas and pillows on all the beds. For infants there is a cot.
SHEETS AND TOWELS ARE NOT PROVIDED.

There is a sitting room with open fire (firewood can be purchased at the petrol station in Blackheath) and a separate dining room. A modern gas space heater provides warmth to the entire house.
The dining room opens to a spacious sundeck with superb, uninterrupted views.

The bathroom and kitchen have both been recently renovated.
The bathroom includes a bath and shower, and there is unlimited hot water.
The kitchen is equipped with refrigerator, electric stove with ceramic cooktop, microwave and dishwasher - and lots of quality crockery and cookware.

There is a television, CD player and lots of holiday reading and board games.
A telescope is provided to let you look at the moon and stars -clearly visible away from the city smoke.

During school holidays bookings of one week's duration or longer are preferred. Shorter bookings can be taken one month prior to the start of the holiday.

What can you do there?

Some of the most beautiful walks in the Blue Mountains start near Blackheath. Melaleuca overlooks the start of the Centennial Glen and Porter's Pass walks, which take you into a secluded valley by waterfalls, through rainforest and eucalyptus forest, down a gorge full of fresh water pools and around the sandstone cliffs that tower over the Kanimbla valley.
More ambitious treks into the Grose Valley start a 10 minute drive away on the other side of Blackheath.

There is abundant wildlife in the vicinity of Melaleuca. Yellow-tailed black cockatoos frequent the area, as well as wedge-tailed eagles, kangaroos and many types of lizard.

There is plenty of good food available at Blackheath, ten minutes walk away, including the fine-dining Vulcan's and the Blackheath Patisserie with its excellent sourdough breads.
All provisions can be bought locally from Blackheath village, which features a supermarket, greengrocer and butcher shops.

There are also many gift shops, art galleries and antique shops, including the converted Victory Theatre, which has multiple outlets within a vast space. A wonderful and inexpensive cafe is attached.

Other activities

Within a half-hour drive you can reach:

Guest Reviews

  • "This is a true Blue Mountains cottage experience - lovely cottage with large kitchen, dining room facing the valley and an expansive deck. The living room is cosy with a fire, for close conversation and may be too small for larger groups. I recommend it to anyone wanting to feel they are truly in the Blue Mountains."
    Marion, April 2009

  • "A really cute cottage. We stayed with another couple and the baby (we had our 3 yr old and our baby). Was cosy, but had enough space. The view is AMAZING. We will go back again when we get the time!"
    Jackie, April 2009

  • "The house was small but cosy and contained all we needed for the weekend. The view was magnificent. We enjoyed the walk from the house to Fort Rock. We didn't have long enough to read all the great books provided so will be visiting again."

  • "We had a lovely stay. It is very clean and tidy and everything works. Very quiet and close to some great bushwalks. It is small, but very cosy and easy to warm up --- always a plus on a cold, wet weekend. Excellent value for money."
