The City of Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in Australia. In 1815 it was proclaimed a town and experienced rapid growth in the 1850s and '60s, with the discovery of gold.
The town was gazetted as a city in 1885. Bathurst has some fabulous buildings of the early 1800's with an abundance of heritage buildings. With the recent beautification of the main streets, there is a delightful mixture of old and new, including the cast iron Victorian lamp-posts which adorn the busy shopping centre.
