Our stay at Macnicol Cottage in October 2007 was a delight. Our happy and friendly hosts, Robyn and Bruce, were never far away and were happy to provide assistance as required. We found Macnicol Cottage to contain everything we (and our dog, Libby) needed. As the yard is fully fenced Libby was free to roam without worry. Every care has been taken to accommodate people in wheelchairs including wide doorways and bathing. Macnicol Cottage is warm, inviting and very practical whether inside or outdoors. With polished timber floors, abundant natural light and ventilation, Macnicol Cottage looks and feels good in any weather. Macnicol Cottage is conveniently located to shops, river, and pleasant level walking areas and still is surprisingly peaceful, quiet and private. This is indeed a truly great getaway. We will be wanting to return again in 2008.

This is the most comfortable, convenient and stylish accessible cottage we had in 10 month of travelling in so called „wheelchair accessible accommodations“ around Australia.
Not only is there a lovely ramp, even access in the cottage, a hughe deck and even access to the garden, the covered car park with automatic doors and lights are just so thoughtful details. The cottage itself is so spacious, that you even could drive throuhg with a scooter. The bathroom and shower is also very roomy. And best, luckily no carpet, everywhere that lovely old wooden floor that makes it all look so cosy. So far to accessibility. My needs were perfectly covered in a kittchen, that provided anything I dreamt for 10 month, the tasteful crockery and pottery made it even more enjoyable to cook and take pleasure in our own prepared food on our favourite spot on the deck. The last month during our trip we learnt to make so many compromises in terms of design towards function. Some people obviously think handicapped persons just need „function“, but we also enjoy a modern and stylish condition to live it. Using a wheelchair does not mean one is blind! Thanks to Robin and Bruce who had an extraordinary hand to furnish and decorate the interior the way they did. And you get that all in a cosy „historic“ cottage“, that is so beautifully renovated that you think it is brand new. We hardly felt any pressure to leave the cottage as we felt so at home and missed out on most of the more than 30km accessible walks arround Ballina. Have a look at the palm tree in the garden, where a lovely parrot couple lives as well. And if there was any question or need for something, Bruce and Robin were more than happy to assist.
Amazingly Robin and Bruce have no hadicapped person in their family, they just did it as they heard about the difficulties to find good accessible accommodation. A friend'son, who is in a wheelchair, did the final function test. This is a kind of hospitality and thoughtfulness that did better than we experienced in so far 56 different accommodations for the last months. We will be back for sure.

We stayed with our two boys and were very impressed with everything about the cottage. It is absolutely beautiful, real attention to detail making it a great place for us to relax and enjoy our holiday. The owners are really lovely, very accommodating and happy to help in any way.

I would highly recommend staying at Macnicol Cottage and we will be returning in the future.

Hi Bruce, Just wanted to let you know that we really enjoyed staying at the cottage. It is an amazing job you have done in renovating,my husband is a carpenter and he is raving to everyone about how beautiful it is .Thank you for letting us stay there.Hopefully we will be back in summer so we can enjoy it even more .

During our recent visit to Macnicol Cottage, we were expecting a reasonable stay - however we were quite taken aback with this accommodation. As we had several young children travelling with us, we were limited in our options for a safe environment to allow the children to play, yet remain contained. We all enjoyed relaxing on the large verandah while the children played in the fenced, private back yard Macnicol Cottage was outstanding in this regard. Not only were we impressed with the appearance, set up and facilities available, the owners were more than accommodating with our requests and very personal with their service. This is definately a highly recommended place to stay, especially for those who have special needs, children or the elderly.
