Description

Overlooking magnificent Mt Solitary and centrally located between Katoomba & Leura on the corner of the Cliff Drive and Merriwa St., this grand home has been lovingly and tastefully restored, maintaining the best of the original features whilst integrating the most modern conveniences.
Established now for 5 years, our guest book speaks for itself.
Featuring 3 bedrooms - 2 with double beds and the 3rd with 2 singles, a new country style kitchen and two new federation style bathrooms, one with a claw foot bath, Solitary Retreat has been returned to a time when a weekend in the mountains was a stylish and considered experience. Characterized by its living room with original cedar panelling, polished boards, Persian carpets and open fire, Solitary Retreat is a snapshot of life in the 1920's. Immerse yourself in the ambience and delightful charm that this elegant home and its beautiful furniture creates.

Features

And then there is the view.Solitary Retreat is blessed with one of the very few genuine uninterrupted escarpment views on the Cliff Drive. Enjoy Mt Solitary and the Jamison Valley with your morning "cuppa" from bed. When you have finished savoring the view, stroll across the road to the Prince Henry Cliff Walk and take a leisurely 30 min walk through the World Heritage listed national park to the Three Sisters and Echo Point or go the other way to Leura Falls and enjoy some of the best views the mountains have to offer. We are only a couple of minutes drive from several golf courses, walking distance to galleries and the tourist bus stops right out front. We are uniquely located between two of Katoombas finest restaurants. The Rooster French restaurant is right next door (try the duck) whilst Solitary Restaurant and Kiosk is on the other side about 100 metres away. No need to drive. These two venues boast views to astound and cuisine to excite.

  • "I would defiantly recommend this property to couples and families. The house was beautiful, well appointed and warm . We stayed over a particularly cold week end and found that we were so snug ,the fire was just lovely and the central heating kept the home at a perfect temp . We plan to visit again with my parents as the property can easily cater for all of us. The location is excellent as we were central to all the local attractions . We loved it ! "

  • "Thanks so much for the opportunity to stay at your well appointed and comfortable property, which retains so many of the beautiful features of a classic Mountains home. As a former local, I can confidently state that it has a near perfect location, with stunning views from the front of the house, as well as great access to both Katoomba and Leura town centres and, of course, the amazing Jamieson Valley. • "This is a perfect holiday house in every sense. It was warm, had an open fire and lovely period furniture alongside modern conveniences. The selection of books included a series from 1920/30s of world's greatest adventures, amazing escapes, etc... Though we brought board games with us we played ones that were provided. The location and views are even better than they appear online and you can see the view from the master bed - perfect for those who enjoy breakfast in bed. Our three girls loved it as well (with minimal complaining from the 15yo even with the no TV on holidays rule) and we were lucky enough to experience some snowflakes falling, though they didn't reach the ground. Highly recommended."

  • "This is a lovely cottage in a superb setting. I cannot imagine a better view from the front door. The interior has an old fashioned feel, but every modern convenience is there. The cottage sleeps six and is very affordable. Thanks for making this cottage available."

  • "This is a simply delightful and cosy house. What really impressed us were the pre-war features such as the gas oven, gramophone, and old household utensils. These were beautifully and tastefully meshed with modern conveniences such as dishwasher and flat screen TV. The house was a real treat to the eye since the decorating was very innovative. We loved it."

  • "We have stayed in a number of houses while traveling around Victoria and NSW. All houses were very good but without a doubt the Solitary Retreat was the best. This beautifully thought out house has wonderful period details throughout. Each room, including the bathrooms, has been finished to perfection. Add to this the almost instant central heating, dishwasher, washing machine/dryer, to the little details like coffee, tea, cooking essentials, first aid kit, tissues etc. Nothing has been missed. It was a real pleasure to stay here. And I haven't even mentioned its location... Thank you very much."

  • "Our family spent close to 3 weeks traveling the east coast of Australia. One of our highlights was our visit to Katoomba. We spent 2 nights at "Solitary Retreat", and absolutely loved staying there. The booking process was easy, the location is perfect, and the home is outstanding. Right across the street we found the Prince Henry Cliff Walk which brought us right to the Three Sisters, and the Giant Stairway. The trail then takes you to the Scenic Railway for a quick and fun way out of the valley. Make sure to visit the Rooster Restaurant right next door. "Solitary Retreat" is awesome. If it wouldn't take us 30+ hours to get there, I'd love to go there again tomorrow. "

  • "Great accommodation! Looks much better than the pictures. Clean, quiet, cosy. Superb french restaurant just 10 meters from the gate. We stayed in the winter time and the cottage was very good heated."
