Description

McLaren Vale in Sth Australia is the centre of a picturesque wine producing area only 40 minutes from the centre of Adelaide. It's just a few kilometres from some of Australia's most spectacular and unspoilt beaches and a short drive to the Fleurieu Peninsula townships of Victor Harbor and Goolwa and the Murray River.
Just 3 kilometres from McLaren Vale village with its wineries and fine restaurants is historic Wirra Wirra Winery, home of the famous Church Block wine, which originally derived its name from the delightful building which is now Old Bethany Chapel B&B.
The chapel decor includes a number of suitably ecclesiastical antiques, and provides a comfortable retreat for a couple in beautiful surroundings.

History and renovations

Bethany Chapel is one of the area's very early buildings. its walls made of cob, an old English West Country construction method. Mud from the adjacent creek was mixed with small stones and straw and puddled by oxen, then poured between form work to make the walls, which were then rendered with lime mortar to a pale cream coloured finish. The roof was originally thatched. Recent renovations have kept to the original style as far as possible, while including modern finishes to suit current requirements.
The result is a charming and welcoming place to stay for a relaxing break, while still close to cafes and cellar door outlets in this lovely area.

Surroundings

The chapel is set in a large block , with vines on 3 sides, a small creek across the corner, and massive gum trees, olive trees, and a lawned area around the deck. It even boasts a small historic cemetery, with headstones to remember some of those who helped to build the original chapel.
Enjoy a barbecue under the trees, or just sample the wines of the area, perhaps the bottle of Wirra Wirra Church Block which is complimentary for visitors.

Everything has been thought of, and all furnitures and fitings of the highest quality, from the local wine on arrival down to the beautifully soft Sheridan towels. • "Old Bethany Chapel was a wonderful place to stay. The interior décor and surrounding vineyards gave it an almost other-worldly feel like stepping back in time and being completely isolated. It was the a fantastic getaway experience and highly recommended for anyone who needs to escape for a few days."
