  • "I stayed at Cumberland house for three nights and had 12 friends drop in an out for the weekend. We enjoyed the house and the country setting. Being city people we travelled between Ballarat for the Photographic Biennali and the Wedding Dress Exhibition at the Bendigo Art Gallery. It was great getting to both these towns from this location. We loved Maryborough which is a fantastic old country town, only 20 minutes away. The Maryborough Station Antique Emporium was such a great fine, we had an excellent dinner and there were some great antiques. None of us had ever been before. We liked Cumberland House. It was a nice place in a great location. We had lunch in the garden one day and listen to the bees buzzing in the background. Lovely. Ian was also a great host. "

  • "My kids and I had a very enjoyable week at Cumberland House. My children loved the bike rides. Ian was able to show us a fantastic gold-fields artifact collection at a neighbour's house which was quite amazing. Finding two nuggets in the region was also a great thrill for us. Thanks Ian. Peter"

  • "Lovely historic house with plenty of outdoor space for the kids to explore. Our host Ian was very welcoming and cooked us a great breakfast. He spent an afternoon showing us around the local area and the kids loved riding around on the back of the mower and going for a bike ride. Ian was exceptionally generous with his time. Thank you Ian for a fantastic weekend and we can't wait to come back."

  • "Kids liked the place especially bike rides and collecting eggs. Very nice, cosy house in quiet country location. Great host who went for bike rides with the kids. We stayed two nights and kids complained stay was not enough."

  • "We went to Cumberland House to do a 3 day Yr 12 French immersion camp. The students loved going to the country and mixing French work on practice exams with daily outings to nearby Goldrush towns, bike rides, discovering the nearby horse-riding school, cooking together in the kitchen, sitting on the side of the balcony inside the house observing what was happening downstairs. Teachers also appreciated the separate accommodation in the coach house. Our host, Ian de Lacy, has been wonderful in sharing his passion for and knowledge of the country and the Goldrush area around Dunolly in particular and assisting us with providing transport to his large and comfortable property, organising meals, shopping for our French cooking classes and providing bikes for 11 persons, as well as giving us a personalised tour of the region. Thanks to his passion, energy and commitment to our students' safety and happiness at all times, this wonderful event became all the more special!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed the past six days at Cumberland House. Ian's enthusiasm for the history and natural beauty of the area were infectious. He really went out of his way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves, from bike riding to visit old ruins and gold panning in the creek to helping him on the ride-on mower or relaxing in the hammock under the trees. It was a great lesson in living history for my grandchildren and lots of fun. "
