The Barn began life on the banks of the Shoalhaven River. It was built to house feed and stores for a small dairy holding in the early days of south coast settlement. When we discovered it 10 years ago, while visiting friends on a neighbouring property, it was looking in need of a fresh start and so, we dismantled it, put it on the back of a truck and brought it to our property on the outskirts of Berry.
We rebuilt it but we installed a galley kitchen and bathroom, replaced the plumbing and wiring, replaced some of the jarrah cladding and the entire roof, ran a veranda around it, and lavished it with paint internally. The furnishings are a mix of Victorian through to contemporary and the whole place is now fresh, warm and light. We love it!
The Barn sits high on the property at the end of a no through road, surrounded by trees, looking down the valley over vineyards, grazing land and forest all the way to the ocean at Seven Mile Beach, 10 kilometres away. In summer the cross breezes work effectively with the old barn door opening up to a private court yard and large French Doors opening on to the veranda. In winter, the fuel stove keeps things snug.
The site was once covered in lantana and privet but selective clearing and weeding has led to amazing natural rainforest regeneration of red, white and pencil cedars, koda, pittosporums, cleradendrons and whalebones for example. The bird life is prolific. It is a very private and peaceful hideaway just 5 minutes up the valley from Berry.
