Go to sleep at night to the muffled sound of the waves. If you’re an early riser you can watch the sunrise rise over the ocean, even enjoy a barbecue breakfast watching the waves breaking out front.
Pirates Cove is sometimes known locally as Turtle Cove due to the four or five huge Loggerhead turtles that inhabit the cove. It’s also not hard to spot the turtles and dolphins from your balcony, and also the whales as they migrate north in Auturn and return south in Spring.
Tip: If you are a photographer, use a polarizing filter to reduce the reflections on the water to get truly beautiful photos of these protected animals!
Between the months of May to November keep a lookout for whales as they pass closely to Scotts Head on their southern migration. Often mothers, but more particularly calves, need to take time out to rest on the journey, and Scotts Head has proven to be a favorite rest stop.
Dolphins are a common sight, surfing the waves at Pirates Cove, Little Beach and Main Beach off the point.
Scotts Head has 2 boat launching areas. For sea going boats use the boat ramp at Main Beach (‘The Point’) and for the river follow South Pacific Drive to the Weir Reserve. There is over 50 klm of navigable river, all perfect for fishing, swimming, and boating.
Scotts Head is truly the ‘real Aussie experience’. A fabulous picturesque coastal town located at the southern end of the Nambucca Valley, approximately halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and about 12 minutes from Macksville. (400kl/5hrs drive from Sydney and nearest airport at Coffs Harbour one hour away).
Excellent surfing conditions can be found at the three local beaches as well as the many nearby destinations. Main Beach in particular is very suitable for children and is patrolled during summer holidays and at weekends. As this beach stretches for more than 12 kilometers, it is very popular with seekers of solitude.
Many rocky promontories make it an ideal fishing area. There are boat ramps at Main Beach and at Warrell Creek. The creek, which runs parallel to the coast from Nambucca Heads before turning west around the foothills of Mt Yarrahapinni provides over 40 kilometres of accessible river for boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking; birdlife and many native animals are in abundance.
Mt Yarrahapinni and the Way Way State Forest are only minutes from Scotts Head and provide a cool retreat on summer days. The gravel road to the summit is accessible by family car in most weather conditions and the superb 360 degree views make the journey well worthwhile. The tranquil rainforests have well marked walking trails, pebbled creeks and clear waterholes.
