Fraser Beachfront Holidays at Poyungan Rocks is one of only a handful of absolute beachfront sites on Fraser Island. The accommodation includes a Holiday House sleeping up to eight persons and a Fishing Cottage sleeping up to nine. Each may be rented separately, or they may be booked together for parties of up to 17. Our resident caretakers also live on the site.

THE HOLIDAY HOUSE
The Holiday House is modern, comfortable and well appointed. Guest accommodation comprises the entire upper floor, featuring stunning views overlooking the beach and the Pacific Ocean. There are three bedrooms, a lounge room / dining room, kitchen, toilet and bathroom, with a full-length verandah facing the ocean and gas BBQ facilities on the deck.
The master bedroom contains a queen bed and ample storage space, while two smaller bedrooms each have trio bunks - a double bed on the bottom and a single above. Pillows, doonas, light blankets and mattress protectors are provided, but guests need to bring their own sheets and pillow cases. A twin tub washing machine is available upon request.
The house is fully equipped with furniture and kitchen equipment. Cooking facilities include a gas oven, hot plates and a grill doubling as a toaster. A large fridge/freezer provides generous cold storage, and a further tucker box freezer can be made available upon request. Kitchen supplies comprise a range of pots, pans, baking and casserole dishes, a gas kettle, mixing bowls and a good array of cooking utensils.
A complete set of crockery and cutlery is present for eight guests, including plates, bowls, mugs, cups, saucers, water glasses and wine glasses. Younger guests are provided for with a selection of plastic plates, bowls and cups. The house has a newly refurbished bathroom with toilet, shower and washbasin (no bath). Running hot water is supplied via a gas heating system. An additional toilet for guests is available outside at ground level.
THE FISHING COTTAGE
The Fishing Cottage is simple and homely, sleeping up to nine guests in a partitioned sleepout arrangement. There is one queen bed, one double bed and five single beds, all in excellent condition. As with the house, pillows, doonas, light blankets and mattress protectors are provided, guests need to bring their own sheets and pillow cases, and a twin tub washing machine is available upon request.
The cottage is fully furnished, having a gas hot water shower within a newly renovated bathroom, a separate toilet, a central lounge/kitchen/dining room and an outside paved, shaded entertainment area with a gas BBQ. Equipment includes a gas cooker and hob, two electric fridge/freezers, a tucker box freezer (available on request) and plentiful cooking utensils with settings for nine persons.
ON SITE FACILITIES
Common to both accommodations is the separate fish cleaning facility, the lawn and garden directly overlooking the beach, the surrounding bush covered sand dunes and the beach itself - not to mention the best bench seat view on Fraser Island.
Electricity is generated on site from wind power, solar panels, batteries and backup diesel generation. The wind generator is a whisper design producing minimal noise. Despite the availability of 240v power and backup systems, guests are requested not to bring any electrical appliances as these rapidly deplete the solar battery stores and risk overloading the system. Medical devices and phone or laptop chargers are acceptable.
Drinking water is obtained from an on-site bore and pumped to storage tanks on the hill. Fraser Island water is naturally sand filtered, making it amongst the purest in the world. However there can be an elevated mineral content, such that guests may prefer to drink fresh rainwater available from a separate tank at the property, or to bring their own.
Mobile phone coverage via Telstra is low strength but useable. No coverage is presently obtainable via other mobile service providers. Alternatively guests can buy a Telecard before arrival (available from post offices), allowing use of the caretakers' phone in the house to make calls that will be billed to the Telecard holder. Emergency contact is available through the caretakers' phone.
The caretakers live on site permanently and are there to ensure guests have a smooth holiday. They have an unsurpassed knowledge of the Island and will be happy to propose activities or destinations, to advise on travel routes and local conditions, to suggest favourite fishing spots or simply to share a drink and a chat.
On departure guests are asked to take all belongings with them, including rubbish please, and to leave their accommodation clean, tidy and ready for the next arrivals.

Location and Access
Fraser Beachfront Holidays is situated on the Eastern Beach of Fraser Island, just north of the Poyungan Rocks outcrop. It is about half way between Eurong (8 km to the south) and Happy Valley (7 km to the north). These are the two main resorts on the ocean side of the Island, each having a general store, groceries, post office, cafe and restaurant facilities. The Ranger and Police stations are also located 6 km to the south.
Access to the Island is via ferry either from Inskip Point at the southern tip of the Island or from Hervey Bay (River Heads) to Kingfisher Bay or Wanggoolba Creek jetty. Fraser Island is strictly four-wheel drive territory, and a high clearance 4WD vehicle - and off-road experience - is essential. Indeed on occasion the incoming journey can be an exciting introduction to the holiday.
From Inskip Point the property is just under an hour's drive, along spectacular beach scenery all the way. The beach itself is the gazetted road, and all normal road rules apply. However unlike most roads its width varies with the position of the moon, some parts regularly vanishing altogether. In this context guests should note that the beach around the southern end of the Island is generally passable for only about two hours either side of low tide.
Access from either of the Hervey Bay ferry terminals is via picturesque inland tracks through the rainforest plus a short stretch of beach driving, again taking typically about an hour. Follow signs to the Eastern Beach or Eurong. Tracks are generally well maintained but conditions may vary, becoming rough and boggy at times, soft and sandy at others. Guests are welcome to contact our caretakers before travelling, who will be happy to advise on the current situation.
Please note that Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service permits are required for all vehicles coming to Fraser Island. It is also advisable to check guidance on recommended tyre pressures, particularly if anticipating conditions of soft sand.
World Heritage listed Fraser Island is famous for its magnificent beaches, crystal clear lakes, fresh water flowing creeks, lush rainforests, 4WD trails, bushwalking, swimming, fishing, rock pools, sand blows, whale watching, turtles, dingos, wonderful birdlife - and peaceful and relaxing holiday spots to rival any on the planet.
The first and nearest local attractions may be enjoyed without even leaving the property. The Holiday House is designed for maximum viewing of the water. From the main bedroom guests may watch the annual migrations of humpback whales whilst still in bed. From the Fishing Cottage the viewing seat overlooking the beach is but a few steps across the lawn. From either accommodation, sunrise over the ocean can be breathtaking; breakfast may be had within sight and sound of the surf; lunch enjoyed on the beach or by the rock pools below; while the sun sinking behind the dunes may light the sky with spectacular sunsets as guests relax with an evening drink around the BBQ outdoor settings.
Practically right outside the front doorstep is one of the best fishing areas on the Island - a favourite for guests of all skills and ages. The Cottage has hosted generations of fishing families - including the owners - who have been holidaying at Poyungan Rocks for upwards of twenty years. Not just for experts, many a novice, child or adult, has experienced the excitement of their first catch here, leading to a lifetime's enjoyment hooked on the sport. Not to mention the simple pleasure and sheer delight of feeding the family with fresh fish straight from the sea.

THE EASTERN BEACH
The beautiful sands of the Eastern Beach stretch some 90km past the property to the north and south. 15 minutes drive to the north is freshwater swimming in popular Eli Creek, with the rusty remnants of the elegant Maheno ocean liner not far beyond. Going further are the famous coloured sands at The Pinnacles and Red Canyon, whilst the furthermost end of the beach is reached at Indian Head, well worth the climb to the top for stunning 360 degree views of the Island, the beaches, the surf and the ocean.
Past Indian Head another short stretch of beach leads to the Champagne Pools, offering sea water bathing in natural rock pools filled by surf washing over nearby rocks. Drivers can continue on to Orchid Beach and the more remote northern beaches beyond, but local advice should be sought as to prevailing conditions and how much further it is possible - or advisable - to go. Always leave good time for the return journey, bearing in mind the rising tide and reducing width of the beach remaining. Eli Creek, in particular, may become altogether impassable when the tide is high.
Lake Mckenzie is one of the jewels of Fraser Island, although in view of its popularity it's wise to get there early. The most straightforward access is via the well signposted inland tracks from Eurong, about an hour's drive overall from the property. A short walk leads to the picture postcard main beach and stunning blue waters just made for swimming. Most visitors go no further, but we recommend the ten minute stroll to the left around the lake and along the boardwalk to the equally magnificent but much less frequented second beach.
From Lake Mckenzie a one-way track leads around to Central Station, a beautiful clearing within the Island's unique tropical rainforest, and the focal point of logging activities from half a century past. Walking trails lead in all directions, of lengths varying from 20 minutes to several days. The short walk down to Wanggoolba Creek is a must, if only to marvel at impossibly clear waters silently flowing over the white sands of the valley floor.
From here, guests may enjoy the circular walk along Pile Valley and up and back back around the head of the creek. This area is home to some of the tallest timber on the island, with giant satinay trees towering up to 70m high, an extraordinary product of ecology given that the Island is formed almost exclusively of sand. A rather longer walk ascends through the forest to Basin Lake, less famous than Mckenzie but one of the prettiest on the island.
Other inland attactions include many more lakes, valleys, forests, sand dunes and walking trails, the Valley of the Giants featuring magnificent trees up to 1000 years old, extensive tourist drives of varying degrees of challenge, and the serene setting, shops and restaurants of eco-friendly Kingfisher Bay resort facing out over the Great Sandy Strait and Hervey Bay.
THE WESTERN BEACH
Adventure seekers may like to head over to the remote but stunning Western Beach. Accesses are from Happy Valley to Moon Point, from The Pinnacles to Woralie Creek or from Orchid Beach to Wathumba Creek. These are long trips, requiring attention to time and tides. Vehicles are permitted on the Western Beach from Moon Point to Wathumba only, but it may sometimes be boggy from buried weed or soft sand. Great care should be taken crossing the fast flowing creeks, which may be deceptively soft or deep, especially on an incoming tide. Over here it's advisable always to travel with more than one vehicle and to keep together.
For a pleasant afternoon's outing from the property, drive about 5 km to the south, take the popular walk into Lake Wabby and swim in the company of catfish that inhabit its striking green waters. For the energetic, the continuing walk over the far dune and through the bush up to the high forest lookout is highly recommended. Either way, return via the great sand dune with its spectacular vistas over the forest, beach and ocean.
For a lesser known stroll, try the circuit to the coloured sands of Rainbow Gorge and the eerie lunar landscape of Kirrar Sandblow. The entrance path is directly from the beach about 4 km north of the property, perfectly positioned for cool drinks or an ice cream afterwards at Happy Valley.
In conclusion may we ask you to treat our unique island with care and respect, be responsible for all rubbish, enjoy but don't encourage the dingos, swim safely, drive carefully and have a wonderful time.
In the spirit of Chief Seattle of the Suquamish - take from the Island only photographs and memories; leave on the Island only footprints and fondness - and a promise one day to return.
