LOCATION

Homebush West is approx. 15 km. west of the City and 3 km. from the Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush.

Our railway station is Flemington, less than 500 m away, just a 5-minute walk from "Mum's House". Trains run frequently, and it takes 30-40 minutes to get to the Harbour - $5.80 offpeak return adult fare, $2.90 for children. (Also, 7 buses a day run to and from the station, if you don't fancy the Flemington station steps; they will take you to Strathfield where there are ramps and lifts to the platform.)

We're about 10 minutes by private transport from the Olympic Park, or you can walk it in 30 brisk minutes! (In 2008, 3 wheelchair racers staying at "Mum's House" wheeled back and forth daily!) Or take the train one station west then change to the Sprint train for a short ride to Olympic Park.

We're just 2 stations from Strathfield, a central interchange, from where 1000 trains a day will take you to just about anywhere in NSW.

If you can drive to Homebush Bay Wharf, the Rivercat ferry commute to the City is quite magical. (Or take the train to Parramatta and catch the same ferry from there.)

"Mum's House" is about a 25-minute, $60. drive from the International Airport by taxi (about $65 from Domestic), or if just one person is travelling with little luggage, a $16.80 train ride is a viable option. If using the train, you could take it to Strathfield where there is a taxi rank, and the cab fare will be about $13. This avoids having to carry your luggage up and down the stairs at Flemington. (Cabs add 20% to the fare for travel between 10 pm and 6 am.)

Some indicative public transport fares (return, adult, offpeak; children under 4 are free, over 4 up to 16 are approx. half):
Flemo - all City stations (Central, Museum, St. James, Town Hall, Circular Quay)-$5.80
Flemo - Olympic Park $5.80 (wkly - $33.)
Flemo - Parramatta - $4.60 ($3.40 single)
Flemo - Bondi Beach - $10.80 (includes bus)
Flemo - Manly - $19.80 (includes ferry)
Parramatta - Circular Quay (by Rivercat) - $7.00 (one-way, any time)
Homebush Bay - Circular Quay (by Rivercat) - $7.00 (one-way, any time)

There are several attractive low-cost fare schemes (eg, $51 weekly MyMulti2 that covers trains, buses, ferries within the area you're most likely to use) depending on the time frame and geography of travel you wish to undertake. Family Funday Sunday - $2.50 per person for all day travel on CityRail, Sydney Buses, Sydney Ferries and participating private bus companies. Available every Sunday, when a minimum of one adult and one child related by family are travelling together. There is also a MyMulti Day Pass for $21, covering trains, buses and ferries.

Local Attractions

The Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush was the site of the 2000 Olympics, and now is a hub for many sporting, and other, events. There are 2 stadiums, the marvellous Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre (you'll never get the children out of there!), the very busy Sydney Olympic Sports Centre, and the lovely Bicentennial Park, home to thousands of migratory birds, the Golden Orb Spider and other fascinating, harmless Australian wildlife. You can rent bikes (& helmets) there as well.

Go to the Sydney Olympic Park's web (see Local Knowledge) site to see what events are taking place at the Athletic Centre, the Golf Centre, the Sports Hall, the Tennis Centre, and the myriad other venues.

We're just 2 minutes' walk from the Hudson Park Golf Course, an 18-hole, par 60 accredited course, or 5 minutes' drive from Strathfield Golf Club, which is par 71.

The new 38-lane AMF bowling centre is 5 minutes away.

Rosehill Race Track is a 15-minute drive away, while shopping centres, cinemas, and houses of worship are within 15 minutes' transport.

Cook's River Cycleway, Rookwood Necropolis (one of the best surviving examples of a Victorian cemetery in the world), and Paddy's Flemington Markets are all nearby.

One of Sydney's biggest and best clothing/homewares disposal complexes, Direct Factory Outlet (DFO), is near Olympic Park, and can be reached by car or bus. The flashy new Rhodes Shopping Centre, with the biggest IKEA in the Southern Hemisphere, is just a 5-minute drive away.

Homebush West has many well-frequented Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants and a bottle shop. Just 2 suburbs west (but with a change of trains) is wonderful Turkish food, and 1 suburb east are Sri Lankan and Indian restaurants.

Amazingly, considering the low tariff and comfortable accommodation, we're no more than 40 minutes from Sydney's downtown, with all its exciting sights and events, like the Opera House and the Harbour.

TALES FROM THE GUEST BOOK

Jim and I have ...gone everywhere and seen just beautiful sights! We have loved being able to cook our own meals and not have to eat out all the time.
We have used the trains, ferries and buses. Sydney's public transportation is SO easy to use and convenient!
Our daily alarm clock will be missed when we get home. The birds are amazing!

Having been in a campervan for 3 months it was just what we needed - a comfortable, homely place to relax, and yet we still managed to explore some of the delights that Sydney has to offer.

Seeing a different country from a hotel room is never as good as staying in a home, for that's how I felt about my stay. I called it going home every night. It's good I took so many pictures of ..the birds..; I can't believe I saw such beautiful (exotic) creatures outside every morning.

I do hope I can come back again, maybe bring my daughter, as I know she would love to come.

Thanks for a wonderful stay at "Mum's House". You have it so well appointed, I wanted for nothing!! Whilst it was a frenzied stay during the National Alpaca Show where I was working my trade display stand for 12 hours per day, I was able to easily relax and what a great place to retreat from the madness over in 'the precinct', is "Mum's House".
All...the little touches are noticed and made the difference!!

What a blessed time of refreshment we had here at the abounding oasis of Mum's House. The lorikeets, the sensitive mural, windchimes and abundant flowers charmed us into backyard picnics and barbecues.

Thank you for your wonderful set-up, you have provided many extras in the unit that we have not encountered in other accommodation. We were amazed at traffic delays while driving during peak periods. We would strongly encourage travel as much as possible by public transport (either by train from Flemington or by River Cat from Olympic Park, if you can drive there). A trip to Flemington (Sydney) Markets is a must for people who like their fresh fruit & vegetables. We found Homebush West very central for accommodation as it is easily accessible to most parts of Sydney.

A lovely place to stay while we were visiting our family in Croydon. I don't think I've ever seen such an array of information on the City and what to do. Being bird-watchers it was interesting to see the rainbow lorikeets, sulphur-crested cockatoos and the spotted doves coming down for food. Thought the mural was fascinating.

We needed a home for 6 weeks whilst we waited until we could move into our new home. A special spot was needed for 2 adults and their four-legged furry "baby". Lucky for us - we found "Mum's House". We are so grateful for the care, love and time that was lavished on our much spoilt little dog. It has been the wettest July for 61 years!!! but all three of us have been warm, dry and very, very cozy. (One of them - guess which one - in Anna's house!).

What a beautiful cottage you have....One reason we came was to enjoy the last AC/DC tour that will ever be performed. For the time we stayed with you we did all the tourist things like the Sydney Tower & Skywalk, Aquarium, Hyde Park War Memorial, all the ferries to various points in Sydney, BridgeClimb, afternoon tea at the Lindt Cafe (yummy) at the Cockle Wharf, Monorail ride around the city, Bondi Beach. All recommended. The local food is great. We tried Sun Sun Kitchen (the best) on the Crescent.

Thank you very much for this lovely, cosy, "homy"place. We all have enjoyed... the house with its charm and comfort, the garden with all its beauty, the birds, the shadow from the trees, your wonderful unique mural, the swing ...and everything for the children. What a "find" your dear little cottage was.... We are sure that the relaxing surroundings of "Mum's House" helped B. to her 3 Gold Medals (at the NSW Swimming Titles)!! Enjoyed shopping for dinner ingredients at the local Asian grocers, butchers, etc. Catching the train into the city for a "spot of shopping" was easy - 5 minute walk to Flemington Station and then 25 minutes to Town Hall Station.

We have spent the last 8 days here ..and have enjoyed every minute of it, everything we require and so very clean. We have loved the little garden and the birds are truly amazing. During the time we have been here we did not have a car but it has been so easy on the trains and ferries; it's definitely better without one. Some of the highlights of our time here were the Blue Mountains (by train), Riverboat Postman, Chinese Tea Gardens, Parramatta Rivercat trip, Botanical Gardens, and many more. P & MC, Kent, UK, 1/07

Reluctantly we're moving on to Melbourne to a nameless 4-star hotel, which will not offer us the homely atmosphere we have enjoyed so much here. Despite the 'Ashes' defeat we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Sydney and will be back in 2012 to hopefully give a better performance!

"Mum's House" has proven..with the grandchildren...to be the ideal compromise (due to homesickness) - 7 minutes from home and easy visits from Mum and Dad. We have been out every day, the house is conveniently located and Sydney public transport has been excellent. Thank you Anna for your warm welcome when we arrived. Your cottage has been cosier than I had imagined. We loved waking up to the birds each morning. Thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality during our week in Sydney. The 'Travellers' Tips' books are a great resource and Mum's House was a comfortable, pleasant place to stay. D. & N. enjoyed their 'job' of spreading the (bird) seed each morning. Your garden offers a most peaceful haven from the hustle and bustle of Sydney and it was nice to come back to a home each day, rather than a hotel. - M & K McG & sons, Vic., 5/04

You're so close to Olympic Park and the city and we loved exploring the Asian shops nearby too. It's so comfortable and so much better than we thought we'd be able to afford - great to have a real kitchen to cook in and lounge room to hang out in. We really appreciated the care you took in setting it up, helping us find our feet in Sydney and making us feel welcome - R & LS, & H, Adelaide, S.A. 9/04

  • "Dear Anna, thank you for let us to have "Mum's House" like OUR HOME when my parents (75yrs) and I in Sydney for 8 nights. We all love it, it's so cute and handy to take a train around Sydney - north to Newcastle, south to Kiama, west to Blue Mountains and so on... I past your card to one of my mum's friend, they might go Sydney for holiday soon, and I wiil come to see you with my daughter and husband too. Thanks again and take care. Mei, October 2011 "

  • "Wow! Mum's House is so very cute and has all the comforts of home! I found that it is central to everything - shops, trains, sightseeing and of course, Acer Arena where I recently saw the Eagles Concert. My must do's are: The Rocks markets on a Saturday & Sunday with a vast array of good quality items and various types of international cuisine which are very popular and a must try! The Botanical Gardens are beautiful at the moment after the recent rains. The best value James Cook cruise is the Middle Harbour Coffee Cruise which runs twice daily and has morning/afternoon tea with commentary. It's a fantastic way of seeing the Sydney Harbour taking 2 hrs. Lastly visit the First Emperor exhibit in the Sydney Art Gallery. China's entombed warriors are here until 13 March, 2011. Cost $20 single, $15 concession, Art Gallery free. Well worth seeing! Thank you Anna for your wonderful hospitality, generosity and thoughtfulness. Sheree McCoombes "

  • "We stayed here for 4 weeks when we emigtrated to Australia. Mum's Place is lovely, it felt like a home. After moving half way round the world with the stresses of trying to settle in and find somewhere permament to live, it was so nice to come back at the end of each day to this comfortable and cosy little cottage. When we first arrived we had a lovely greeting and we had been left the essentials in the fridge. Close to shops, train stop and the city. Nice local walks and takeaways. Lovely garden with wonderful birds. Anna was very helpful and hospitable. Highly recommended!"

  • "Mum's House is pretty much everything you could want for an enjoyable stay away from home. This was a fantastic place to stay - comfortable, homely, and well stocked with good appliances (digital TV, DVD player, cheap broadband Internet, washing machine, gas heating etc.). In addition to the accomodation itself, the proprieter is one of the nicest and most helpful "landlords" I have ever met. She was extremely accomodating and helpful right the way through my visit. If I were being picky, I would say that a clothes dryer and a dishwasher might be nice, but at the end of the day these are very minor things that aren't necessary. In summary, Mum's House gets ***** FIVE STARS from me - Highly Recommended!"

  • "Mum's House was absolutely lovely. Such a warm and inviting house and lady. We were there for the National Swimming Championships and that is a very stressful time as a Mum. It was so nice at the end of the evening to come home to such a homely house, where we all felt comfortable and relaxed and very much at home. I can highly recommend 'Mums' House' at all the swimming POOS. "

  • "We stayed at Mum's house for 18 days in December 2008 whilst our house renovations were completed to make our home wheelchair accessible. Anna was so hospitable and helpful. She allowed us to bring our dog. She has a kennel in the back yard that Riley made good use of. She provided a portable ramp to provide wheelchair access for my husband into Mum's house. If you are thinking about staying anywhere else you are crazy!!!!"
    Greg & Daria, January 2009

  • "I took my elderly parents with me and we all had a wonderful time. We liked feeding the birds everyday and found we were not far from shops and parks and some attractions we wanted to see. It was a lovely area and not too far from the city by train. Thanks for the wonderful time."
    Kathy, July 2008

  • "Having 2 young boys it proved to be an ideal place to stay. The garden was like an oasis. Anna was very welcoming. The house was central to anywhere we wanted to go and unlike staying closer to the city there weren't the traffic hassles, we managed to go to lots of places and not once did we pay a toll - bonus."
    Paul & Julie, December 2007

  • "Service and attention to all our needs couldnt have been better. Much more personal and friendly than all the "big motel groups". We will definately stay there again."
    Carolyn & Craig, December 2007
