Lighting is excellent throughout the house and surrounds, and window coverings afford total privacy. Vertical blinds cover the glass doors in the lounge and main bedroom, both of which lead out to small decks. Parking There is always space to park your vehicle on the street in front of the property. (Speak to the owner if on-street parking would be a problem for you.)
The owner lives across the courtyard, and is happy to provide sightseeing advice. We have an extensive collection of brochures about favourite Sydney and NSW tourist spots. We also supply telephone and street directories plus transport schedules for our guests' use.
This is a cosmopolitan area, with shopping nearby (Coles, Woolworths, Aldi in suburbs close by, and local Asian shops) and public transport is just 5 minutes away. There is a pretty 'chain of parks' close by for your morning walk or run.

Homebush West is approx. 15 km. west of the City and 3 km. from the Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush.
Our railway station is Flemington, less than 500 m away, just a 5-minute walk from "Mum's House". Trains run frequently, and it takes 30-40 minutes to get to Circular Quay - $5.20 offpeak return adult fare, $2.60 for children. (Also, 7 buses a day run to and from the station, if you don't fancy the Flemington station steps; they will take you to Strathfield where there are ramps and lifts to the platform.)
We're about 10 minutes by private transport from the Olympic Park, or you can walk it in 30 brisk minutes! (Recently, 3 wheelchair racers staying at "Mum's House" wheeled back and forth daily!) Or take the train one station west then change to the Sprint train for a short ride to Olympic Park.
We're just 2 stations from Strathfield, a central interchange, from where 1000 trains a day will take you to just about anywhere in NSW.
If you can drive to Homebush Bay Wharf, the Rivercat ferry commute to the City is quite magical. (Or take the train to Parramatta and catch the same ferry from there.)
"Mum's House" is about a 25-minute, $55. drive from the International Airport by taxi, or if just one person is travelling with little luggage, a $15.00 train ride is a viable option.
Some indicative public transport fares (return, adult, offpeak; children under 4 are free, over 4 up to 16 are approx. half):
Flemo - Central - $4.60
Flemo - all City stations (Museum, St. James, Town Hall, Circular Quay)-$5.20
Flemo - Olympic Park $3.40 (wkly - $21.)
Flemo - Parramatta - $4.20 ($3.00 single)
Flemo - Bondi Beach - $9.20 (includes bus)
Flemo - Manly - $15.60 (includes ferry)
Parramatta - Circular Quay (by Rivercat) - $7.70 (one-way, any time)
Homebush Bay - Circular Quay (by Rivercat) - $6.40 (one-way, any time)
There are several attractive low-cost fare schemes (eg, $43 weekly Travel Pass that covers trains, buses, ferries within the "green" zone) depending on the time frame and geography of travel you wish to undertake.
The Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush was the site of the 2000 Olympics, and now is a hub for many sporting, and other, events. The V8 car races are on from 4-6/12/09. There are 2 stadiums, the marvellous Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre (you'll never get the children out of there!), the very busy Sydney Olympic Sports Centre, and the lovely Bicentennial Park, home to thousands of migratory birds, the Golden Orb Spider and other fascinating, harmless Australian wildlife. You can rent bikes (& helmets) there as well.
Go to the Sydney Olympic Park's web (see Local Knowledge) site to see what events are taking place at the Athletic Centre, the Golf Centre, the Sports Hall, the Tennis Centre, and the myriad other venues.
We're just 2 minutes' walk from the Hudson Park Golf Course, an 18-hole, par 60 accredited course, or 5 minutes' drive from Strathfield Golf Club, which is par 71.
Lollipop's Playland and Cafe, for the littlies, is a 5-minute drive away, as is the new 38-lane AMF bowling centre.
Rosehill Race Track is a 15-minute drive away, while shopping centres, cinemas, and houses of worship are within 15 minutes' transport.
Cook's River Cycleway, Rookwood Necropolis (one of the best surviving examples of a Victorian cemetery in the world), and Paddy's Flemington Markets are all nearby.
One of Sydney's biggest and best clothing/homewares disposal complexes, Direct Factory Outlet (DFO), is near Olympic Park, and can be reached by car or bus.
Homebush West has many well-frequented Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants and a bottle shop. Just 2 suburbs west (but with a change of trains) is wonderful Turkish food, and 1 suburb east are Sri Lankan and Indian restaurants.
Amazingly, considering the low tariff and comfortable accommodation, we're no more than 40 minutes from Sydney's downtown, with all its exciting sights and events, like the Opera House and the Harbour.

We enjoyed "Mum's House" immensely. It was perfectly suited to our needs. You provided everything anyone could want and more. The pictures of family added a homey touch. We also appreciated the proximity to Flemington Station connecting wherever we wanted to go with frequent schedules and reasonable fares.
Bill is going to miss "his" birds. First thing every morning he made sure there was seed and water and they provided great pleasure. B.&B.H., London, ON, Canada, 5/08

Thank-you for opening your doors to us. "Mum's House" was perfect for our stay. The ramp you put outside for us was wonderful and worked like a charm. My month's placement as a student nurse at Strathfield Private (Hospital) has flown. It's been hard being away from my home 'out west' but this wonderful little house has made me feel much less homesick. Thanks heaps Anna for your friendliness and attention to detail and for putting the outside light on for me when I was out late. S.E., Dubbo, 11/07

We had already become fast friends through email, before we ever met you.....We will recommend "Mum's House" to anyone wanting to spend time in Sydney. The location is convenient, the area safe, and it is so affordable. Being able to enjoy the garden and the colourful birds, listening to the lovely classical music station is so different from being in a hotel. I & MY, Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada, 2/07

We have spent the last 8 days here ..and have enjoyed every minute of it, everything we require and so very clean. We have loved the little garden and the birds are truly amazing. During the time we have been here we did not have a car but it has been so easy on the trains and ferries; it's definitely better without one. Some of the highlights of our time here were the Blue Mountains (by train), Riverboat Postman, Chinese Tea Gardens, Parramatta Rivercat trip, Botanical Gardens, and many more. P & MC, Kent, UK, 1/07

Reluctantly we're moving on to Melbourne to a nameless 4-star hotel, which will not offer us the homely atmosphere we have enjoyed so much here. Despite the 'Ashes' defeat we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Sydney and will be back in 2012 to hopefully give a better performance!
Transport links from Flemington ideal, buy a weekly ticket (Travel Pass - $41) - great value for money. SH, PR, & VB - Essex, U.K., 1/07

What a fabulous start to our new life "Down Under". The house is so welcoming and homely, it was fabulous to arrive to after our long journey from the U.K. Our daughter has loved seeing the birds every day and playing in the garden. We have enjoyed exploring Flemington and Strathfield and the Olympic site.
Thanks so much for being such a thoughtful hostess and making our first few weeks in Sydney so enjoyable.

"Mum's House" has proven..with the grandchildren...to be the ideal compromise (due to homesickness) - 7 minutes from home and easy visits from Mum and Dad. We have been out every day, the house is conveniently located and Sydney public transport has been excellent. The children enjoyed their stay, loved the birds, the quoits, the darts and the children's books.
...the house is great, very comfortable and we hope to return again.

Thank you Anna for your warm welcome when we arrived. Your cottage has been cosier than I had imagined. We loved waking up to the birds each morning. The call of the Australian ravens had us puzzled for a while. "Mum's House" has been much nicer than a hotel to come back to at the end of a day and 'blob out'.
The weekly travel pass has enabled us to get around very easily and cheaply - never having to wait for a train for more than a few minutes has been great.
