Description

"OurSecret" is Helen's private and charming Katoomba cottage. It is self-contained and fully furnished, including a gas log fire, a modern kitchen and bathroom, and currently just one one Queen-sized bedroom (more rooms available soon). All linen is supplied including doonas and towels.

The cottage is based on an 1880s miners home with its typical Australian Edwardian-Federation timber exterior (1920s style), now decorated indoors with sensitivity to its quaint heritage character.

Kitchen: Dishwasher, electric oven, microwave, natural gas cooktop and other appliances are available and you can enjoy your meals (self-catered) in the sunny conservatory-style sitting area beside the new modern kitchen (double-glazed for winter breakfasts), or al fresco on the open deck.

The comfortable heritage lounge room includes satellite TV (ABC, 7, SBS, NITV) and local and Australia-wide touring information, with a gas logfire stove within the original sandstock brick fireplace which makes it really cosy.

ENVIRO-AWARE: Recycled materials have been used wherever possible in the renovating of this cottage, along with passive design features including double-glazing, smart lighting, solar garden lights & full insulation. The mature garden has been re-designed to be more native-bird friendly. We are also paying more to support 100% wind-powered electricity, and 100% carbon-offset for our natural gas usage (certified by Origin).

Maximum adults = 2. Minimum stays apply.

** Not suitable for children under 18, babies, or wheelchair users.

Where is "OurSecret" ? What can we do here?

The cottage is located on the tourist (south) side of Katoomba, about 900m from the station, so it is close to the main attractions, National Park bushwalks, restaurants and galleries. It faces north over its own garden, which includes a small pond, lovely Autumn colours, and unusual flowering bulbs and cherry blossoms in Spring. The mature garden has been enhanced with native flowering plants that are attracting the unique Blue Mountains birdlife. Bowerbirds and Honeyeaters, including Wattlebirds are regular visitors.

Short, near-level walks from the cottage take visitors to the Lurline Street galleries, restaurants, information centre, craft shops, and to Echo Point where the famous "Three Sisters" formation can be seen - or walked to along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk. This excellent bushwalk takes in the most spectacular views of Blue Mountains National Park. Connecting tracks start as close as 100 metres from the cottage.

All the highlights of Katoomba/Leura/Wentworthfalls can be reached by Explorer/Trolley bus from a stop 50 metres away, and there is no need for a car. The new Coffee Shop at Hotel Blue in Lurline Street (just 200 metres away) sells Explorer Bus Passes - and excellent coffee! For going further there are connecting buses and trains, tour buses, car hire and taxi services available.

Katoomba township has supermarkets (one open till late), specialty stores, a multitude of restaurants and cafes, art and craft galleries, live shows, large-screen movies, churches, bush-sports and tour services, hospital, regular Cityrail trains, local buses, taxis, car hire, laundromats, Medicare/Centrelink, and similar services expected in the City.

Recommendations:

The Avalon Restaurant at the top of Katoomba Street opposite the Carrington Bar for great dinners and views. Reservation is suggested.

Lunch or coffee in the Hartley Valley. The historic Ambermere-Rose Inn is our daytime favourite, first licensed to Joseph Collits in 1846, brother of Maria, one of my ancestors!

Further afield are the Blue Mountains, Gardens of Stone, and Wollemi National Parks, plus Jenolan Caves, the Zig-Zag railway, Mudgee vineyards, Bathurst, and beautiful Hartley and Megalong Valleys which provide opportunities for bushwalking, off-road touring, horse-riding, mountain biking, rock climbing, abseiling, canyoning, and wildlife viewing. Local guiding and instructing companies can be found in the main shopping area of Katoomba. OurSecret Cottage is in an excellent position to serve as a base for seeing the Central West and Central Tablelands Regions.

  • "We loved this cottage. Kitchen & Bathroom were modern and very clean. The log gas fire was very cosy on one cold evening. The glassed-in room overlooking the garden was much used and I loved the sunny aspect and outside area. This is great value for money and we would happily stay there again."

  • "lovely stay, cute cottage well positioned for echo point and three sisters. The photos don't do this place justice! it is much nicer than it looks! we would definately stay again"

  • "I enjoyed a lovely 2 day getaway at Our Secret Holiday Cottage with my best friend. Have not stop raving about the place since I left. Such a great location and a fully equiped house filled with little personal touches. Wines by the fire at night and breakfast in the beautiful garden. Highly recommended and can't wait to go back."

  • "We had a wonderful stay at Our Secret Cottage. The photos on the site did not do the cottage justice, and we really appreciated the mix of modern, renovated bathroom and kitchen, with the quaint old world lounge and bedroom. Having a private cottage was great, as it gave us privacy and space, however the cost was not much more than a small hotel room. We would definitely recommend 'Our Secret Cottage' to others. "

  • "What a lovely little cottage surrounded by quaint cottage gardens, not what I expected was very overwhelmed by the clean modern facilities within walking distance to an array of eats and things to see, we had a very special weekend am sure the next guest will have just as special a time."

  • "Sometimes you just need to get away from the city, work and home and have some time out. That's exactly what we did and had a great weekend at Our Secret Holiday Cottage. It was a great place to base ourselves and head out to explore the surrounding areas. Perfectly cosy and welcoming. Darren & Rebecca"

  • "We arrived in the dark on a cold wintery Friday night only to realise we had booked the wrong weekend (so no key)! We managed to contact Chris and Helen and they were fantastic. While we went for dinner in Katoomba, Chris drove an hour to deliver the key to us - luckily no one else was booked in for the weekend. As we were in and out during the weekend it was wonderful to be able to leave the gas heater on low. This place had everything we needed and more - a comfy bed, great shower, heated floor in bathroom, lovely kitchen and a sunny verandah looking out on their secret garden. We'll be back ... probably for next years Great North 100 race!!! Many, many thanks for saving our weekend. Kate & Jonathan "

  • "Very convenient location - we could walk to Echo Point and into Katoomba. Close by (just around the corner) was the the Swiss Cottage Restaurant and an the art gallery. Wonderfully cosy lounge area with a welconing gas fire, fantastic for the cold snap we experienced while there. Bedroom was lovely and warm with the heaters and electric blankets, and the heated bathroom floor was a bonus! Lovely, neat, cosy little place."
