Description

A very warm welcome to Chequers Court. This classic 1880s mountains weatherboard home retains the quirkiness and charm of the period with today's comforts.

Gather the family - all generations -- or a group of friends and spend some time relaxing and discovering the delights of quiet starry nights and enjoying long discussions and games around the kitchen table.

The area is fantastic all year round -- autumn and winter are great for long walks in the crisp mountain air, sharpening your appetite for steaming soup, hearty casseroles and hot fruit crumble. April and May display peak autumn colour. June is Winter Magic Festival. July is Yulefest (Christmas in July). In Spring the gardens are spectacular and it's still cool enough in the evenings to enjoy the open fire and hearty meals. Summer has beautiful days with a little crispness in the early morning and the comfort of a blanket at night. Bliss!

The house and garden

Chequers can accommodate up to 10 people in the house and separate cottage. The property is usually booked as one item, but if you are a smaller group and would like to rent the house only (6 people), that may be possible too. The cottage is never booked separately so you still have the property to yourselves.

See the floorpan in the picture gallery to get an idea of the layout. Kind of like a Cluedo board without the secret passages!

The main house has 3 bedrooms. Bedrooms 1 & 2 have queen beds, and Bedroom 3 has a king bed which can also be made up as twin beds. There are two bathrooms in the house. The main with a clawfoot bath and separate shower.

The kitchen is eat-in with a large table and chairs, large open fireplace, 2 sinks and preparation areas, dishwasher, microwave, regular oven. The BBQ connected to natural gas is just outside the kitchen door and is under cover.
The table from the games/dining room next to the kitchen can extend the kitchen table to accommodate 10 people.

There is also a library/sitting room with a wide range of books to choose from,. The formal lounge has a 3D TV and DVD and gas log fireplace. The enclosed verandahs wrapped around the house provide more cosy nooks to curl up with a book.

The separate cottage has a further 2 bedrooms, living area with TV/DVD, and another bathroom. This is a great space for the "kids domain". Either bedroom can be made up as a king bed or as twins. The cottage is not rented separately, but provides additional accommodation for the main house, so your family or group are the only occupants of the property.

Chequers Court sits on a half-acre block so there is plenty of garden to explore. The rhododendrons in the front garden are over 100 years old and are an absolute picture in Spring. The courtyard with its table and chairs seats 12 people and is a lovely relaxing place for breakfast on a sunny morning.

Blackheath

Blackheath has a National Parks Visitors Centre where lots of local information on the area can be found. Details for walks from gentle strolls to more adventurous hikes can be obtained here. There are many walks, waterfalls, lookouts and spectaular scenery to enjoy. Blackheath also features a picturesque golf course, the Rhododendron gardens and the "Rhododendron Festival" in the first weekend of November.

Blackheath has antiques, old and new books at the legendary "Gleebooks", jewellery, clothes, galleries, gifts and more, but the real heart of this town is good food and good living!
Apart from great coffee at any number of cafes, there is also good local shopping including a fabulous butcher, fruit and veg store, delicatesans, two well stocked supermarkets and two sourdough bakeries. So the choice is yours - shop and cook at home, or try one of the many eateries. In addition to the cafes and pubs, Blackheath has several award-winning restaurants including "Vulcans", "Ashcrofts" and "Escarpment". Booking in advance for these is a good idea.

If you happen to be in town on the 2nd Sunday of the month, there is the growers market in the Community Centre (cnr Gardiners Rd and Great Western Highway). It showcases local producers for fresh fruit and vegetables, assorted cheeses, freshly made breads, olives, oils, free range eggs, deli items, meats, freshly made pasta & sauces, baked goods, seafood, condiments, freshly cut flowers, plants, seedlings, plus much more.

There are of course many more things to do. It is a short drive to Shipley Plateau (visit Logan Bray Apple Orchard), Hargreaves Lookout and Megalong Valley (which incidentally has a great tea room/cafe). There are many local galleries featuring the work of local artists. The Zigzag railway is a short drive away. A day trip to Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens or Jenolan Caves is well worth the effort. Another fabulous experience is a visit to "Secret Creek" wild life sanctuary with cafe/restaurant in a fabulous bush setting in Lithgow.

  • "We had a wonderful family reunion at Chequers Court. I have never stayed at a better equipped holiday home. Plenty of matching glassware and crockery; no op-shop kitchenware here. Beautifully clean too. The spacious kitchen/dining room with its large table is a perfect place for eating and chatting but there are also plenty of little sunny spots to relax alone with a book or to have a doze. Books, games, puzzles - everything is provided. New candles on the table were another indication of the attention to detail and generosity offered in this unique house. Thank you very much."

  • "What a wonderful quirky cottage! We had a family get together recently at Chequers Court. Lots of games of charades in the lounge, Uno at the table, reading in the sun on the verandah and meals shared around the kitchen table in front of the fire. We will be back!! The house suited us perfectly with plenty of nooks and crannies to get away for a quiet read or to be all together in front of the fire. Fantastic!"

  • "A fantastic place to stay with a large group - plenty of room for 10 adults! Other than the bush walks during the day, we pretty much lived in the very well appointed kitchen with its roaring open fire - the main feature of the house in our view. We'll definitely be back. "

  • "We had a girls weekend here an absolutely loved it! There was lots of room for everyone to sleep and everything was really clean and well kept. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would need. I would recommend this property 100%. "

  • "5 Couples had a fantastic golfing/shopping weekend, we all decided to eat in, sitting next to the open fire rather than go out! Very cosy. Amenities were as though you were in your own home. Plenty of room to be all together, or find a quiet corner to read and relax. Great ambience, we will definitely book again. "

  • "Lovely house in a great location, on the road towards Govett's leap. It was a very cold week-end and we appreciated the various forms of heating, from open fireplace in the big kitchen to electric blankets on all the beds. The host is very friendly and very helpful. We will be back, thank you! "

Plenty of room for 11 of us and although the weather was miserable (next time I am ordering sunshine)we all had a perfect time. The ages of the family were from 5 to 90yo and ALL left with high praise & big smiles. It is truely a find. • "Had a wonderful Christmas with family, such a memorable time and in such a great place! The fully equipped kitchen made it so much easier as food and family at Christmas is so important. We all enjoyed the comforts of a great Mountains holiday."

  • "Our group of eleven had a wonderful girls' weekend away here. This house exudes old style charm, but is also beautifully maintained, with all the modern comforts. The large and fully equipped kitchen allowed us to cook some great meals, and the roaring fireplace ended up being a popular spot on those chilly Blue Mountains nights! We would definitely consider coming here again."
