Kallarroo offers a very special, away-from-it-all holiday: a grand homestead done up in rustic elegance on a 1000 acre mountain grazing property in the unspoilt Kydra Ranges of southeast NSW.
You can be among artwork, antiques, and open fireplaces gazing down on the Kydra River valley, enjoying rural comfort in the great tradition of Australian country life.
Or you can be bush-walking through pasture and old-growth forest, canoeing on the river, finding the hollow-tree cubby house, or playing croquet on the huge front lawn.
Kallarroo is situated near the historic village of Nimmitabel, roughly half way between the ski-fields and fishing spots of the Snowy Mountains, and the pristine beaches of the NSW far south coast. It is two hours' drive from Canberra, 45 minutes from Cooma, and about an hour and a quarter from either Merimbula or Jindabyne. (Click on MAP for orientation.)
The Homestead is a very large log and stone house with rooms of immense proportions, overlooking three kilometres of frontage on the Kydra River.
The Homestead is one of the most exceptional in the Monaro, the high country region between the Snowies and the coast.
It features three open fireplaces, a spacious loungeroom, an elegant dining room, a big country kitchen, three bedrooms, a study, two bathrooms, and a television room.
Kallarroo Homestead was built with big public rooms for country-style entertaining. The living room features a baby grand piano, Canadian landscape art, rich Persian carpets and Ottomans, and a grand open fireplace.
The dining room includes a massive English Tudor dining table, an open fire, antique sideboards, and a collection of bright naive art from overseas and Aboriginal paintings.
Alternatively, there's the gazebo - a glasshouse where you can enjoy a drink, lunch or dinner almost all year round with the feeling of being right outdoors.
The Homestead, while retaining a distinct rustic style, has been extensively renovated and offers all modern conveniences.
It originated as a family country residence, and retains a bit of family history and international tastes on the walls and in the decor.
Kallarroo Homestead is available as self-catering holiday accommodation, for up to nine people. The minimum stay is two nights on the weekend and three nights during the week, and stays of a week or more attract substantial discounts.
Covering 1000 acres of mixed farmland and native forest, Kallarroo offers a rich variety of opportunities for a casual stroll or a serious bushwalk.
Several trails run through the property, with maps provided on where to go to see the best of the scenery and animals.
It's the luck of the game with wild animals, but with any chance visitors should be able over a couple of days to see the platypus family who live and play in the creek.
There are cute echidnas - the spiny anteaters, to be seen here and there.
The birds include a range of colourful parrot species.
Then there are untold numbers of wombats, kangaroos, and wallabies, plus the paying residents, of course - sheep and cattle.
In addition to the Homestead, Kallarroo offers the Cottage, suitable for smaller parties of guests, up to six.
The Cottage is done up in the fashion of a ski or fishing lodge. It has an open fireplace in the living room, a kitchen/dining room with a tall wood panel cieling, and a range of artifacts making for the feel of a log cabin lodge but with all modern conveniences.
