Ooi House and separate Chalet are architectural award winning design by Kerry Hill and originally built to be part of an Aman Resort. This totally distinctive house offers complete luxury, outstanding design and prime location with ocean and river views from the 8 acre property, including an olive grove with 100 trees.
Situated on the banks of Margaret river one mile from the main beach, this beach house spares no luxuries and offers holiday makers something special. The house offers 3 King beds with ensuite bathrooms, the master bedroom has 20' ceilings and large flatscreen TV, with views out to the ocean and ridge over the river. The chalet offers one king bed and can be considered the 4th bedroom (great for a teenage getaway or couple) and is fully equipped. The house has an internal courtyard with koi pond and a moving wall of glass doors to the living area which has sliding glass doors on 4 sides giving access to the large deck.
The house is not suitable for young children due to the open central courtyard with koi pond and high deck. (2 extra children could be accommodated by arrangement.)
The minimalist design with open pavilion living area and cantilevered roof make the landscape a part of the internal environment.
The beautifully designed rammed earth bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms are separated from the living area by the sunken TV/Library lounge, inner courtyard and a long rammed earth hallway with floor to ceiling glass at each end viewing the ocean to the west and the olive grove to the east.
A office space sits between the 3 bedrooms.
The 8 acre property offers complete privacy, the house is a designed for maximum peace and uncluttered beauty and has been furnished for comfort and luxury.
The area is prime location and Ooi House is a totally unique architectural work of art.
Please note: the chalet has air conditioning but the house is designed to utilize the sea breeze to cool the living area. The house is open to the ocean with glass doors opening on all sides and the central pond has a glass wall which opens to allow the breeze to be cooled by the pond before entering the pavilion living area. The rammed earth section at the back has 12" walls so all the bedrooms are naturally cool. Cooling electric fans are also supplied.
The outside Vental Blinds are permanently set to allow access through the many glass doors on 4 sides of the living area and down but open over each glass panel allowing a clear view of the landscape but cutting out some light. They cannot be adjusted.
Built on the banks of WA’s Margaret River, the Ooi house is a single-storey, three bedroom holiday residence with a guest chalet intended to be the first of several. These relate to courtyards, pools and decks. Because the semi-rural site is not overlooked by other properties, the design of both houses promotes transparency and openness. Materials (stabilised earth walls, tallowood floors and screens, steel roofing, glass) have been chosen to relate to the natural context and local trade practices. The plan divides the main house into two zones: a steel and glass living wing with a skillion roof, and a private wing, made with earth walls under a pitched roof, of two bedroom suites linked by a courtyard. The chalet is built of similar materials.
Jury Verdict
A house at peace with the landscape and the horizon. A house of details, although every junction and element has been thoughtfully and carefully resolved to a high level of consistency. There is a continual delight and surprise as one moves from space to space. While its rammed earth walls and the giant kauri locate it firmly as part of the south west of Western Australia, the calm refinement and elements such as screens and reflecting pool impart an Asian sensibility. This is a house of great serenity. It acknowledges its exceptional site, directing views towards the river, bush hillside and the ocean. It also sits in dramatic contrast to its environment, a light pavilion anchored by its rammed earth spines. This house resurrects some of the fading traditions of Australian domestic architecture, giving them an added sophistication and sensitivity which results in empathy of form, space and texture with the landscape. It belongs to the school of seductive architecture.
The use of pavillions seperated by a spine of circulation is evidenced in the project by Kerry Hill Architects. The house utilises the local use of rammed-earth with the bedroom pavillion surrounded thereby presenting an almost solid barrier to the cold south-westerly winds. Its ridged roof is lifted above the rammed earth walls, seperated by timber strips. Courtyards have been inserted into the house to provide sheltered outdoor sitting areas and to act as sun traps in winter. The living room is contained by a full glazed wall, with the roof lifted in a mono-pitched to the north, thereby maximising the exposure of the room to the north sun and the spectactular all-round views. Part of the house is anchored into the slope but the living room, with its lifted roof, is elevated over the site, emphasising its transparent lightness. The plan of the house is rectilinear and uses a great amount of full-height glazing. There are two distinct zones within the buildings, that of the sleeping zones made out of thick rammed earth and living areas such as dining/linving spaces are made out of light steel structures and transparent walls.
