Destination guide

A beachy resort that's held onto its old-world charm

One of the oldest towns in South Australia, Robe was founded in 1846 and named after its governor, Frederick Holt Robe, a colonial leader who was incredibly unpopular but – lucky you – managed to establish a port that went on to be much better liked than he was. It spent a few years as a gold rush town in the 19th century before settling into its current identity as a sunny home for Robe vacation rentals, and the sunbathers, surfers and lobster connoisseurs who love to come here.

Things to do

Shipwrecks of the past and lighthouses of the future

The history of this coastal village is on display at the Robe Customs House, built in 1863 and now housing the maritime museum. Exhibits tell the story of everyday life of early settlers in the area, gold fever, Chinese migration and the many shipwrecks off the coast. Contemporary fishermen don't have to worry about crashing anymore, thanks to the Robe Lighthouse, a draw for travellers who appreciate modern construction. It was built in 1973 and consists of a striking, star-shaped column with the latest electronic optical equipment.

Activities

Dramatic shoreline make for a surfer's paradise

Robe's rocky shore, part of Australia's Limestone Coast, is home to a few lovely and secluded beaches, including the 17-kilometre-long Long Beach, which attracts newbie surfers and the more die-hard variety, especially during the National Kite Surfing Championships and the Robe Surfing Classic. You don't have to balance on a board to enjoy the outdoors, though. Off-roading, fishing, bushwalking and camping are all popular pastimes. For a tiny port town, Robe has a rather charming and sophisticated town centre with a smattering of historic sites and cute shops.

Weather

You won't need your warmest robe in Robe

The Mediterranean climate in Robe is perfect for those who like things breezy and mild. Summer highs rarely creep into the upper 20s, and ocean breezes make walking, hiking and camping a pleasure. Winter lows rarely dip below 8°C, so you won't have to pack your puffy winter coat. Robe vacation rentals are most popular in the warmest months, so if you're looking to score a deal or just want to have the town all to yourself, try planning for a winter trip.

Natural highlights

Ocean views, lakeside strolls, fins and feathers

Surfers and history buffs love Robe, but it's the nature lovers in your party who may just have found their soul mate. Just south of town is Little Dip Conservation Park, a protected area of lakes, beaches and headlands. Walking paths take you past Fresh Water Lake, Big Dip Lake and Lake Eliza, and you might see sandpipers and parrots along the way. Robe vacation rentals are an ideal home base for a fishing trip, too. Salmon, snapper, King George whiting and mullet are just a few of the species that might be in your boat by end of day.
