Fun in the sun: say hello to Hawaii and marvellous Maui

Spend your days dreaming of that island getaway? Well pack your bags – paradise and perfection await you in Maui. Explore every facet of the Hawaiian coastline, from its world-famous sandy beaches to its majestic cliffs. Frolic under sunny skies as you swim, surf and sunbathe the day away. If you prefer your adventures on land, hike through the island's lush green valleys dotted with rainforests, volcanoes and waterfalls. Maui vacation rentals place you near the numerous villages sprinkled across the island, many of which feature cosy spas, shops and restaurants.

Things to do

Haleakala – you couldn't lava more if you tried

Maui's own Haleakala National Park is no ordinary walk in the park – the untouched region is home to Haleakala, a 3,055-metre volcano and the island's highest peak. Hike to the rim of the crater or explore the base of the volcano dotted with cinder cones and old lava flows. If you're staying in a Maui vacation rental with kids, they'll love a trip to the Maui Ocean Center, an aquarium with interactive exhibits, including a touch tank tide pool. Maui Tropical Plantation is an active farm where tram tours offer insight into how farmers grow sugarcane and pineapples.

Activities

Come on in – the water's fine and plenty of fun!

Life's a day at the beach in Maui, where the Pacific Ocean provides excellent conditions for surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, swimming, snorkelling, kiteboarding and paddle boarding. If you prefer your thrills on land, hike your way across the Iao Valley before cooling off in a swimming hole, or drive across the famed Hana Highway, where hairpin turns include breathtaking vistas of rainforests, waterfalls and beaches. Quaint island villages offer laid-back living in the form of boutique shops and galleries, while high-end experiences across the island include elite golf courses, spas and gourmet restaurants.

Weather

Soak up the sunshine in magnificent Maui

There's one constant when it comes to the weather in Maui – it's pretty much always spectacular. The island enjoys mild temperatures and sunshine throughout the year, including during the winter, when highs typically top out around 23 degrees Celsius. August and September are usually the hottest months of the year, as temperatures climb to the low 30s, but even then, you'll get relief from ocean breezes. Rain is common year-round, but downpours are rare. Keep in mind, Maui vacation rentals fill up quickly from mid-December through mid-April, the island's high season for travellers, so book early.

Natural highlights

How green was my valley – rainforests reign supreme

Maui's most famed natural setting are its beaches, where crystal blue waters crash on white sand beaches and rocky outcrops. There's even more beauty under the sea, including the partially submerged Molokini crater, where snorkellers and divers swim alongside colourful fish. Back on land, the Iao Valley is covered in rainforests, while the majestic West Maui Mountains serve as dramatic backdrops for sprawling farms and ranches. Haleakala National Park is famously home to endangered Hawaiian geese, while migrating humpback whales swim off the coast from December through May. Enjoy stunning sunrise and sunset views from elevated spots in Halekala.
