From Heathrow you're better off catching the tube (Piccadilly Line to Hammersmith, across the platform to the District Line straight to Barking. It's £2.90 off peak!)

From Gatwick you need to catch the train to London Bridge. Don't get the Express, it's just as quick and cheaper to get the ordinary train. Then jump on the Jubilee Line and change at West Ham for four stops on the District Line.

For all Tube journeys be sure to buy an Oyster card as it's much cheaper than cash fares. Pay as you go is fine for a few days plus you won't get charged more than a full day travelcard in any case.
