About Robyn Waller & Matt Burch
We (my husband Matt and I) currently live in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. I am a solicitor and my husband is an ex-Royal Navy meteorologist who now works with the UAE Navy. We met at university in Exeter about 20 years ago and have been able to do more than our fair share of travelling ever since. We were married in Sri Lanka four years ago, surrounded by our loved ones and the sound of the ocean waves. I love the sunshine and a warm climate; Matt loves to go hiking in the hills. I love gardening and have a big soft spot for herbs, lavender and climbing plants. I have always wanted an orchard. Matt wants to grow raspberries. I love cats. Matt dreams of the day he has the time and space to own a dog. We both like wine and cheese a bit too much. We love our holidays and are drawn to hide-aways with a lot of character and great food! A couple of years ago, having spent quite a bit of time in France, we started to seriously consider making a little bit of it our own. That's how we came to buy Las Mothes, as a holiday home for now and later as a retirement home.
Robyn Waller & Matt Burch purchased this Farmhouse in 2019
Why Robyn Waller & Matt Burch chose Beaumont-de-Lomagne
We fell in love with Las Mothes for its breath taking views and idyllic setting in the rolling Lomagne countryside. As you round the corner of the road, you can see a cheerful yellow home with a wobbly terracotta roof nestled in between three hills and surrounded by fields, as far as the eye can see. It always brings a smile to our faces. Las Mothes (pronounced Les Mottes) means clump of dirt or clod. It is named after the clay hills on which it stands and from which it was built. The house was built as a farmhouse in the traditional regional style and method, over 150 years ago. The thick walls are made from clay mud bricks, baked hard in the sun and layered around a foraged timber frame. It originally would have consisted of a central ground floor dwelling with stables in the eves at either side. The second floor (now the main bedroom) was originally the hay loft. The property has been gradually modernised by a series of owners and I love that you can see how it has been loved and cared for over the years, including by its last owner Martin Lewis. Inside, it is a light filled home that has a wonderful feel to it. It's been sympathetically modernised and just enough touches of the original beams and high barn ceilings remain to give it character. It's designed for an inside / outside lifestyle – you're never many metres from a door to the garden. The house is surrounded on all sides by the garden and its views. We wanted to be close to a major city and where better than Toulouse? It is a stunning city with its pink buildings and blue shutters, café culture, youthful vibrance and boutique shops.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
You will be staying in a property that we consider to be our home, and a much loved one at that. We've tried to make it comfortable for ourselves and also for elderly relatives, fun loving friends and our six nieces and nephews. This means that Las Mothes isn't just a holiday home, furnished with the bare essentials for holiday lets but a real 'home from home'. You feel that you are in a private rural idyll in the middle of the countryside but you're only five minutes' drive from Beaumont de Lomagne and all its facilities. It is quiet and safe without being remote. The property makes a perfect retreat, all year round. It's ideal for lazy pool days in the summer and cozy and warm in the winter. Take time to stay up and look at the night sky. The blanket of stars is just amazing!

Relaxing idyllic spot - great family holiday with pool!
This beautiful house was in an idyllic setting perfect for our family holiday with young children including a 4 month old! We enjoyed the pool and the evening bbqs! Area is very quiet but the animaparc and saint clar lake were definitely worth a visit! The lady looking after the house was great at popping in and cleaning the pool and offering advice!! Thanks for a great holiday!
A beautiful house in a stunning location.
We enjoyed a relaxing two weeks at the beautiful Las Mothes. We holidayed as two families with 4 boys and the spacious house provided everything we could need, lazy days by the pool, evenings on the terrace, an array of wildlife and a great location to explore the area. Martin and Vania were really helpful and made everything run smoothly. A truly lovely place to stay.
We enjoyed a lovely week at Las Mothes. The location and surrounding area was stunning. The house did not disappoint and we would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a peaceful and tranquil time away.
I am delighted you enjoyed your time at Las Mothes!
Magical Las Mothes
A breathtaking approach to the most exquisite, comfortable and delightful modern French farmhouse. 360 degree stunning views of the French terrain and within close driving distance to the Midi-Pyrenees. We were blown away by the exquisite villages. We couldn't keep our cameras away. The pool at the house was so refreshing after a morning relaxing in the sunshine. We always felt so comfortable and content at the house. We even had all the tools and utensils to make a delishious birthday cake. Morning runs up the 300m driveway, and through the parted wheat were thoroughly enjoyed. The house comfortably fits 10 people. We had a party of 7 and had more than enough room. We would highly recommend this home if your objective is to relax and to explore countless villages nearby with the most friendly locals, enticing markets and taste the magnificent French cuisine this is the perfect farmhouse for you.
I am so glad you all enjoyed yourselves at Las Mothes!
Great rural retreat to relax with family around a pool
Lovely rustic setting in rolling countryside. A true opportunity to unwind and escape everyday stress. We had a very happy week by the pool and venturing into the town for BBQ supplies. Even when the weather turned for the last couple of days the kids had sky tv and WiFi to keep them occupied indoors.
So pleased you enjoyed your time at Las Mothes.
Heaven on Earth, better than we'd ever imagined!
First of all let's set the scene, the property is located in the most picturesque location amongst the rolling hills outside of Beaumont de Lomagne, it's been our favourite region as has neighbouring Gers for some years so we know what we're looking for in a property and its location.
The description of the property is spot on, in fact the property is better than we'd expected, fully equipped with everything a family would need for a stress free stay. The property is clean, loved and clearly cared for by someone who cares, all the equipment worked faultlessly and it has all the facilities you need, it was a home from home, BUT BETTER! The well equipped modern (but characterful) kitchen is the heart of the house which is where we found ourselves most of the time, apart from when being out on the patio or in the pool.
The house is only 3 miles from the centre of Beaumont so nice and close to buy your baquettes and croissants each morning, we visited several markets in surrounding villages, explored the countryside and even made it to a couple of restaurants, one that Martin hasn't even visited yet but we can highly recommend.
Martin has prepared a folder which is a comprehensive guide to the house and its surroundings, including advice on where to visit, the markets, shops, restaurants, pretty villages, stunning scenery etc. The customer service is second to none, not that we had any issues, the local (English) caretaker lives less than a mile away and was there to greet us, talk us through where everything was and how it all worked, paid us a visit mid way then came to see us off at the end, we just couldn't fault this place in any way, it is quite simply Heaven on Earth.
Would we recommend it to anyone else? That's a tricky one, as long as they don't want the same week as we'd like as we'll most definitely be back, and next time we're staying for TWO weeks. Our entire family loved it and we're already planning our next visit.
Thank you Martin and family for such a memorable stay in the best holiday rental we've stayed in and in the most spectacular of locations.
Thanks so much for your comments, Bryn, we are so pleased you enjoyed it!
LOCATED IN BEAUMONT DE LOMAGNE
Beaumont de Lomagne is a charming agricultural town with real character - it isn't a tourist town like some with many tourist restaurants.
The Café du Sports is where the local folk gather and there is a wonderful market on Saturdays featuring local producers.
There is also a small cave des vins although most types of alcohol including a large range of French wines are available in both the supermarkets.
The Base de Loisirs in Beaumont has mini-golf, golf clinic, tennis, petanque and water sports including sailing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, pedal boat). There are three pools and two waterslides.
There are two supermarkets in Beaumont de Lomagne, each no more than 5 minutes drive from the house.
Lectoure and St Clar are examples of charming medieval towns and can be visited in one day as St Clar is en route to Lectoure. Friday is market day in Lectoure so that's a good day to do both!
Marciac is another charming market town with a market on Sunday mornings. It's about a 30 minute drive along country roads.
Montauban is an interesting, arty town both for shopping and visiting cultural attractions. The city's favourite son, the artist Ingres, created the artistic community and this continues today. It's a pleasant, 40 minute drive among vineyards and fruit-growing areas and offers quirky shopping as well as the Ingres Museum. The 'artiness' is reflected in some of the street murals.
ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN
There are two other superb leisure areas within a 15 minute drive at St Clar and St Sardos, both with superb pools and water-based activities. At St Nicholas de la Grave there is a huge water sports leisure park where the Garonne widens to form a natural basin.
For younger children there are attractions such as the Ferme Pedagogique St Martin, the Agrip Aventure (a zip-wire in the trees experience); the Animaparc near Grenade 20 minutes away or the Parc Animalier at St Clar.
