There are not enough words to describe how sublime Crabtree Barn is We stayed here for 10 nights; the beds were comfortable, the kitchen and laundry fully stocked with everything you could need to cook or clean with and the outlook breathtaking! We had a ball interacting with the neighbour's dogs and horses, had fabulous meals outside in the garden and spent some time in the conservatory absorbing the peace and birdsong. If ever we were to return to this end of the world again, we would stay here in a heartbeat

Restful Retreat

Four adults ages 49-80 and it was perfect for all of us. Clean, comfortable, quiet bedrooms. Steaming hot water and great water pressure in the showers. Kitchen well equipped. Comfortable living area with great views. We enjoyed watching the sheep migrate from field to field. Short, beautiful drive down into the Peak District.

Wow!

Crabtree Barn is exactly, if not better, than what kind owners Wayne and Rachel say/show it is. Their renovated barn was perfect for my partner and 2 kids. Not only was it a beautiful home with all of the amenities and then some, the English countryside is simply gorgeous and peaceful. AND I have to say, I have never met owners who were as kind or as helpful as both Wayne and Rachel (and I have stayed in a good number of VRBOs!!) If you love what you see then you will not be disappointed-- Definitely stay here!

Beautiful and comfortable home base for a family stay!My husband, 16 year old son, and I stayed for 4 nights, and can't wait to come back again. The beauty of the barn and the landscape is difficult to capture in photos. We were amazed at how much lovelier the place was than even the beautiful photos in the listing. Rachel and Wayne are wonderful hosts. They are friendly and great communicators, and also have written out nearly everything anyone who is staying here would want / need to know. Check-in / check-out was very smooth and easy. The upstairs living area with the kitchen and dining area is a great hang-out space for the family. (The kitchen had everything we needed.) The first level bedrooms allow for space to spread out when needed as well. The terraced garden area was peaceful and gorgeous in the evenings. The game room was a fantastic bonus with the ping-pong table as well. The Crabtree Barn was everything that we hoped it would be and more. Can't wait to go back!

Cosy tucked away barn

Crabtree Barn is cosy though spacious and comes very well equipped. It was wonderfully clean and the beds and sofas were extremely comfortable. The kitchen is well designed with plenty of space and all the equipment we needed. Wayne and Rachel were very helpful and friendly without being at all intrusive. My sister and I felt happy and warm and relaxed in the Barn and would visit again and recommend it to friends. Just beware of the very narrow roads leading to the Barn and which make up much of the road network in the area - we loved driving them, but they aren't for everyone. What a wonderful base from which to explore Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Hardcastle Craggs and Haworth and discover a very striking part of the world. Thank you Wayne and Rachel!

About the host

Hosted by Wayne Harris and Rachel Taylor

Host profile image
Wayne was a teacher for 25 years but now runs a holiday property and is Dad to teenager Henry. Wife Rachel runs the local community magazines so knows all the local restaurants and what's on info. Son Henry is 15 and loves martial arts!

Why they chose this property

Stylish, modern but with features of the barn retained, totally renovated in 2014. We love the area and live in the area ourselves. Away from the hustle and bustle of modern life but so easy to get around. The barn is tucked down a little country lane but in only 10 minutes you can reach the M62 and can easily be in Leeds, Manchester, York etc. Hebden Bridge is just 30 mins and Haworth (Bronte sisters) is 45 minutes drive away. The Peak District is a 90 minute drive to the South. It's the best of all worlds! Explore the city by day and return to the peaceful haven of the barn in the evening.

What makes this property unique

Set in rolling hills with far reaching views, the barn was built in 1855 and converted in 2000. It is very spacious, over twice the size of many 2 bedded holiday cottages with a large private garden. Quirky architecture in how the barn entrance has been retained and incorporated into the huge front and velux windows meaning the living area is full of light.

You can drive or take the train to Leeds and Manchester in under an hour from Slaithwaite station whilst local areas of Calderdale and Kirklees have many buildings, parks and cultural points of interest. Set in area that 'Gentleman Jack' lived and where Happy Valley was filmed. A 5 mile / 15 min drive away is the Piece Hall ('Italian Piazza? no Halifax!' Daily Mail Sep 19) with big name concerts each summer - in 2025 there is Gary Barlow, The Corrs, Rag n Bone Man, Busted, Texas, Travis, the Saw Doctors plus others! Within a 15 - 20 minutes drive (5-6 miles) there are over 20 pubs and restaurants to choose from.
