Situated in the heart of Lisbon’s most characteristic Old Quarter, just 100 metres from the renowned Fado Museum, this modern 1 bedroom apartment at Alfama is located on the 1st floor of a building totally refurbished in 2012. Tastefully decorated, the apartment can comfortably accommodate 4 guests.
Please pay attention that the stairs are steep. However, from the ground floor to our apartment (on the 1st floor, as we say in Portugal!) you have to go through only 1 flight of stairs with16 steps and 2 hand rails, one each side.
• LCD TV, some 200 national and international cable channels, free wireless internet.
• Bedroom with 1 double bed and 1 double sofa bed in the living room. Dining table with 4 seats.
• Kitchen fully equipped with smoke extractor, hob and oven, cooking utensils, washing machine, hot water cylinder, fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster, nespresso coffee machine, hair dryer, iron and board.
Alfama is the oldest and most traditional of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods. Its existence can be traced back to the period of Moorish domination from the 8th century onwards. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths and referring to the numerous water sources that used to exist and feed various fountains. It spreads along the south east slope that descends from the mediaeval São Jorge Castle all the way down to the Tagus River.
In just 10 minutes walking from the apartment you are able to find some of the most important tourist sites and monuments that Lisbon has to offer. These include Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa (Lisbon’s Cathedral and oldest church dating back to 1147 and also seat of the Archdiocese), the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora which is a 17th century mannerist styled masterpiece, the National Pantheon (where some of Portugal’s most important historical characters are buried) or the National Fado Museum. Other notable places of interest are Casa dos Bicos (famous for its gothic architecture from the 16th century and Literature Nobel Prize winner José Saramago’s Foundation Headquarters), Praça do Comércio or Terreiro do Paço (the royal residence from the 16th until the 18th century) or the flea market known as Feira da Ladra or 'Thieves' Market'.
Alfama is also one of the old neighbourhoods where Fado runs through the blood of its people. As the purest expression of the soul and the feelings of the Portuguese people, Fado can and should be enjoyed in the many restaurants and bars everywhere or simply heard through an open window in a private house.
There are several ways to discover the secrets of Alfama. Walking calmly through its picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares or taking a ride on the famous number 28 tram are two of the most enjoyable. And the breathtaking views from both Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol viewpoints overlooking Lisbon and Tagus river should not be missed.
Today, Alfama is a vibrant neighbourhood with its recovered architectural heritage that combines history with a cosmopolitan feel, offering a variety of restaurants, bars and craft shops that will delight those who visit us.
Welcome to Alfama.
