"The setting is magical! Falling asleep to the sound of the river was a real treat!”
You’ll stay in a unique riverside Eco-Home designed and built by the hosts, Rachel and Tom, with natural material techniques. It is the perfect choice if you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday immersed in nature, at easy reach of the Mourne Mountains and Strangford Lough, in all seasons.
The lofty living-dining-kitchen open space with its wood burning stove and wide views on the surrounding landscape will give you a very warm and cozy feeling. Our guests love to do lots home cooking in the well equipped open plan kitchen and enjoy dining and chilling-out on the sheltered terrace whilst listening to the sound of the river and the birds.
Kids will find lots of entertainment in the surrounding garden, safely fenced, with its own lawn looking on to the hosts vegetable garden and fruit trees. They are also welcome to use games and toys they can find in the cottage. The guests are able to access the river but the garden is fenced for the safety of the kids.
There are friendly bars a couple of miles away and the Mourne Mountains and the sea are only half an hour drive.
Our many returning guests tell us they feel at home each time they come back and particularly enjoy the welcoming and warm vibe of the house and garden. They also like how spacious it is, the relaxed relationship to the outside spaces, the good level access shower and the steady temperature of the underfloor heating supplemented by the wood burning stove.
As hosts, we have been living in the cottage for few months over the winter and now appreciate from our own experience the qualities and comfort of living in the cottage. We have improved the second bedroom with twin beds, replaced some garden furniture and added a barbecue.

This is a wonderful and characterful place to stay. The hosts are so welcoming and friendly and were glad to chat about the fascinating eco-construction of the cottage if you are interested. Lot's to do and see in the area

Thanks so much Stan. It was great to meet you both.
Glad you were interested in the eco aspect and the sea chart of Strangford Lough.
For anyone looking at this review, our cottage is also called Hemp Cottage, because the walls are made of cast Hempcrete.
Beautiful, very well appointed and comfortable cottage in a really lovely and secluded location. But Strangford Lough is in easy cycling reach, Belfast is pretty close (cyclists can take the greenway from Comber), there are very friendly bars a couple of miles away and the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea half an hours drive down the road. Or you can just sit around drinking excellent gin from the local distillery, watching the dippers in the river and absorbing the peace. Enjoy!
Very pleasant stay in a very comfortable cottage by the river. Well equipped with everything we needed.

About the host
Hosted by Rachel Bevan
We are both Architects interested in Sustainability and built the cottage in our 1 acre garden, adjacent to our converted water-mill, to demonstrate " Hemp-Lime" construction as well as other sustainable low-impact features. We've enjoyed hosting visitors since 2010 and have been listed as one of the top 10 eco places to stay by the Guardian newspaper.
What makes this property unique
Has many of the benefits of "glamping" but is much more spacious. Visitors are impressed by how natural & relaxed it feels.
