About Carolyn Crowley
I grew up in Washington, D.C., Detroit, and Ireland. My family went to Ireland because American doctors could not diagnose what was wrong with my sick father. My mother thought we should move there so he could die in Ireland. But a country Irish doctor, just by feeling my father's skin, knew he had pernicious anemia. My father lived to age 91, many of his years spent in Windswept, our main Nantucket house, next-door to In the Lee. I have two degrees from Boston University: BA in English Literature and a MA in English Education. I taught fourth grade at an international school in Nagoya, Japan, and then English as a Second Language (ESL) in Japan (1968-1970), before becoming a reporter for the Mainichi Daily News in Osaka. I then volunteered with the Peace Corps in Fes, Morocco, the cultural capital, teaching nutrition and ESL (1972-1974). Back in the States, I taught fourth grade on Long Island, seventh/eighth grade English in Baltimore and, substitute taught in Boston. My favorite of all my jobs: I wrote newspaper and magazine stories 1980-2011 in Washington, D.C., and traveled the world getting my information. I moved to Nantucket September 2011. My husband and I have a Dobermans we love and pamper. He is friendly to all people and dogs. Like my parents and our tenants, I love Windswept and In the Lee. They lack nothing and are as comfortable as a home should be.

Why Carolyn Crowley chose Nantucket Town
My mother immediately fell in love with this property on her first visit to it in 1965. My father, however, wanted to live on the 'Sconset Bluff. Thankfully Mom won. They both loved Nantucket and our acre on a hill in Nantucket Town with its grand views of the Old Mill and Town so much that they moved permanently to the Island when Dad retired at age 70 as a Boston Globe editorial writer.
What makes this House unique
In the Lee is close to several beaches and to downtown Nantucket, where tenants will want to shop, dine, attend theatrical performances and movies. It seems as if all our guests walk downtown each evening to the Juice Bar to get ice cream cones. Because of its height on one of Nantucket's highest points, In the Lee enjoys delightful summertime breezes throughout the day and night. Guests relax, read, converse with each other, and eat in the backyard, which has a charcoal grill, Adirondack chairs, chaise lounges, and a picnic table and teak chairs. Guests enjoy privacy at In the Lee because the house, the two-car off-street parking area and backyard are not seen from the street.

Great place to stay on Nantucket
My wife and I stayed at In the Lee for an extended weekend trip to Nantucket. In the Lee was a great place to stay. The house was clean, comfortable, private, and had all the amenities we needed, and more. The location was great for us, as it is a short walk to town, but also a great place to launch for bike trips to different parts of the island. Overall, we had a great trip on Nantucket and wouldn't hesitate staying at In the Lee again or recommending it to family or friends.
Perfect anniversary getaway
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at In the Lee and enjoyed everything that the cottage--and the island--had to offer. When we arrived, Carolyn greeted us with a smile and all the information we could need to have a wonderful stay. The cottage is well-equipped, comfortable, and conveniently-located. We walked into town each morning and we were a short drive from Surfside beach (our favorite). We hope to make it back next year!
Great place to stay
After a 10 day stay at the Lee I am sad to leave! This is an amazing place with a great location in the center of town. The décor is lovely and made me feel comfortable and at home throughout my stay. I was here for work and Carolyn made me feel right at home. She was attentive and made my time off from work enjoyable and stress free. I have stayed at many Island B&B's and homes and would prefer going back to the Lee above any others. Location and peacefulness as well as the view and attention to guest service were second to none. Looking forward to returning soon!
I loved staying here. The location is wonderful, the property is so much fun and the property manager is very helpful. The outdoor shower and patio area are amazing. The property manager leaves everything you could ever need- lunch box, ice packs, maps, guides, crockpot, the list goes on and on!
Perfect cottage for our get away.
The cottage is just a quick walk to town. Beautifully decorated. Very comfortable.
Just what we needed for a place to lay our heads and hit the island for a few days. Quiet and secluded and loved the positioning by the old Widmill
