About the host
Hosted by Helen Scott
We have enjoyed family holidays in Carteret since buying the apartment in 2004. It has provided us with lovely memories of days with our children on the beach, at the food markets, dining out at wonderful restaurants and cafes - and of course relaxing at the apartment with a great bottle of wine!
Why they chose this property
The apartment is in a prime location within easy walking distance of Carteret's attractive High Street, bustling waterfront and beautiful sandy beaches. You can choose whether to relax and not go far during your stay - or use it as a base to explore La Manche area of Normandy and its rich history. La Manche stretches from Mont St Michel to the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula, with picturesque seaside towns and gorgeous scenery to enjoy along the way. It has a fascinating maritime heritage and many remnants from D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. Key places we have visited during our own trips to Carteret include:
Bayeux, worth visiting for its rich history, including the world-famous Bayeux Tapestry and its charming medieval streets filled with captivating architecture and local culture; Mont St Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well worth a day trip; Granville, the birthplace of Christian Dior with an interesting museum and gardens to visit there; Cherbourg with its incredible Cite de la Mer, including the largest submarine open to the public to visit in the world; The Landing Beaches and associated museums/visitor centres.
Of course, pottering about Carteret itself and nearby market towns of Barneville and Portbail can be every bit as enjoyable as big day trips!
For English visitors, the apartment is just 30 minutes' drive from Cherbourg, so getting there and back is very straightforward.

What makes this property unique
What makes our property truly special is the perfect blend of relaxation and access to local natural beauty and culinary delights, within walking distance. Carteret beach here is particularly ideal for families, offering shallow waters where children can safely play, build sandcastles, or splash around. You’ll also find delicious ice creams and freshly made waffles right by the water's edge, making it a perfect treat after a fun-filled day by the sea.
For nature lovers, the surroundings are a dream. Take a leisurely walk along Le Cap, a nearby cliff with breathtaking views of the coastline, or explore the picturesque countryside that stretches out just beyond the village. The hiking and cycling paths around Carteret offer scenic routes where you can immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of Normandy’s landscape.
We also have a special place in our hearts for the Michelin-starred Marine restaurant nearby. For a memorable holiday dining experience, it’s hard to beat—whether you’re enjoying a romantic evening or treating yourselves with friends, the exquisite menu and stunning views across the estuary make it a standout choice.
In short, our property offers the best of both worlds: a serene, family-friendly retreat with easy access to natural wonders and unforgettable culinary experiences, all within easy reach.
