The Neighborhood:
Camden is one of London’s most iconic and distinctive areas. A huge player in the rock, punk and Britpop scenes of London’s last 40 years, this historic neighbourhood is known for being the stomping ground of many musicians, artists and writers. It’s not all about music, though: whether you’re looking for shopping, eating, or a great night out, Camden has it. Whether you’re a rocker, cool kid, metalhead, hippy, vintage queen or muso, you’ll find something to delight you in this fun part of North London!
The moment you step outside the tube station, Camden attacks the senses. Bass thumps from the market stalls' speakers, the scent of street food and incense permeates the air, and goths, punks, pushers and tourists shove past, giving the area an unorthodox charm. Camden Market has been one of the main draws of Camden for decades. Sprawled under arches and down cobbled alleyways, the market attracts those looking for alternative fashion, accessories, music and merchandise. There are over 1,000 shops, cafes and bars here – good luck getting round them all. You'll find food from around the globe at Camden's many eateries and street vendors. If you’re planning to catch a performance, the Roundhousehas a great pre-theatre menu. Check out Italian treats at Trufflesecco, Masala Zone’s delicious Indian dishes or pan-Asian cuisine at Gilgamesh, where you can stay on to enjoy the trendy bar and club.
London Zoo is just around the corner and you can actually catch sight of the giraffes from the canal, but it’s definitely worth paying to get in and see some of the world’s rarest animals up close.
Primrose Hill park used to be a place for duels, but these days it just goes quietly about its business as one of the best natural viewpoints in London. It’s surrounded by beautiful grand houses and they kindly keep the trees low so you can see across the city.
Getting Around:
You can stroll, ride, or sit along the canal. The Regent’s Canal towpath stretches from the depths of Paddington all the way east to Stratford. You can take a themed (or normal) narrowboat tour, a waterbus, Boris bike, or walk along it. Or grab some food from the market, and sit along the edge.
Getting there: Camden Town tube station is the most central, but on Sundays it’s exit only between 1pm and 5pm. Chalk Farm, Mornington Crescent or Kentish Town are all nearby for your return journey.
If you’re coming from out of town, its only a few stops on the Northern Line from both Euston and Kings Cross mainline stations.
It’s also fortunately one of London’s major bus hubs – most buses going north will pass through here.
