About this property

Pitsimenti-- that seaside cottage by Marathonisi islet

On the southern tip of Zakynthos island is a property quite unlike any other. Half-wild and gently healing, Marathias, known for its wild herbs and sulfur-spring fed magical waters, is one of the most beautiful places in the world. For freedom-lovers, adventure-seekers, and those who know in their bones that life is for enjoying, this is the perfect escape -- a cozy, bright cottage nestled among the enchanting sights, sounds, and fragrances of summer in Marathias. This is a place for experiences you’ll remember forever, from snorkeling from your front yard along mysterious rocky coves, exploring the sea-caves, and swimming in stars at midnight to encountering wildlife and feeling like a kid again as you wander among the wildflowers.

Here, in addition to having the best of the island curated and conveniently organized for you by your caring, knowledgeable hosts, you will experience our Californian family's ideal of indoor/ outdoor living, with a wraparound veranda which keeps the comfort of the stay directly connected to the wonders of the outdoors. Past guests rave about the beauty of the land, the ease, comfort, and sense of peacefulness they felt here, as well as the many cute and beautiful encounters they've had with all sorts of animals, from cats, lizards, swallows and falcons to turtles, seals, and even octopi.

Our home is unique in two ways: First, it is the only absolutely private waterfront estate available in the protected zone of the National Marine Park, and the closest house to Marathonisi Island! You have access to the rocky shores of Marathias and the sparkling waters of Laganas Bay from 4 sea access points around the land.

Second, my Grandparents were writers, thinkers and nature lovers. Because of the remoteness and size of their little nature reserve, you have your privacy even with the big windows all around, immersing you in nature 360 degrees, whether you are on the sea front veranda or having a luxurious bath. The cottage is light, airy, open-plan and cozy, with French doors and a wraparound porch that make the line between indoors and out disappear - you are in nature all the time.

Picture windows overlook the bay and glass walls in the rear look onto a path and garden. The bedroom is mostly glass with curtains, so it is not soundproof. There is a sofa bed in the living room and another on the veranda, for hot nights. 2 window seats in the living room offer places to recline during the day.

The land is wild and rambling, with steps down to the sea landing. Pines, cedars, wild olives and herbs, hidden spots that house hedgehogs or pine martens. Try watching sea life in the mornings and evenings.

The sea access points and other outdoor areas down towards the sea may have shared use with 1-2 guests from the other side of the land, depending on availability. If you'd like to book the entire property to have total privacy for your group in this stunning nature reserve, including the caravan with outdoor kitchen which can sleep 1-2 people and includes access to several additional outdoor areas on the other side of the land, please ask us for an offer on the dates you're interested in.

We are a family of artists, writers, plant people, animal people, and activists lovingly balancing creative freedom with community connectedness. We appreciate slow living and connecting with the nature-lovers who tend to choose this location. If you'd like to meet us, we'd be happy to share tea or a meal with you, whether on the land or elsewhere, and can happily share a great deal about the cultural background of Zakynthos and Greece in general, local legends and family mythology, the best places to go and things to do on this island, as well as helping you to plan or figure out anything you'd like to do or create here. Reach out, if you're interested and we'll gladly find a time to meet with you!

Why they chose this property

This land was chosen by my grandparents who were looking for a very beautiful escape from the mad rush of the world to settle down in for retirement. Their very high standards and years of searching with help from their network of connections from past travel around Greece ultimately led them to this location, which combined a low price tag (wild, overgrown waterfront property with no great farming possibilities had very little value before the proliferation of tourism in Zakynthos) with the most remarkable location imaginable.
