Melody House and Melody Cottage date back to the early 14th century, originally serving as Great Ryburgh’s Magnar Guild Hall under the Priory of Walsingham. Set beside the tranquil River Wensum and just 200 yards from the historic Saxon round-tower church, the property carries a remarkable sense of heritage and place.
Through the centuries it has survived fires, renovation, and even the era of the window tax, later evolving into a collection of charming cottages. For nearly 400 years it also hosted the village provision stores and small shops, making it a longstanding centre of local life. Today, pilgrims travelling the Walsingham Way are especially welcome, continuing a tradition of hospitality that spans generations.
Local folklore speaks of hidden priest’s stairs, possible underground passages, and the occasional unexplained sound in the night — gentle reminders of the building’s long and colourful past, adding a distinctive atmosphere to this historic Norfolk retreat.
