About this property

George Washington Town House in Old Town Alexandria - Walk to Everything!

In the heart of Old Town Alexandria sits the George Washington Town House. The house is a reproduction of the original town house, and sits on the original site. GW used the house, primarily before the Revolution, as an office and to spend the night when he was in Alexandria for business or social reasons (for more historical information, see below or search "George Washington townhouse Alexandria").

It is conveniently located in Old Town. It is a one block walk to King St. and a short walk to the waterfront, the museums, restaurants, shops (including Trader Joe’s and a CVS), public library, farmer’s market and City Hall. It is also walking distance to the King St. metro (there are also free shuttles running to the metro along King St. from the waterfront to the Metro station). Rates vary by season, and whether stay is weeknight or weekend. Stays of a week or longer are discounted, as are "last minute" bookings.

The town house is three levels (about 600 sq. ft. per level) with the 2 bedrooms on the top level, the living room and dining room (one large room) on the second (main) level, and the kitchen and family room with queen sleep sofa on the English basement level. There are two bathrooms, one with a bath and shower on the top level, and one with a shower only on the English basement level. The house features a large rear courtyard. At the rear of the lot is a large storage shed where the stable was. There are two parking spaces on the far side of the storage shed and off of “Washington Way” where GW would approach the property by horse.

When Alexandria was founded in 1749, the town ran up (west) from the river only as far as Royal Street. However, the town was doing so well by 1763 that several more blocks were added then. GW purchased this quarter-block lot (Lot 118) on May 9, 1763, for ten pounds, ten shillings. From 1769 to 1771, he had a plain dwelling, a stable, and other necessary buildings constructed here as sort of a town annex to Mount Vernon. The town house was the only house built by Washington for his own use. Prior to the Revolutionary War, he used it often when he was in Alexandria. During the war and his Presidency, the place was often rented or lent to friends and members of the family. Dr. William Brown rented the house for about ten years; Martha Washington’s favorite niece, Fanny Bassett Washington, lived here with her two boys for a little over a year in 1794-95; and Colonel Philip Marsteller, close friend of GW since Revolution, former Mayor of Alexandria and one of Washington’s pall bearers, lived here in 1797. A number of Washington’s letters refer to spending the night “at my own house.” Other letters order fencing for the property and give detailed directions for such things as repairing the fireplaces, laying a brick floor in the basement, papering the bedroom wall, and painting the exterior.

It is the first piece of property listed in Washington’s will, and it was the only piece of property that he left outright to his wife Martha when he died. At her death, Mrs. Washington left the property to her nephew, Bartholomew Dandridge. Unfortunately, the dwelling which had significantly deteriorated, was demolished in 1855. In 1960, Gov. and Mrs. Richard Lowe had the house reconstructed based on existing accounts - particularly a drawing done by a neighbor about the time of the demolition (copy at the house).
During the 1990s, the GW town house was rented to Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac while he operated "Fleetwood's" a blues club and restaurant in north Old Town.

Great Stay in Old Town

We lived in Old Town 10 years ago, so we’re familiar with the area. We chose this property based on the very convenient location and the historic aspect. The property listing is completely accurate, and there were no surprises. We loved the bottom level of the property for relaxing as a family. The courtyard is adorable, and we would have spent more time out there if the weather would have been warmer. We are very happy with our decision to stay here!

Home Away from Home

We had a great stay! This house was like stepping back in time…but with modern features. Just the right size for the three of us and our two Yorkies. Very comfortable and safe. We loved the courtyard out back and the location couldn’t have been better! Super communication with host!

Nice historical home

We enjoyed staying at the townhouse. It was so close we walked to dinner most evenings. Alexandria is such a nice place to walk around. Highly recommend the ghost and graveyard tour! They walk by the house and talk about it. We got to say we were staying there! Very fun.

Amazing

The house was exactly as described. The area was just what we wanted. Walked everywhere to some of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. 10-15 min to National Mall, Mount Vernon and Smithsonian Grandchildren loved all the sights and the ability to walk to Old Town. Tom was amazing answering any questions we had.

Even Better Than The Pictures, Plus A Perfect Location

My husband, 11-year-old, and I had a fantastic stay at the George Washington townhouse. Tom was an ideal host--responsive, thoughtful, and knowledgable. We had an issue one day we were there, and he showed up within minutes. The location in Old Town is perfect...although there's some street noise in the morning, so just be prepared to turn on some white noise. If you've wanted to stay in Old Town--and especially if you love history--you won't find anywhere better. We'd stay again in a heartbeat.

Loved It!

Location is perfect - there is a wine and beer shop right around the corner and a neighborhood bar called the Old Hat within walking distance. Old Town Waterfront is a seven minute walk. The home itself is like living in a museum. Recommend for couples. Uber to D.C. is a fifteen minute ride. All in all it was great fun and a kick to stay on George's old property.

Perfect location

What I would have liked to know before we stayed: the GW house does not have comfortable furnishings, the third bed was basically in the kitchen, the showers (and bathrooms were small), We had to buy dishwasher tablets, dish soap, laundry soap. Doors were very sticky/tricky. But history galore! If that’s what you are after!!

Great location, fun historical home

4.5 Stars. The house is conveniently located and very clean. Heat works well. Plenty of linens and love the historical aspect. There were a few minor maintenance issues though owner was very responsive. The main disappointment was that the bathtub is currently not able to be used- we have a small daughter who won't take showers, only baths, so that caused some problems. Also the kitchen was well-equipped with plates and glasses but not so much with even basic cooking utensils- we had to go buy a can opener (which we left, so now there is one.) However it was a lovely stay other than that. Less than a minute from King Street and less than a mile walk straight down to Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's. Beds were comfortable, tvs worked well, and it was just a lovely stay in almost every way. We would absolutely stay again.

Only two of the three floors actually livable and only partially

Pros = Location Cons= Door to enter backyard difficult to open. Knob is loose and door drags on ground. Scaffolding set up right inside entry. Door to home through back door difficult to open as well. Screen door metal knob broken and door sticks. Needed to put shoulder into it to get in and out. Entry lights flickered both on landing and stairs. Bulbs were in proper but still flickered. Seemed to b an electrical issue. Middle floor is more of a showroom than a livable space. Nice antique furniture and the room that can b seen from those looking to see gw townhouse. No privacy. Downstairs is the kitchen and family room which is hard to heat. The home heater does not warm this space and the portable heater did very little. It was freezing in December. Two windows downstairs have no covering so privacy issue. Dryer was just awful. I selected all different setting trying to get clothes dry and that was quite challenging. Should be able to dry three pairs of Jean's within 2 hours but not this dryer. Top floor has large window outside bathroom with no window covering. Privacy issue. Top floor bathroom has cast iron toilet seat and tub. Needless to say it was COLD. Shower had some black grout by faucet control and by feet. I used a qtip to see if stained or dirty. Qtip came back dark showing not properly cleaned. One of the two bedrooms were not cleaned out. Lingerie in closet and underwear in drawer. I would not stay here again. Advice to owner is to provide window coverings for all windows, replace or fix dryer, fix outside door as well as the homes backdoor, fix electrical issues and get a portable heater that actually works. This delightful house was perfect for our stay. The location could not be more convenient-we walked to nearby shops and restaurants ( King Street!), to the farmers market and to the waterfront. Founders Park at the waterfront was great for exercising our dogs. Take the water taxi at the end of Cameron down the Potomac to Georgetown and back for a fun afternoon. The parking spaces behind the house are a HUGE plus. The english basement family room and kitchen offered a private area to relax in. We hope to stay again!

Truly memorable weekend in this historic, yet wonderfully comfortable home. So wonderfully decorated that you feel George Washington is just upstairs. Well stocked kitchen with a keurig for coffee lovers. It was a super hot summer weekend, but the house was well air conditioned. We just did not get to enjoy the adorable back courtyard. The location is amazing. Just a block away from Gadsby’s tavern where many of our founding fathers met for dinners. My family has rented many homes or condos as we love having common spaces to spend time together. This is by far one of the most memorable. Would Love to come back with more family members.

Fantastic stay at GW townhouse!

If you're looking to stay in Old Town with a small group, look no further! This is a great place with so much history in a fantastic location. We had four adults and two children (6 and 8 yrs), and it was just perfect for us. It is just as listed and has everything you need for your stay. It's within walking distance to so many great restaurants and shops. On Saturday, the farmers market is a short walk away and is not to miss. Also to have a couple of parking spots dedicated to the place is a huge plus, as finding parking in Old Town is not easy. The courtyard in back is peaceful and beautiful. The drive to the National Mall is easy from there as well. Would definitely stay here again!

A wonderful historical house to stay.

If you like old colonial homes, look no farther. It's a historical landmark which is on the tourist maps and ghost tours. Three stories of comfortable space dating back in time. If stairs will be difficult, I would reconsider this property. Very elegant, clean, has all the amenities, and super close to stores restaurants, bars, waterfront, and a reasonable walking distance to the closest Metro stop. Round trip Lyft was 22 each way from DCA. Give it a try.

I grew up in the Washington DC area, attended UVA and always loved Old Town for its proximity to the water, its historic character, and the multitude of local places to visit.

Why they chose this property

My wife and I loved the house layout, the walk to everything location, the large courtyard, the parking and the historic significance! We lived at the house for almost 10 years.

What makes this property unique

The house is exceptional in many ways. First, of course, is its connection with George Washington. Second is that it is a very beautiful and comfortable home. Third is its remarkable location that allows you to walk a short distance to so many wonderful spots. Lastly is its large courtyard and parking spaces on the property.
