We are Sabina and David, and we feel incredibly fortunate to call Lough Sillan House home. Since moving here, we have lovingly restored the old stone cottages and created a peaceful place where guests can slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy the beauty of the lake, gardens and spa. We did much of the restoration work ourselves, and every cottage has been carefully designed with comfort, character and a real sense of place in mind.
Why they chose this property
We chose this area because of its extraordinary natural beauty and sense of calm. Lough Sillan House sits on the shores of the lake, surrounded by 9.5 acres of gardens and grounds, yet it is still just over an hour from Dublin and Belfast airports. It offers the rare combination of feeling beautifully tucked away while still being easy to reach.
What makes this property unique
Little Gem is unique in the way it combines intimacy, history and thoughtful design. This beautifully restored adult-only stone cottage has been created as a romantic retreat for two, with every detail carefully considered to make it feel warm, distinctive and full of character. Some of the original stone walls have been left exposed, preserving the building’s historic fabric and giving the interior a strong sense of place.
One of Little Gem’s most special features is its coloured glass. The original openings in the old stone wall were little more than narrow slits, and Sabina sourced 200-year-old coloured glass for them, allowing those rich tones to influence the interior design throughout the cottage. The result is a space that feels both restful and unusual, with changing light adding to its atmosphere across the day.
Like all three cottages at Lough Sillan House, Little Gem also has a traditional half door, a simple historic detail that adds to its charm and connection to the past. Set within a spacious private courtyard and surrounded by mature gardens, it offers a rare sense of calm and privacy, while still giving guests access to the wider beauty of the estate.
The lakeside spa experience makes the stay even more memorable. Hot tub and sauna sessions overlooking the water offer a chance to slow down properly, while the covered outdoor kitchen adds another layer to the experience, creating a relaxed setting for unhurried meals and quiet evenings.
What guests often remember most is the atmosphere. Little Gem feels peaceful, welcoming and quietly special, making it ideal for couples celebrating something important or simply taking time away together in a beautiful natural setting.
