About this property
Historic Pioneer Cabin in the Heart of Canyon Country
In 2015 we embarked to renovate this pioneer home, built approximately 1890 and 7 miles from its current location, into a cozy space with modern-day amenities while retaining its authentic appeal. It took us a year and a half to build a foundation, plumb and wire it, sand and scrub, build cabinetry from barn wood, oil and paint, build furniture, and locate period pieces that were suitable for the feel of the cabin. There is a claw foot tub with a shower handle and a large, private outdoor shower with hot and cold water.
The cabin is surrounded by gardens. Stunning views of the nearby mountains are seen from within the cabin and from the front and back porches. While relaxing on the porch it is common to see tractors slowly roll down Center Street to the neighboring fields to the south. The sights and sounds of chickens, horses, cows, sheep and the multitude of bird and insect species fill your senses. The night skies are one of the darkest skies in the U.S. A multitude of hiking trails for all levels of experience are only minutes from the cabin. Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, 5 miles west of the cabin, offers opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, picnicking and hiking.
As our guests, you have access to the use of the cabin, relaxing in the gardens, and harvesting fruit or veggies for your meals when available. If you need the use of a washer or dryer, please contact us. We are willing to share our personal appliances.

This is the 2nd time we stayed at the Old Bailey Place. Lisa and Bob were so innovative to turn this rustic cabin into such a quaint retreat for all their guests. We would love to own such a place for ourselves. The cabin is close to all the scenic drives along the canyons and it is beautifully done up with everything a person could want. So lovely.
We seek out unique places to stay and this fit the bill exactly. Perfect base for exploring the area. Excellent host who brought us his fresh baked bread every day.
Bob and Lisa really provided an incredible experience at the Old Bailey Cabin. Lovingly restored and very inviting, the Cabin made a great home base for us while we explored Grand Staircase-Escalante and beyond. The most pleasant surprise was Lil Miss, one of the resident semi-feral cats who was especially sweet and friendly with us during our visit. Can't wait to go back!

Thank you, Tim, for your very sweet message. Yes, Lil Miss is a special little feral, and I know she was very taken with you both. Please return when the opportunity arrises. We are very glad you had a memorable and happy stay. We thoroughly enjoyed hosting you! Lisa and Bob
The cabin has everything you need for a perfect stay in Escalante, and it is the most charmingly appointed lodging imaginable. Bob and Lisa were so generous with special advice for our hiking preferences, and the fresh baked bread every day was incredible! Our four days were an experience to treasure.

perfect gateaway in Escalante
Cosy and adorable house, immaculate, comfortable mattresse and pillows, nice layout. The owners are caring, very friendly and helpful. We loved the location: close to many restaurants and a grocery store yet on a quite block with very little traffic. We truly enjoyed our stay.

Very thoughtful and enthusiastic guests. We enjoyed meeting them. They left the cabin clean and tidy and gave us thoughtful, helpful hints on how to improve the accommodations which we are adopting. We hope that Natalya and David return!
My spouse and I spent a week here. It was so peaceful and enjoyable. The hosts left us a gift basket and were attentive. The location and property could not have been better though and would definitely return again someday.
What a perfect location for anyone looking to enjoy the beautiful back country in Utah! Bob and Lisa spruced this place up with all the amenities one might need, and provided plenty of ways to relax and learn more about the area. This cabin was perfect for each of my day excursions to Devils Garden & the slot canyons to the south, Calf Creek Falls to the north, and Bryce Canyon our west. Couldn't have found a better, more peaceful spot to call home for a few days in an unfamiliar landscape to this Midwesterner.
A great place to stay for trips to hiking in the area.
Good place for one person but tight for 2. Didn't use the tub but enjoyed the outdoor shower. Walk to town easy. Felt very safe for single women. Would recommend for someone someone wanting to stay in town. Watching the birds is wonderful.
Perfectly appointed romantic cabin in great location for hiking.
Beautifully decorated in period pieces but very comfortable. Outdoor shower was great did not get to use the claw pedestal tub but it looked lovely in the bedroom. Wonderful front porch with good shade to take in the evening air. Great hiking in the area. Fresh bread daily from host. Very responsive to our needs. Would certainly come back.
The best word to describe The Old Bailey Place is “magical!” We spent two nights in this historic, beautifully decorated cabin. It was SO cozy! We loved the materials telling about the history of the place. The freshly baked bread and the basket of goodies provided were so thoughtful. The cabin is surrounded by sunflowers and lavender. We enjoyed watching birds and hummingbirds on the feeders. We will definitely go back.
My fiance and I stayed here for a few days. The cabin was so charming. My fiance gave video tours to several of her friends because she loved it so much. We were both impressed by how thoughtful the owners are. We spent one day just lounging in the back yard reading and chatting, and another day out hiking and exploring. We found the location perfect for both. We will absolutely be back.
This cozy cottage is beyond cute! The hosts, Lisa & Bob were warm gracious hosts who brought over fresh baked bread in the morning. The perfect jumping off point to explore the beauty of Escalante Staircase area and further
Small, cozy, and very cool cabin. Bob is an added treat. Knowledgeable, personable and well read. Nice to meet a fellow Sierra Clubber who knew Ed Abbey.
We stayed at the Baily Cabin for a week - great location easy drive to National and State Parks. Loved sitting on the front porch late afternoons reading and watching the activity of all the hummingbirds. Kitchen set up is great - cooked 4 meals while staying there. Also went to restaurants in the area: Great mexican food at Georgies, Great pizza at Escalante outfitters, super farm to table at Hellbone Grill in Boulder. So many hikes to do in the area. Lisa and Bob were great hosts!
The Old Bailey Place is the perfect getaway for a couple looking for a quaint environment and solitude. The bed was super comfy and the linens were top notch. It was exactly as described.
If we decide to travel to this area, we would definitely stay again.
Thanks to Bob and Lisa for giving us our space, much appreciated.
A friend and I stayed over a long weekend and were absolutely charmed by it. The one thing I had reservations about was the outdoor shower but that proved to be functional and a very interesting experience. Thank you!
Charming, historic cabin in the heart of Grand Staircase Escalante
The Old Bailey Place is a true find. This historic home has been lovingly restored with charming detail and thoughtful amenities. You will love the outdoor spaces including the unique outdoor shower which is wonderfully refreshing after a day of hiking. Bob and Lisa were great hosts. Bob’s muffins and bread were delicious and an extra special touch.

About the host

My husband, Bob, and I moved to Escalante in 2015 after retiring from our jobs in Southern California. We both love the outdoors and in particular Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. It took Bob a year and a half to renovate the cabin, and he did so with thoughtful consideration to the history of this place and attention to detail. I created the interior embellishments.
We both love a simple and quiet life. We raise puppies for Canine Companions for Independence to become service dogs for others. Not all puppies graduate with honors to become service animals. We have a waggy-tailed, "change of career" dog named Cabernet. She will not bother you unless you want a friendly kiss or a stick toss.
