Great location. Hotel decoration and fittings etc are very tired and in deed of refurbishing. If travelling during warm weather, strongly recommend getting a room with air conditioning.

A a slightly tired hotel that could really do with sprucing up. The information that tells you that your room will not be made up unless you ask for it using an app is frankly poor. Firstly because some people won't have a mobile phone that can operate the app secondly a lot of people, like myself, don't want yet another app on their phone. Thirdly the little tablet with the information on it talks about housekeeping. Which many people, myself included, did not realize meant actually cleaning the room why not just have a sign you can put on the hook at the door saying, "Please do up my room," or "Please don't"? This is also the first hotel I've ever been to where I've had to pay for parking. Whilst I understand it's in the centre of the city I stayed here some years ago and we didn't have to pay. And there was no information when I made the booking to tell me that I had to pay. If it wasn't for its perfect location I would never consider staying here again.

The public areas of the hotel were unkempt. There was no room service - not even basic - between the two nights we stayed. There mattress gave me back ache and the continental breakfast was, frankly, a joke. No replenishment of fruit, meats and no large mugs for the coffee machine. There seemed to be only one member of staff who was checking people in, taking payments and looking after the service. Unfortunately, he wasn’t using any initiative to deal with the situation. It was the worst breakfast experience ever which cost £21. As if all this wasn’t enough, when we arrived we were told we had paid over £600 for two nights. When we checked our booking, this simply wasn’t the case. As we were leaving another person was in a dispute over extra costs. Finally, the cost of parking £30 in hotel owned spaces is excessive by any standards. Having lived in Winchester to 15 years - left in 2007 - the Wessex was always renowned for quality. Alas it has become tired and with very poor service. Given its prime location, it needs to change.

We will not stay here again because there is no air conditioner in the whole building. The room was super hot. They did provide an electric fan but it was too weak for the room. The temperature was over 38 degrees the day we were there. However the location was perfect though. It’s just across from the cathedral and the tourist street. The bus station and the green shuttle bus stop to the coach is just one block away. We took the train from Southampton to Winchester. It’s only 15 minutes away. The railway station is uphill but walking down to the hotel is manageable and is not too far away. There’s buses come down from the station or you can get a taxi. The hotel is close to McDonald, M&S, grocery store and many bars and restaurants. Winchester is a nice town not too big and enough things to see in a day. The cathedral is definitely a highlight of the trip. We felt safe there even walking around at night.

On arrival it took sometime for reception to find my booking that had already been paid for as they immediately asked for payment. This was fairly quickly resolved. The first room allocated, after 3 attempts and maintenance involved I eventually got into the room. It had no air conditioning and the fan was not working! I was then allocated another room on second floor. Again two attempts to get in to no avail. Reception staff had to come up with their own key and maintenance had to reprogram the door (as per first room). The lady receptionist, katlin I believe always very helpful though. The shower screen in room 210 unfortunately leaks and leaves water outside the bath area after each shower!Breakfast was terrible unfortunately. We left after having an instant coffee (no real coffee!!). One pain au chocolate left and hot foot was all dried up! Not worth 13.50!! It was 9:15am but nevertheless someone should have kept an eye on it!The entire building looked tired and in need of some maintenance, TLC inside and outside of building. The issues with the room keys was not ideal especially when I need to visit a relative in hospital who was very poorlyThe positivesGreat location, parking available, walking distance for all amenities, shops and historical sites. Taxi phone on site.

Ideal location to local amenities and places to see in Winchester. Unfortunately, the first room allocated, the key didn’t work after the second attempt… finally maintenance let me in but did not have air conditioning and the fan wasn’t working. I was allocated another room on the second floor. That room key did not work neither! But the room did have air conditioning and was pleasant enough. The shower screen does not keep the water in as found a puddle of water on the floor everytime I had a shower. I am sorry to say but breakfast was terrible. We did arrive at 9:45am but there was no fresh coffee, one pain au chocolates left and cooked breakfast was lined with a film of crust (probably had been standing there without attention for a while) and not eatable! We had an instant coffee and left. Definitely not worth £13.50. Some positives, The lady at reception (Katlin I think) was lovely and very helpful as well as maintenance who could not help enough, they were so accommodating and welcoming. Was disappointed that the bar was closed but it was around 11:30pm! The hotel in general does appear to be tired and need some TLC! Including the outdoors. I like the idea of direct contact with Taxi firm. My visit was due family emergency so smooth checking was of the essence as had to go to the hospital!! The issues with the keys did put a damper on the stay and smooth arrival unfortunately.
