TIPS
We recommend spending a day visiting the beautiful towns around the lake. Como is the main urban center in the area, but the smaller towns are gems with stunning lakeside villas.
To move around and walk along Lake Como, especially in the small villages, comfortable shoes are a must.
There are many public drinking fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also drinkable. Feel free to bring your refillable water bottle!
If you're looking for a relatively easy hike in the area and still want to enjoy mountain views, the Greenway del Lago di Como is a scenic and easy-to-follow path that connects several lakeside towns from Colonno to Griante, with minimal elevation gain. A bus will take you to the starting point in Colonno.
Look for traditional restaurants to try local foods, especially fish-based dishes from Lake Como.
In Italy, many stores (especially smaller ones) and services close during midday, so plan your shopping accordingly.
Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are forbidden in many areas and can be dangerous. For those who wish to get into the water, there are some options. In Como, there is an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but swimming in the lake is generally not recommended and often prohibited. There are some beaches in other lakeside towns. A small, charming beach can be found in Careno, though it may be crowded on weekends. Locals and visitors also enjoy going to Nesso, where brave swimmers can dive from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall.
The Lido di Bellagio and the pebbled beach in San Giovanni welcome those who want to explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the intersection of the two lake branches.
Lake Como is situated in a mountainous region. Although the surrounding Pre-Alps may not seem high, the weather is still influenced by the nearby mountains and temperatures can change quickly. Be especially mindful of weather conditions when hiking, and always bring warm, waterproof clothing!
