TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to visiting the charming towns around the lake. Como is the main urban center of the area, but the lakeside towns are real gems, featuring stunning villas. To get around and walk along Lake Como, especially in the small towns, comfortable shoes are essential. There are many public drinking fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also potable. Bring your reusable water bottle! If you’re looking for a relatively easy hike with great mountain views, the Greenway del Lago di Como is a scenic and gentle path that connects lakeside villages from Colonno to Griante, with few uphill sections. A bus can take you to the starting point in Colonno. You can also hike from Como to Brunate or vice versa. There are two trails and the walk takes about an hour. Look for traditional restaurants where you can taste local dishes, such as the fish-based specialties of Lake Como. In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services close for a few hours at midday, so plan your shopping accordingly. Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. However, for those who wish to dive into the water, there are some options. In Como, there’s an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo. Swimming in the lake itself is generally not recommended and often prohibited. There are beaches in other lakeside towns. A charming little beach awaits you in Careno — please note it can get crowded on weekends. Locals and visitors also love to go to Nesso, where brave swimmers can dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall. The Lido of Bellagio and the pebbled beach of San Giovanni await those who want to explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the junction of the lake’s two branches. Lake Como lies in a mountainous region. The surrounding Prealps may not seem very high, but the weather is still influenced by the nearby mountains, and temperatures can change quickly. Be mindful of weather conditions during hikes and always bring warm and waterproof clothing!
EXPERIENCES There are so many wonderful things to do around Lake Como! We can suggest and help you arrange the following:
Private boat tours Kayaking/SUP on the lake Seaplane flights over the lake Yoga and meditation classes Wine tastings Cooking classes Hiking and foraging Mountain biking tours Mountain treks Guided tours of Milan
