About this property
Country Cottage Near Historic Berwick and Beaches
Briar Cottage is a beautifully renovated 150-year-old home with boutique style and original character. Sleeping up to four, it’s perfect for couples or families. Enjoy a cosy wood-burner, roll-top bath, and secure dog-friendly courtyard with covered patio for year-round al fresco dining. Nestled in Paxton Village, just 5 miles from Berwick and the coast, and steps from the renowned Cross Inn pub and restaurant. Nestled in a quiet square in the heart of Paxton village, Briar Cottage is a cosy retreat where period charm meets modern comfort. Lovingly renovated, it’s designed with families and four-legged guests in mind — a place to unwind, explore, and feel instantly at home. Step into the boot room, the perfect spot to kick off muddy boots or dry paws after countryside walks. It also accommodates the washer/dryer should you need it. A stylish shower room with a large, powerful shower sits just off the entry — ideal for freshening up or whisking a muddy pup straight in! The heart of the home is the beautifully crafted shaker kitchen with Silestone worktops, quality appliances (including a Nespresso coffee machine), and everything you need to prepare your favourite meals. Snuggle up in front of the log burner in the living room where you’ll also find Sky TV, Netflix, and a selection of books, games and DVDs for cosy nights in. Just off of this space you’ll find the dining nook which is the perfect spot to gather for a meal or a boardgame. French doors in the dining area open to a covered patio — a sheltered space for year round al fresco dining — leading down to a fully enclosed courtyard that’s safe for dogs. Upstairs, you’ll find a comfortable master bedroom with king-size bed and ensuite roll-top bath, and a peaceful twin room with blackout blinds for perfect sleep. You’ll have the entire cottage to call home during your stay, so please settle in and enjoy! We live around two hours away but if anything urgent arises please don't hesitate to contact us via the AirBnb app or our contact details provided in the guest information folder. Our email address is also in there for less urgent enquiries or local recommendations. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if needed. The village itself has the 'destination' pub / restaurant The Cross Inn, a well-equipped play park for children, and is only a five minute walk to Paxton House. Paxton House is a beautiful example of a Georgian stately home. If you take a tour, you’ll find the staff are very knowledgeable and interesting. The Stables Tea Room serves delicious soups, scones and cakes with a dog menu for the pups (seated outside). You can wander around the beautiful grounds or walk a bit further to the Union Chain Bridge and stand in Scotland and England at the same time! There is an adventure playground for children and you can also take boat trips up the River Tweed. There are often seasonal events and fayres on at Paxton House so it is worthwhile checking online to see what else is on offer before your stay! As well as parking for one guest vehicle directly outside the cottage, there is plenty of street parking, all within walking distance. There are many walking routes you can take directly from the cottage or if you're keen, the Cheviots are a short drive away. The historic market town of Berwick Upon Tweed has lots to offer for nature, culture, food and shopping enthusiasts. Buses to Berwick and surrounding areas run Monday - Friday. A bus timetable can be found in the cottage's guest information folder alongside a list of recommended local taxi firms. It takes only around 10 minutes to reach Berwick by car and you'll find ample car parking. Once in Berwick it typically takes around 45 minutes by train to get northbound to Edinburgh or southbound to Newcastle. There are many towns and villages easily accessible by car from the cottage if you want to explore the greater Northumberland and Scottish Borders areas. We particularly recommend Eyemouth, St Abbs, Alnwick and Bamburgh. We want your stay at Briar Cottage to feel easy and relaxed. Parking is available right outside in The Square and is indicated with sign on the fence. The cottage is traditional in style, so while it’s been fully renovated, the stairs are a little steeper than in a modern home — something to bear in mind for little ones or anyone with mobility issues. A starter supply of logs, tea, coffee and a few essentials will be waiting for you when you arrive. Please note that there are no shops in the village although there is a huge variety of supermarkets, independent shops and restaurants in Berwick just 10 minutes drive away. We highly recommend visiting the Cross Inn pub / restaurant which is stumbling distance from the cottage. It is hugely popular amongst both locals and tourists though, so booking is advisable! Dog Guests: We happily welcome up to two well-behaved dogs — the courtyard is fully enclosed and there’s plenty of local walks from the door as well as beaches a short drive away. We ask that dogs are kept downstairs, that you protect the sofas with dog blankets, and that you clean up after them so the next guests can enjoy the space too. Please advise when booking if dogs will be staying so that we can provide dog towels and blankets. There is no additional fee for bringing your pup. HOUSE RULES: No smoking or vaping inside the property. No dogs upstairs. No unregistered guests. No parties or events. Quiet hours 10pm - 8am please
