About this property

Peaceful self-contained rural steading with private garden & beautiful views

The Wheelhouse at Westside Steading

A fully self-contained, private holiday cottage in a newly refurbished nineteenth-century granite steading in rural Aberdeenshire.

With its own entrance, enclosed garden and off-road parking, The Wheelhouse offers peaceful, comfortable accommodation for a relaxing countryside break. Attached to our home but completely separate, you will have exclusive use of the space throughout your stay.

Dog friendly and ideally located for exploring, it is popular with hillwalkers, cyclists and wildlife enthusiasts, and within easy reach of beaches, castles, distilleries, Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms.

The Space

Nestled into the hillside and surrounded by fields, The Wheelhouse sleeps up to 4 guests and one well-behaved dog, with beautiful views and a calm rural setting.

The open-plan living space includes a newly fitted kitchen with dishwasher and a farmhouse dining table. We provide tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk, sugar and basic cooking essentials (oil, salt and pepper). Double doors open onto the private garden, perfect for al fresco dining.

The cosy sitting area has two comfortable sofas, a smart TV and a selection of books and games. Free guest WiFi is available (speed can vary due to our rural location).

Underfloor heating runs throughout, and Pawsafe non-slip flooring helps keep both you and your dog comfortable after a day outdoors.

A separate utility area includes a washer-dryer, iron and ironing board, plus a Mud Daddy for muddy paws, boots or bikes. Laundry and dishwasher supplies are provided.

The bathroom features a freestanding bath, separate shower, heated towel rail, toiletries and fluffy white towels.

There are two bedrooms, each with a king-size bed, cosy bedding, hairdryer and lovely views.

Outside & Access

Guests have exclusive use of:

A private entrance
An enclosed garden area with seating for outdoor dining or a sunset drink
A dedicated gravel parking space for one car (additional parking available on request)

The garden is newly created and still being planted, but already offers a peaceful space to relax and enjoy the surroundings. You will often see sheep or cattle grazing nearby, along with local wildlife including hares, deer, foxes, buzzards and kites.

If steps from the parking area are a concern, please let us know — we can offer an alternative parking option.

Good to Know

Suitable for adults and older children (10+)
Maximum occupancy: 4 guests
A car is recommended due to our rural location
One responsibly managed dog is welcome

The garden is enclosed but not guaranteed to be escape-proof. Livestock are present in neighbouring fields, so dogs must be supervised and prevented from chasing or barking at animals. Dogs likely to jump fencing should be kept on lead.

The property is supplied by a private water source, which is filtered and sterilised on site.

A Ring doorbell is in place at the front door for security.

What a beautiful cottage and outlook! Helen had created an incredibly comfortable and beautifully detailed space. We enjoyed local walks and just gazing out the windows, be prepared with as good book (or one from the cottage library) and enjoy getting outside when the weather welcomes or embrace the weather as it is.

The property is tucked away in rural Aberdeenshire and situated on the side of a hill. The converted steading is beautiful and decorated very tastefully. All you need for an escape from the busy world. We brought food for our two night stay and had everything in the kitchen we needed to make our meals. This morning I stood on the doorstep, breathing in the cool morning air and listening to the birds singing. It was hard to leave. Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful, when we approached them about something. But tactfully gave us our privacy the rest of the time.

About the host

We’re Helen and Neil, and we live on site at Westside Steading, where The Wheelhouse is set up as a private, self-contained cottage for guests.

We manage everything ourselves, so you’ll always be dealing directly with us. We aim to keep things straightforward, well organised, and thoughtfully set up so you can relax and feel at home from the moment you arrive.

We’re nearby if you need anything, but otherwise we’ll leave you to enjoy the space in peace.

Why they chose this property

We’re based here because we love the balance it offers — proper countryside quiet, open views, and lovely walks, but still within easy reach of villages, beaches, mountains and the wider Aberdeenshire area.

It’s a place that naturally encourages you to slow down a bit, which is exactly what we wanted to offer through The Wheelhouse.

What makes this property unique

The Wheelhouse is designed to feel like a comfortable, self-contained cottage, with its own entrance, private garden, and open views across the surrounding farmland.

It works particularly well for couples or a small family with an older child (around 10+), and we’re happy to welcome well-behaved dogs, with the enclosed garden and self-closing gates giving extra peace of mind.

Access includes a set of outdoor steps from the parking area, so may not be suitable for very young children or those with limited mobility.

Comfort and relaxation are at the heart of what we do here — a place to properly switch off, coorie in, and enjoy a bit of space and quiet.
