About Owner / Property Manager
Wilderness Wind is owned and operated by Chicago Voyagers, a nonprofit that provides outdoor active experiences to urban youth that would not otherwise have access to such opportunities. Youth participate in biking, hiking, rock climbing, camping, and river and lake canoe paddling trips. Included are trips into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness that include wilderness canoeing, portaging, outdoor meal preparation, camping, wayfinding, and appreciation of the unique habitats of the BWCAW. Kids develop self confidence and are specifically taught leadership and teamwork skills. Your stay at our cabin helps support these programs! Thanks!

Why Owner / Property Manager chose Ely
Staying at our rustic cabins offers guests a chance to experience the same flora and fauna of the Boundary Waters that the youth participants experience but with the comfort of comfortable beds, kitchens, and nearby hot showers and toilets in the bath house. Guests can paddle canoes on the lake and enjoy a campfire, hear the call of loons, enjoy sunsets over the water, and in doing so, feel a little closer to our natural world.
What makes this Cabin unique
One of the greatest things about Wilderness Wind is the peace and quiet of the local environment. People come to Wilderness Wind to get away from the noise of the city and to be close to nature. From a recently published book by our neighbor to the north of us, David Okerlund: “What makes our refuge so special is its solitude. At night the sky is crystal clear, and the only sounds you may hear is the crackle of your fire, an occasional forlorn call from a loon to its mate, and an even more entrancing high pitched wail of a grey wolf. Each sound we consider to be a priceless experience”. We agree completely with David and others who have worked hard to build a quiet community here on Lake Armstrong. We would like everyone who visits us to experience this slice of solitude too. Therefore, we ask that you do your part to keep Wilderness Wind quiet. Don’t bring your jetski or your bass boat with 300 hp engine. A small engine on your fishing boat is of course fine. Kids should make noise (or they wouldn’t be kids!) so we’re not trying to stifle fun but we do want everyone to respect the quiet that emerges at the end of every day for all to enjoy.

Made to feel like family
Wilderness Wind welcomed us warmly from the moment we arrived. Jay and Dan, the on-property hosts during our stay, are so very gracious - sincerely interested in knowing us, made us comfortable, ensured we had all we needed for a truly memorable stay. Our privacy was respected when we wanted that; we were also readily welcomed as friends by all guests and the hosts. The community bonfire is an amazing event with easy laughter where each person's daily adventures were celebrated. Access to the boats, canoes, kayaks was a cinch with everything we needed - whether to paddle or to catch our limit of fish each time we went on the water. The cabin was the perfect rustic hide-away from our normal lifestyle: clean, woodsy, warm blankets for cold nights, the kitchen is well stocked. We will be back next season with our entire family.
Cozy and lovely cabin!
Lovely cabin and area. I really enjoyed watching the sunset over the lane and hearing the loons from bed. Unfortunately I wasn't able to spend any of the rest of our booked time there as we had a family emergency and had to quickly leave and catch a flight so we disappeared after that. But we really enjoyed the short time he had there!
Awesome secluded cabin right on the lake!!!
Had a wonderful time!!! Pretty secluded cabin right on the lake! Property is well kept with very many options of things to do there with no extra cost! Will definitely rent from them again.
Excellent rustic cabin with lots of charm
Cabin and all the common areas were very clean. Plenty of firewood for fires, hot water was awesome in the shower, and use of kayaks was wonderful. Randy is always available and very helpful with anything.
Perfect cabin in northern MN.
Cute property, only 4 cabins and a yurt. They have canoes & kayaks for guests use. Cabins are low tech, with a shower house/latrines a short walk away. Perfect for my weekend away from the cities. Highly recommend!
Great time at the cabin!
The pictures on here don't do it justice! We stayed in a nice little two-three person cabin. There is a pullout bed for an extra person, and a heater underneath the bed. The kitchen was pretty well stocked with pots, pans, cups, and silverware. Also there was a coffee maker and a toaster. The lake is beautiful clear water, and not very weedy. It's great to swim in. Right when we got there the property manager greeted us with a big smile and showed us to our cabin. If you're looking for solitude and privacy this is a great place. The bathrooms were kept clean and did not smell. The showers were clean and felt great. Every night there was a community campfire if you're looking for a little socialization and everyone we met at the campsite were very friendly!
