Little more information about our property:
On the northeastern side of the settlement, in the historic neighbourhood of the Kalydonianoi family, stands an impressive architectural complex consisting of two adjoining tower houses and an olive trees.
The two-part building was constructed in 1894 by the brothers I. and N. Kalydonis, as recorded on an engraved stone plaque on its southern façade. These were among the final buildings erected within the traditional settlement of Vathia.
By 1894, the long period of local conflict and armed family disputes had largely come to an end. For this reason, the two adjoining tower houses were designed as more spacious and comfortable residences rather than primarily defensive structures.
The main body of each tower covers approximately 60 square metres and features large window openings, fireplaces in the principal rooms, private courtyards, and auxiliary buildings. For their time, they were considered luxurious residences, constructed specifically to provide comfortable family accommodation.
From 1940 until 1972, the western tower house served as the primary school of Vathia. Like all the historic towers of the settlement, it is officially recognised as a protected historic monument. It is also an important landmark in the educational and social history of the village.
The former school has now been fully renovated, with all of its traditional architectural elements carefully preserved. Since 2019, it has operated as an elegant two-storey holiday residence under the name Vathia Tower 1894.

Further information about Vathia:
Vathia is one of Mani’s most distinctive and widely photographed traditional settlements. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the sea, this fortified village is an exceptional example of Maniot architecture and an important part of Greece’s cultural heritage.
Its stone towers and tower houses stand close together along narrow cobbled pathways, forming a defensive settlement once designed to withstand attack. Often called the “Parthenon of Maniot architecture,” Vathia is known for its impressive two, three, and four storey towers and panoramic views.
The settlement reached its height in the 19th century, when around 300 residents lived there and worked in agriculture, livestock farming, hunting and olive cultivation. During the 20th century, however, migration and urbanisation led to its decline, and by 1980 only eleven residents remained.
Restoration work by the Greek National Tourism Organisation helped preserve many of Vathia’s historic tower houses and introduced the village to a wider audience as a cultural and travel destination.
Today, Vathia resembles an open-air museum, with historic family neighbourhoods, stone residences, cisterns, threshing floors, and winding paths surrounded by the rugged vegetation and seasonal wildflowers of Mani.
