My family and i loved this place. The property is beautiful, the hosts are friendly, and it was located in close driving distance to some great places.
We enjoyed the quiet peaceful atmosphere that this cabin had to offer. Even though the Medina water level is low, we were able find enough water to float on tubes and enjoy the natural surroundings. This place had everything we needed to cookout and a spacious porch to hang out in the morning. Carol and Lyn were great hostesses! We will definitely be back.
We enjoyed the peacefulness of the property and the friendliness of other visitors on site.

Fun & Relaxing
We had a great stay at Boulderdash! The cabin was clean & cozy and had everything we needed. Josh & Shelley were great hosts. We will definitely reserve the cabin again for future family trips.
We had such a great time at the Boulderdash cabin. The property is gorgeous and has great river access. The cabin was clean and well stocked with anything you could possibly need to stay. The owners and camp host were wonderful and very helpful. We hope to be back again!
We very much enjoyed our stay. The views were great and there is plenty of room for kids to explore. The river was low, but that didn't dampen the fun we had. The location is a little secluded, but still close to State parks and the town of Bandera. All in all, if you want a peaceful spot, this is the place.
We went for a long family weekend, 4 adults and 2 kids. Perfect setting: clen, convenient, gorgeous view over the Medina River. A detail telling everything about the attention to comfort for the guests: a lot of towels are available! We found our local vacation spot, count on us to come back!
Our Eclipse experience was made immaculate by the setting of this gorgeous property & river access…. It was the perfect place for family & close friends to share experiences together and make memories. Lots of beds for everyone, a good kitchen for family meals, and the best spot for relaxing adventures…! Highly recommend!!!
My husband and I truly enjoyed our trip to the cabin. We really enjoyed our walk along the river and sat on the front porch and listened to the water flowing. The cabin was spotless and had way more room then what we were expecting. Also the bed was very comfortable.
The cabin was very cozy, clean and has everything u need, the river just a few steps away and the host were awesome. My kids loved every minute of it. We’ll definitely come back.
Property was perfect, and had everything we needed. Enjoyed feeding all the critters. Deer, squirrels, turkeys, Porcupine, birds etc. house was extremely comfortable! Hated to leave. Back home and missing the porch already.
A rough-looking drive into the property, not in the owner's control, was offset by the setting when we arrived at the cabin. Quiet, secluded, well designed for relaxing on the porch watching deer and the creek view. Owners are delightful and set up a Christmas Day potluck for the campers and locals that was very nice. Strangers enjoying each other's company. Will return in a different season.
Location is amazing- lovely to sit on the porch in the morning looking out at the river. We loved kayaking and skimming stones on the river. Lovely that our dog could go loose. The firepit and loungers by the river at night was a highlight. And smores! The cabin was cozy, comfortable and very well equipped . We really felt like we escaped to nature for a few days.
What a special place to relax and enjoy the Medina! The cabin was clean, very well equipped and so comfortable! The covered deck facing the river provided a lovely place to watch the birds, the river, and families enjoying this fantastic setting.
My dog enjoyed it as much as I did!
Best of all, the owners and the camp host were amazing.., welcoming and attentive. I would recommend Boulderdash cabin! I know I will be back as soon as I can!!
We had a fabulous time here! The house was cozy and clean and right next to the water. Our family loved building a rock dam and skipping rocks on the colder days and floating on the river in tubes on the warmer days. We went into San Antonio one day. Our dog stayed at the cabin. The owner took Penny out for a long walk for a very reasonable fee. It was great to know that Penny was taken care of while we were visiting the sites in San Antonio. Thank you!

Weekend get away
Cabin was well stocked with everything u needed for cooking. Beds were comfy, kayaks were an added bonus. Check in and out was perfect and easy. And the water level was high and nice temperature.
Only slight issue was having to work around all the people fishing in the morning but all and all it was a good weekend. I will be planning a trip back in the future. Thank you for opening up your place to guests. Its a perfect getaway from the city.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Boulderdash! The cabin was perfect for our family and we all had a wonderful time. The cabin was clean and well stocked with everything we needed, and our kids loved the DVD collection. We had a great time hiking up and down the riverbed and loved seeing all of the deer and other wildlife. Andrea and her family were wonderful hosts and invited our girls up to feed the deer, which they absolutely loved. The owners were easy to reach when we had an issue with the door code, and resolved our issue smoothly so we could get right in and enjoy our stay. We hope to be back again!
This was our second time staying at boulder dash. This time the water was lower which allowed for more exploring the riverbed. Owners were very up front about what the changes in the river were. We were well prepared for fun in the low river instead of kayaking and swimming that we did last time. The kids loved building mini dams and wading in the deeper parts. The front porch was amazing during a brief rainstorm. Beds are clean and comfortable, kitchen very well stocked. Very pet friendly with easy stairs for our older girl. We will be back. Our only regret is that we waited so long between visits.

So quaint!
The cabin on the Medina River was just perfect for our stay in the area. We truly enjoyed staying there. It was too cold for swimming of course, but that didn't stop the kids from taking out the kayaks and going for a spin on the river. I personally enjoyed the fire pit and roasting marshmallows in 39ºF weather after a day of hiking at Lost Maples; simply perfect!
The cabin is lovely and quaint, has all the amenities needed--the only drawback is the small water heater and the lack of a few essentials like olive oil or vinegar. I would definitely recommend staying there if you want to disconnect from the world, reconnect with nature and recharge your batteries!
And the hosts were very responsive and attentive to our needs. Thank you!
We booked last minute and owners were great at communication and gave us personalized tips for our family. Cabin was beautiful and clean. Facilities were beautiful and very very well stocked. Third bedroom has a separate door with its own entrance. So if your kid wanted to use the bathroom in the night they would have to go outside to get in. Not an issue for us, but nice to know. Everything we forgot, we found already in the cabin. They had smore stuff, lighter fluid, bbq sauce, you name it. We made friends with some of the other residents. It isn’t super private, but we weren’t looking for that. It was great to have other kids to play with. Very dog friendly. They even had dog beds and doggy biscuits.
Water was very slow moving and my 6 year old had no problem navigating the one man kayak. The rocks are gorgeous and wildlife kept us all entertained. We will definitely be back.

Not what I was expecting
If you are visiting this property because of the river, you might want to reconsider. I was looking for a property on the water within a two-hour drive of Austin. I reviewed the photos and description and this one looked promising. The banner photo with the deep, running water was especially appealing. When I inquired, I was told the river was low. The river looked so large in the photo that it seemed that “low” would mean it was still a decent size and that the water level would be between 6 and 12 inches. (Looking back, I should have requested a photo or actual measurements.) Imagine my surprise when we arrived and I could barely see water. Directly in front of the cabin the water might have been two inches deep. The width of the water in front of the cabin was 10 to 15 feet. However, most of what was in front of the cabin was white river rock. “Low” was an inadequate description for what I witnessed. “A trickle” or “non-existent” would be more accurate. (FYI: There is a deeper pool of water approximately 75 yards upstream. You could do a little paddling in that area but you won’t get far because you soon run out of water again.) So, as I previously mentioned, do not book the property for the paddling and water play.
Now, if you are just looking for a place to get away from it all, then this property would be an excellent choice. The house is clean and nicely furnished. The kitchen is well-stocked with utensils, pots and pans. The house has a large porch which would be quite comfortable during the cooler months of the year. The caretaker politely checked in a couple of times during our stay but mostly left us alone. The deer on the other hand, were checking in quite often. It was not unusual to see them at all times of the day.
Know before you go: The house is located down a white gravel road. Your vehicle will be covered in a white dust. The driveway is very steep with a big curve. I’m glad we arrived during the daylight hours. It would have been a little scary making that drive the first time after dark.

About the host
Hosted by Carol-anne & Lyn
Hello, I’m Carol-anne, my husband Lyn and I spent several years searching for a Hill Country hideout. After not being able to find anything that would meet our needs we had all but given up on the idea. So we decided we should just buy ourselves an RV and go wherever the wind blew us. In 2016 we did just that! We bought ourselves “The Land Yacht” as I have come to call our Heartland Cyclone. We spent 2016 and 2017 touring the country. In February 2017 we decided to attend the “Cowboy Mardi Gras” in Bandera, TX and found a great spot to camp on Lake Medina. My dad joined us on that trip and I think we all kind of fell in love with the place! Lyn and I (always dreaming) decided to look and see what sort of real estate there was around the lake. We have always argued about lake vs. river. Lyn likes the lake and I like the river. Anyway, after some searching online we decided to go up in person one day and just “look”. Well.......long story short. The first place we looked at was Boulderdash, it met all our needs. Boulderdash came complete with 2 acres on the river at the mouth of Lake Medina. It had a cabin already on it that was built in 2009 and 5 RV hookups. PERFECT! We listed the cabin as a vacation rental and started to refurbish the RV hookups and sites. We needed to be able to accommodate ourselves and maybe someone to manage the place. In 2018 the lot next to ours became available, so after much discussion, what started out as a temporary rental became a full blown campground, as well as the site of our forever home which we have spent 2023 building! It continues to exceeded our expectations and has become a place full of fun memories.
Why they chose this property
This was where we wanted to retire. The views here are amazing, and although the river levels vary widely, the Medina river with its boulders and limestone bottom is always beautiful to look at! We also love all the wildlife here!
What makes this property unique
Our property is unique because its off the beaten path, Its topography is very unique with the huge limestone boulders and cliffs that offer lovely views. We are also SMALL, we have an option for every sort of nature lover from tent sites to this fully stocked cabin. Please like us on Facebook! We will be posting pics, improvements, plans and interacting with our guests there! You can also visit our website Boulderdash.net where you can book our campsites, see reviews, photos and check lake levels.
