Palazzuolo sul Senio is a small medieval village located in the "Upper Mugello" on the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, half way between Florence and Bologna.
Surrounded by greenery ,it enjoys a mountain climate and is the ideal half for trekking, nord walking , Mtb , fishing. hunting , nature lovers and for all sports and outdoor activities ( tennis, swimming pool, minigolf , football etc.)
It is also the strategic base to visit by car ( suggested) or by train (fom Marradi) , the main cities and touristic attractions in the area.
Palazzuolo sul Senio has been recently inserted among the most beautiful italian villages.
It is an ideal holiday also to appreciate the gastronomy ( handmade filled pasta with the unforgettable potato' s tortello ! ) and the wines of both Regions.
The village has all the ncessary services on offer i.e. a bank, a post office, a pharmacy , the local tabacchi and other shops ( such as a few groceries , a butcher , a bachery and two mini market), a few bars , a pizzeria and even a pub.
Usually the shops open at 7.30 AM and close around lunch time; they subsequently reopen around 4 PM and stay open till around 7 PM.
On Tuesdays and Saturdays one can go to the small market to buy fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables.
Especially during the summer and the autumn the village organizes many events and feasts from the Tortello 's party in July to that of the Chestnuts in October , the dainty fruit of our territory known all over the world , which has gained from the European Community the GPI prize ( protected geographical indication )
The Vicar's Tower has a long history going back to the Middle Ages.
At that time it belonged to the noble and powerful Ubaldini family and acted both as military defense and as a manor house collected to the nearby Palazzo dei Capitani.
The term Vicar has any religious significance.
The Vicar was the strongman in charge of the Florentine Republic to administer justice and collect taxes, remaining in power for maximun six months.
The tower dominates with its original stone walls the current Strigelli Place, onec the arms square of the ancinet " Castrum Palazoli" ,already mentioned in 1381.
Palazzuolo was one of the strongholds of various powerful families such as the Eschini, the Pagani and the Ubaldini but in 1373 ,after a long siege and battles, the estate came under the influence of Florence and
therefore of the Medici family.
Near the Vicar's Tower one can see the Palazzo dei Capitani .
On its outside walls one can still see various coats of arms belonging to the Captains who succeeded each other in the assignement.
This buiding currently houses the Tourist Office and two little trasures that we highly recommend to visit:
The Mountain People's Museum and the Archeological Museum of the Upper Mugello.

Superb stay in the Vicars Tower
Very friendly and concerning host Almost everywhere antique furniture in many cozy split level rooms. When the windows are open there is always a nice cool breeze. So we didn’t miss an airco. 2 Nice terraces with a super BBQ. Beds are very good Kitchen is small but very efficient The road to Palazzuolo is truly an experience and fun to drive. So it no punishment to drive and visit Florence Bologna and Ravenna. We went every evening to drink an appertivo at the nearby Mavi Cafe. The owners were very helpful and very friendly and they serve an delicious apperitivo Overall The vicars tower is a great place to spend your holidays. Best regards Nico de Bakker

Amazing place to stay and recover from a years long work!
We had the most wonderful holiday in this medieval tower. After one of the most scenic drives i had in italy so far you reach pallazuolo sul senio. People are nice and honest and love to show there local products! Small tip! (Buy the bbq chicken at the lcal butcher!!!) Te owner kindly showed us the house and there were some nice treats already there for us. The house consists of two floors (floor 2 and 3) and has 2 terraces and two garden. We had a wonderful time here with our family, having great italian dinners. The tower is a wonderful historical building. You can feel the medieval style everywhere. With 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and plenty of space it is perfect for families. Bologna and Florence are reachable within 90 minutes. The roads are mountainous so driving takes some experience. Elisa, we want to thank you for your kindness and beautiful holidays! Kind regards, Sven, Kim, Mila Susanne, Mathieu
