Quirky / interesting house with exceptional view, unfortunately spoiled by unfriendly host
The house was a very good fit for our party of 4 adults and 6 adolescents, + 1 visitor for 3 days. Although it is a 10 minute drive to the village/waterfall/river (our main attraction) the house is spacious and contains all the basic amenities. Its outstanding feature is the spectacular view from the terrace, which, although a shared facility, is a real bonus. The amenities weren’t quite as stated. There were no towels despite the information on the website that these were provided and (much to the disappointment of the teenagers) the hot tub was restricted to adults and the WIFI only worked in one small area. Unfortunately, whilst we had an enjoyable holiday, the lack of friendliness from our host (who lives on site) tarnished our overall experience. Her manner was curt and business-like and she appeared to be reluctant to engage with us. This may have been because she did not speak English so our communication was confined to one adult in our party who spoke a little French and two bilingual adolescents, who were self-conscious about translating. However, she seemed to be cross when we had to ask for her help to re-start the boiler and her attitude towards us when we left was suspicious and confrontational. Despite ensuring that the house was as we had found it she treated us like untrustworthy children, checking every room and counting the cutlery in our presence (finding one spoon missing, which we could not account for). She was angry that one of the teenagers had mistaken one of her pillows for her own (we swapped it immediately) and she wrongly accused us of taking another pillow. Her attitude meant that we became flustered about final details such as her request for tax and I needed to be reminded to replace one of the keys. Her response may have been because we over-ran the departure time by 15 minutes in order to have a last cup of coffee. Alternatively perhaps this was her first rental experience or she has had a bad experience in the past. However we have never encountered this level of hostility in a host before and were astonished and upset by it.
